Why are people unhappy? Atleast the manager is getting his first choice attacker.
There are some proper miserable sods on here. This clubs history is littered with exciting, skillful players, but nah, feck that, we should spend £30m on some mediocre winger instead because playing the online accountant is so much more fun

Yeah, Antony is not doing that in any league ever.

And comparing any young player like Ronaldo is always a losing proposition. Its a bit like bringing up a Hitler reference in a political debate. The moment you do it, you lose immediately.

It’s a lot of money but there’s been zero rumours of anyone else apart from Gakpo, and most seem to think he’s ronaldo’s CF replacement. Sounds like it’s Antony or nobody for the wing, and I quite like the idea of a left footed player cutting in from the right. We should have got him weeks ago though, we’ve overpaid but getting the player is all that matters.

How do you guys repeatedly manage to come up with insane logic to justify the clubs moronic decision making?

From Ole's cultural reset to this
What is ’insane’ and/or illogical in that post?

And also, it’s one thing to bemoan the situation, but what are you proposing as an alternative?

I hope he's better than Nani was (who everyone on here rates really highly). For this outlay we need a player who becomes a top PL player and stays there for 5+ years.

Please United, walk away ffs. Absurd money.
Im for this now. I wasnt before but other clubs are paying silly money. At least Antony comes with a guaruntee of faith in Ten Hags system, a left footer and very high ceiling. 22 years old will have some resale value too.

Just get it done.

why does everyone think weeks ago signing players was so much easier? Do you think every club selling and buying wants to leave it until the last few days? Assuming the selling club is in a stronger bargaining position on the last day? History has shown lots of clubs are left with money they don't have time to spend in such instances and suffer for a season as a result. Antony is clearly pushing for a move and that can take weeks to have any impact on the selling club also. To drive the message home....they may also be looking and struggling to replace him who knows.

People are missing the point here - it’s not that he’s worth 100m - of course he’s not, nobody thinks that. It's just that Ajax have already sold key players this window and given where we are in the window, they’d struggle to replace him. We, meanwhile, are desperate to sign him. So the price goes up - demand and supply.

We are not in a position of strength with regards to bargaining, we've got a pile of money and a squad that has been awful for years, and everyone knows.

So you'd have to trust ETH, he knows what he can give us.

It's not our money. If ETH wants him, get him. If he flops it'll be another one to add to the list over the past decade. We'll move on as we always do.

without ETH as well if he does. Clubs are all cash rich (many richer than us and much much smaller than us). 100m is a lot of cash but Ajax don't need it. They'd likely refuse that also if the player said he wanted to stay and has no intention of moving away.

I'm really surprised United didn't try and get Dembele when he was a free agent. I see him as a perfect traditional Manchester United winger. Incredible with both feet, pace, his finishing is improving now on top of being an assist machine he has everything to succeed in the PL. His fitness record also improved last season and he's twice the player Antony is imo.
I agree with this

There's an interesting conversation to be had about writing off a season so we can rebuild properly instead of throwing ridiculous amounts of money around and trying to win something this very season.

If we planned this whole FdJ thing a bit better, we wouldn't be in this situation and yet here we are.

One thing to think about is to have the right age profiles in the squad so the squad peaks at the right time. If we have Casemiro, Bruno playing at their peaks now, Ronaldo in a decline and Sancho / Antony peaking in a few years, is that the composition we want to have?

None? Get him next year. Let Ajax have an unhappy player for the season.

But we need him now?

The better we do the more money we make, and the thinking is he'd make us better. Saving 10 million but losing him for a season is a false economy.

I don't like Antony at all. Dives too much anyway so prefer not having a player like that at United.

So if we pay the asking price, some fans will be very unhappy for parting with so much money and if we don’t pay it then some fans think we aren’t backing the managers with the players he wants brought in.

Jeez, can’t keep everyone happy.

Maybe you throw money to rebuild. It's not necessarily either or, and this is the least speculative of transfers as the manager knows exactly what the player brings.

The alleged importance of having worked for ETH that makes it worth overspending on Anthony by about 30m. That's fecking insane. How many goals/assists expecting from him in his first season, if you think it's that important?

My alternative is, just don't sign anyone. feck it, just use this £80m and sign another CM and/or RB. If that doesn't materialise, just wait until next summer.

In a sellers market, you have to be opportunistic and not be set in your ways. It's stupid, because you'll keep on getting rinsed year after year. I'm hoping by next summer or even January there is a more obvious target for the RW position who's much better value for money. Until then play the guy we spent £70m on last summer for the same damn position.
