We shouldn't go let us get forced to overpay, even if we trust the manager and this specific player is his number one target. For two reasons: the money we spent today, isn't there to be spent in the future. Even if ETH is totally happy about Anthony, the next manager in maybe two years will be limited in his actions because of the high fee. If you are going to spend so much, then the whole structure should be convinced, that this is a good buy. But apparently, it is only the manager in this case.
I don't know, why people are so fast at being pushed into some sort of "there is no alternative". That is as short-sighted as it gets, there are always option, always alternatives. And we can't laugh at Barca, selling their future while we do the same thing on a smaller scaler. You can't just un-do bad decisions by overpaying. We are trying to undo bad decisions and bad planning with with more bad decisions.
That is nothing against the player, I am sure, he'd help us. But ffs, not at all cost. So many are recalling Ralf's supposedly suggestion, we would need like 10 new players. Nothing really changed, we still have open issues. Overpaying for players only limits your options. We are already doubling the wages of a soon-to-be 31 y/o to fix midfield, now we are contemplating spending north of 80 million for a RW who has only played in Dutch League while we just have spent a huge amount of cash on Sancho, who was also considered to be the solution for the next 5-6 years.
