we paid 89 million 5 years ago for a 24 year old Paul Pogba.
We paid £80M for Slabhead ffs

I'm not bothered about a similar sum for an exciting forward at a positon of glaring need in Antony as other tbqh.

Would rather spending to keep us from going off the rails rather than the club sitting on money during a time of crisis

But to stick to the Neres-Antony comparison, me preferring Neres is similar to preferring Ganso to Neymar in 2010. Ganso might be a more unique (style) player, but I think it’s clear now why Neymar had the better career. Though he had a few lovely games at Sevilla! Sadly the few is very literal.
The summer prior to signing Antony Ajax was eyeing Diego Lainez as the Neres replacement. At the very last moment he chose to go to Real Betis instead.

Dodged a bullet there :D (although it's always hard to say how a player would have developed if they had gone to a different club).

Richarlison was a done deal until he switched to Everton at the last moment and we got Neres instead.

I imagine itll be heavily structured with bonuses and clauses.

No way do we pay a straight fee of that kind.

Ah, the typical full quote for United from the press rather than "initial fee plus bonuses". Classic.

The less said about Woody's transfer strategies, the better.

exactly. If Anthony is who this manager wants then he needs to be signed. He might turn out bad, but he could turn out to be our own version of Salah.

As always we get fleeced, if Barca or Bayern would be in for him he would go for €50M max.

Yep, Barca never get fleeced.

140m for Couts
100m for Dembele
120m Griezman
60m Raphinia

The list could go on

It's crazy isn't it? Who the feck in their right mind thinks a forward with his productivity is worth anywhere close to €100m. It's madness.

Those getting upset at the potential fee… it is probably Anthony or nothing at this stage. Don’t be thinking there is some cheaper option that the club would sign if this deal collapses. The manager wants this player and if so, they need to get him, especially after not being able to get De Jong.

I almost feel like VDS is trying to save us by making the fee ridiculous, but we're not getting the message

This is still crazy to me. We got Sancho for 70 odd million and he was a much higher rated talent. Luis Diaz also went for circa £50m and Kulusevski for 45m too. The latter two were also in January where you have the same on-going season premium.

I just don't understand this at all
Ajax know this HAS to happen. Player clearly wanting to move, United desperate and willing to overpay.

I don't know if 5 milion make that much of a difference but they can push it because they know we will not pull the plug because
A) we've been chasing him whole summer
B) he's Ten Hag guy
C) we really don't have any alternatives (Gakpo is a different player).

Even at the fee we're offering, Ajax would be crazy not to take the money and run. Especially now that they have a ready replacement and still lots of cash.

I think it's equally likely they will accept current deal or we will give them a few millions more, but this will drag to the final day because both parties know this has to be done.

I am just worried that we are going to pay for a striker, above his market value, and still have no midfield to provide the ball to him.

So essentially this is the signing that will finally replace he who must not be named? obviously rather he replaces him is to be seen but he covers that general gap that's been left.

Knowing our luck, we'll sign him for a ridiculous fee. Completely lock ourselves out of the market for a RW for the next 3 years, and in that time a far bigger talent for a much smaller fee turns up

Anytime United are buying the price will be inflated, just minus the 10 million United tax and then see how you feel about the price.

I still don't get whether he is a winger or a striker

If Bayern had’ve been in for him, he’d have been sounded out a year ago and purchased at the first possible opportunity, so they would never find themselves in this penalty tax predicament. No point comparing any other club to Barca but Madrid for their voodoo hold over players.

Antony is the piece we need in our attack to give us a front three who ALL can keep the ball. Currently we only have Martial and Sancho as our only attackers that are good at keeping the ball in the final 3rd. In addition to that, he is a specialist RW that can cut in on his left which is a threat we don’t currently have and will add another dimension to our attack. Especially when this means Sancho will take the right side and be able to cut in as well. Add to that, he already knows the style EtH wants and the effort it requires. Pay whatever we need to pay and get him in because he will transform our attack.

when you consider we got erickson on free. Malacia for 15mil. Then I don’t mind over paying for a position we badly need. It averages out I think it a positive way.

And what about, you know scoring goals? Who's going to do that?

feck it. I don't care anymore. It seems FDJ transfer is dead and Antony will be our last marquee signing.
Ajax should hurry up take the money and find replacement already. Prolonging this transfer isn't good for any party.

They already working on Ziyech. I think once they have that secure, they will accept our offer.

Not gonna lie, haven't hoped a deal fell apart more since Maguire. The inability to find alternatives all window is quite worrying.

What tax would you place on a literal ready-made player for the football the manager wants to play?

Pogba and Antony's standings in football couldn't be further apart.
So is the standing of Nunez and Pogba. Standing isn't always everything. Hopefully our fans get behind this signing for now at least. Let's back the managers ideas and ability.

Can tell a lot of people haven’t watched this guy play and just go to his stats. Watch some of his matches, if you can’t get excited by this kind of player then I feel for you.

Can you come up with an alternative who is of the same profile ? (Quick dribbling left footed right winger) And Antony has worked with ETH so should have an easier time settling in.

I've been in Amsterdam the last couple of days and spoke to one Ajax fan. I said the money quoted was too much, he said this boy is going to be a mega star in the future.

Based on the sample size of one person, I reckon spending this cash makes sense.

He also said VDB was terrible at Ajax so he may be onto something.

I'm as excited as most here, but can't help but feel 30m for Joao Pedro might turn out a better deal for the magpies
