How have they gone back on their word? He signed a 5 year contract with no release clause, there's just a presumption here that he would be able to move on to another club when he decided. They're perfectly entitled to keep the player, who will help them win things, or to absolute rinse United for leaving it so late in the window when they've already lost a sizeable chunk of their first team.
You ever worked? Ever had someone dump work on you just before clocking off? Ever have someone break a promise to you?

Sure, there's no contractual agreement but it would piss one off easily.

This stoic philosophy of "he has a contract" is bizarre considering the emotions of humans and the short shelf life of footballers.

yet we reluctantly bowed to his wishes once we receive a huge world record fee. The 2 situations aren't that different.

The only difference is Ajax are refusing mega money because....?! they just think we will give them more and more.

Oh I agree they’re really pushing their luck. They’ll never see this much for him again. No doubt that wanker of a manager they’ve got is behind this after publicly going all in on him staying. I know it’s completely irrational but I’ve developed a serious dislike for that guy.

Ajax, like many clubs, makes most of it's best deal by selling academy products and sub-€10m players for 20-45m. In today's market you don't need to have extreme talents to extract such fees from the market.

When they get their €90-100m I'm sure the financial director will be crying all the way to the bank.

Do you mean the market in general? Because I've heard that prediction so many times before. Even at the start of Covid, and the market barely noticed.

Ajax in the mud

Stop comparing him to the young Ronaldo situation, different times where the media, internet, and transfer are totally different. He said 9 months ago that he wanted to try a new challenge and the club didn't hear him. If anything we should decrease our bid because of all this new public information.

Are fans still going to blame United? It seems like they gave Ajax plenty of time and money to do a deal.

I can see which of you would make horrendous bosses..

To some people your word is everything. It was a two year project according to Antony and he told them in February he would now like to leave.

United honoured their word to Ronaldo and let him go to Madrid.
That was his idea, that doesn't mean he had an agreement with Ajax

All clubs have kept wantaway players and it has worked out.
Name them. We were forced to sell Ronaldo (when he was the best player in the world) when he pulled that stunt in the media and he only agreed for 1 more season out of respect for Fergie.

But it's entirely their decision they're entitled to take. Like PSG turning down 160m or similar for Mbappe in the final year of his contract. If they feel they would rather keep Antony than pocket 90m, and if they didn't promise him to accept a specific offer of course, how are they in the wrong?
Nobody is saying they are not entitled to it, it's just stupid. And the problem here is that Ajax lied about wanting to sell Antony in the first place. So in short - they jerked both us and Antony around for months. PSG never pretended they wanted to sell Mbappe, they were adamant since the beginning he was not for sale.

This is exactly how I feel about it. United fans were queuing up to commend Ajax for being a classy club during past windows but they're throwing their toys out of the pram right now.

Ajax have sold a shit ton of key players this summer and clearly don't need the money. They're not desperate and, as usual, we are. If you're going to aim your anger at anyone, aim it at the suits who've left it this late ( yet again) to conclude important business.
Pretty much how I see it.

Of course I'd hate it if one of our players did this, but I fecking love the dedication and desperation the fella has to play for us.

Can't see how this doesn't happen, he's doing everything humanly possible to make it clear. There's no going back now.

There is no merit to the "He's not worth half that much argument." If he wasn't, United wouldn't be making the record bid.

He is worth exactly the amount a club is willing to pay for him. And United - with such a horrible start to the season, a jaded attacker-deficit squad, the late hour of the bid, the anti-Glazer protest pressure and the responsibility of backing the new manager - think he is worth the bid made and the final bid to be made.

On the flipside, the club would never agree to a 2 year deal with a player of his potential either. If that were the case then, he’d be moving on a free this summer. A 4-5 year deal gives the player the mid term security and at the same time also secured the club’s ROI given that the player performs well. I’m assuming they had an agreement in place while signing a 5 year deal which catered to both their plans.
Yeah I know where you're coming from, it's how it usually works with talents.
But the agreement is seemingly not written down and both parties understand it differently. Hence the discussions right now. They should've set a release clause after year 2 instead of hoping they'd 'find a way'.

