The 90m figure was being floated in May, wasn't it? The idea we could have got him for peanuts at the start of the window is based on very little and feels more like people wanting to get angry at the club.
Why didn’t we bid it in May then? They could have rejected or accepted it - we could have moved on or signed him and actually have the players we needed weeks ago.

Then take a lower amount next season instead, they're the alternatives and still have the same problem.

I find it hard to believe the much touted amazing recruitment Ajax do in the market generally there isn't an Antony replacement lined up for down the line anyway. Ziyech is only 29, Tadic played well into his 30's at Ajax and was largely average at Southampton.

how do they have the same problem? It means not affecting this season, and having a whole summer to recruit a successor if needed, who would similarly be less expensive than if we tried signing him at this stage of the window.

Its lose lose for Murtough

- Pull out and you just look like a mug, for a player who was always on Ten Hag's shortlist only to fail to sign. Added with Timber/FdJ/Darwins from the early Telegraph briefs
- Buy and you look a tit for overpaying given he could have joined us 1 month ago for cheaper, but we dicked around with a no-goer in FdJ.

I'm seriously starting to dislike Ajax. Trying to rinse us on every deal... feck off.

You're the team trying to sign our manager, centreback(s), winger, and transfer-targets (Brobbey) all at once.

Something like that, they’ve been hard headed on this all summer. I think if Antony kicked up the fuss earlier and/or we took our focus away from FDJ we probably could’ve got it resolved a month or so earlier.

Pretty sure we had 2 official bids (€60m and €80m) rejected already.

Yes but:
- 90m for an elite Ballon d'Or player is not as risky, because he already has shown he can play constantly at that level.
-90m for a prospect labelled the next big thing (Mbappe/Haaland/Felix) is risky, but you know that he'll be worth it or even more without injuries.
-90 for a prospect that 'may work out' under the right manager and circumstances is a huge risk.

I would put Antony at that 3rd tier which is why I think we should walk away now.
You think Mbappe would cost 90 million in this market?

Not sure why Felix isn't a big risk either. Seems overrated to me.

I am getting sick of the incessant moaning of certain pathetic individuals.

-Darwin Nunez goes to Pool for 100 mill and you moan: Why didn‘t we get him?
-Antony may cost 90+ million and you moan: It‘s too much, we are always overpaying.

-Frenkie de Jong wanted to stay at Barça and you moan: he doesn‘t want to come here we don‘t want him.
-Antony wants to come here and you moan:
we don‘t want him.

-Frenkie de Jong is a priority target and you moan: he is not a true dm.
-Casemiro, the best dm in the world comes here and you moan: he is not a playmaker.

Should I go on? You Miserable fecking cnuts!?

Totally agree with you here ,we moan about the glaziers not spending and when they do we fecking moan abo
This post looks really familiar. Could have sworn I read it yesterday. Or maybe I'm having a Twilight Zone moment.

BREAKING: Ajax accept €25 million bid from Bayern for Antony.

We all know this would be the case for any club not named Manchester United.

If he turns out be an excellent player people will stop caring about the fee.

Let’s be honest we are at desperation stakes now.
The risk of getting nobody is bigger than the risk of paying €100m for him in my opinion.
At least he clearly wants to come here and will give it 100%. Time will tell by how much we overpaid but we are not negotiating from a position of any strength at all.
Bend over and lube up.
And to think we could have got both Martinez and Antony early in the window. I think we had a different budget in June and a bigger one in August

Why didn’t we bid it in May then? They could have rejected or accepted it - we could have moved on or signed him and actually have the players we needed weeks ago.
If we wanted it him it should have been done at the same time as Martinez at the latest. A soon as we handed them a fortune for him it was obvious to anyone that they wouldn't want any more sales.

Feels like a matter of stubborn pride more than anything at this point. They want to prove a point rather than doing the financially diligent thing.

Nothing else can explain the reluctance to sell in the face of absurd amounts of money and the player actively boycotting them to force a move.

They could easily buy the best talent in Holland or abroad to replace him with the money they'll be bringing in and even without him they're still the best team in the league as is so any sporting reason rings a bit hollow.

He could do but the odds of him having a storming world cup in a team with Neymar and other big names are slim. He needs to leave Holland to prove he's world class, the league isn't up to a standard where he'll ever be considered that level no matter how well he does, so therefore always a risk.
Ronaldinho came to real world prominence in a team which had bigger names than him as its figureheads. Brazil are favourites and the starting RW, has a huge opportunity to make his mark. Ronaldinho was still in France at the time of the World Cup that catapulted him to superstardom. It’s a well trodden path, nothing new at all. Ajax aren’t flustered and I think it’s pretty obvious why.

Wow some of you sound like such brats “how dare they not take our money”. Their player, they don’t want to sell, upto us to make an offer they’re ok with or walk away from the deal. Stop the entitled BS.

Over the course of 2.5 fecking months. There is absolutely no justification outside of pure incompetence for us go into this season needing 2 forwards, 2 midfielders and a RB - and here we are going into the 4th game with only one of them - Casemiro - at the club.

That price converted into pounds is about £76million. For reference, de Ligt and de Jong went for the same amount. I'm not actually sure if this is enough and we need to go higher...

De Jong went to Barca for €75M + €11M

Ajax also got €75M + €10.5M for De Ligt when he went to Juve

United is offering €90M for Antony, and it is not confirmed if that includes add-ons but it's still potentially more than what they received for De Jong or De Ligt

Stupidity all around. I've accepted we won't get him this summer. Get a loan this year and get him next year for 40m less.

What happens if Antony puts up a transfer request? Will Ajax then compelled to sell him? He wll lose loyalty bonuses but we can offer sign on bonus to compensate.

No way is he worth twice in value to that of Gabriel Jesus.
Give Garnacho a chance, he will surprise a few.
Sancho can cover the right wing for a season.
Get someone in January or next season.

Genuine question, why? Absolutely nothing suggests he is even at Sancho’s level. We’re paying far to much for this kid who hasn’t even hit Memphis numbers in this league.

Your problem is you're exclusively looking at G/A numbers.

The intensity and tempo in Antony's playing style on a whole other level to Sancho's (and Memphis' for that matter) in the Bundesliga, which is one reason I never bought the Sancho hype (he's undoubtedly extremely talented, and I still think he can be a success, but I was never convinced he could immediately translate his performances in Germany to the PL).