This deal has to be done, looking from the board's perspective, as failing to bring in two top targets would look very weak in support of the new manager.

They have a five year agreement. That's got to be honoured or dissolved by both parties.

Suddenly contracts mean nothing?

This must be burning Ajax. I can tell from the way the manager was ignorantly talking about champions league that they were backed into a corner. Antony does not care that Ajax play UCL and United EL, this season. He wants to achieve his dream. Ajax are simply a stop on the journey to greatness. If I’m an aspiring footballer in the favelas of Brazil reading these Romano tweets one thing is for sure, if I move to Ajax I want a get out clause.

They aren’t obliged. However, the reason players like Martinez and Antony go to Ajax is for a route into Europe - develop in a semi-decent league, win trophies, play CL and then move on after showcasing themselves. That’s the dream that’s sold. Ajax get great young talent, win things and make hundreds of millions. You start forcing players who have now outgrown that league to stay hindering their development and turning down record fees then if I’m an agent I’m thinking twice before sending anyone to Ajax.

There’s a limit though. They sell players every year, fulfilling this dream for them in the process. They’ve sold like 6, don’t need money and the season has already started. Ajax are probably thinking you had your chance, try again next year - now knuckle down, we’ve got a game tomorrow.

With the FDJ situation, we’re too far gone to fail on both of the managers primary targets; we will pay the extra to get this over the line, I’m certain of that much.

Hope you’re right, mate.

Worried we’ll end up with nowt.

After Antony going public, there surely is no way back for him there now. They will look even more bigger idiots than they have done so far if they still refuse to let him go.

Agreed.

Ajax don't come out of this looking bad at all, they are negotiating from a position of strength and IF the transfer happens it will be on their terms (Not Antony's or Uniteds).

Bad to whom? Ajax's model is developing their players (brought in from abroad, or locally), and then selling them on at massive profit. For a young player brought in from abroad especially, can you trust that you'll 'do your time' and then be allowed to leave for the right price?

This deal has to be done, looking from the board's perspective, as failing to bring in two top targets would look very weak in support of the new manager.
The irony in this deal is, even when we get Antony is shows a level of incompetence that is beyond comprehension. This surely pushes the narrative that we all want. Glazers out. They can't do right for doing wrong.

United should walk away.

We are the only club in for him. If he was on the transfer list for £50 mil, I’m not certain any club but us would be interested.

Walk away and let Alex deal with the unhappy player.

If we don’t, we will continue to get gauged for every transfer.

He’s a “luxury “ player anyway. We have Sancho on the right. Would be better off going for a left sided forward at this point.

This Mofo is really getting on my nerves. I hope they drop out of the CL and we paste them.

Name them. We were forced to sell Ronaldo (when he was the best player in the world) when he pulled that stunt in the media and he only agreed for 1 more season out of respect for Fergie.

Rooney wanted out and Kane wanted out.

Are you under the impression that no transfer request was ever denied?

Well no I'm not

I like that the lad wants to come but he's being well paid by a club that gave him his break in Europe

As Jose would say 'respect'
Respect for what? They're clearly not respecting him or his wishes.

There's an unwritten agreement that Ajax lets their players go to bigger clubs for reasonable fees. It has always been the case. Who have they held onto?

Antony has seen players come and go and he's being priced out of a €90m+ move and Ajax violating the "unwritten gentleman's agreement".

Footballers are humans too, they have breaking points. They have short careers too.

Imagine being able to earn 4-5x more at another company, seeing your company let talent go when they wished to leave only for your company to turn down a mega offer for you and prevent you from that immense opportunity.

Ajax are well within their rights to refuse offers, Antony is well within his rights to call them out and a bunch of cnuts.
