Not a surprise to me, I watched his goals + assists last season from Eerdevisie and some highlight performances against better teams and his limitations were clear to see in about 30 mins of research.

Like Sancho that's all you really needed to do see their level. It's harder for midfielders and defenders to judge their level (for me anyway), but attackers you can acertain a lot.

Here's what I gathered:

Got a lot of stick from people like @Chief123 and @roonster09 but hey ho.
Buddy, if all you needed to pick a winner was 30 minutes of 'research' on the internet I'm fairly sure professional scouting would be an easier gig to get.

He is useful against parked bus where you need quick passes. But he is not a winger for counter attacks for sure. He kills nearly every counter with bad pass or wrong decision. Not to mention that he is afraid to go all the way. He runs down the line and when full back comes near he just stops.
I feel like you're more so describing Sancho. Sancho is better at playing short passes around the box that lead to chances. Antony's short passing in tight areas is mostly to work the ball around. It's usually always with a defender up behind him, where he then passes to a midfielder like fred, and then the ball goes out wide, to a midfielder next to him, or something like that. It's never with the intent to create or cause the opposition defense a headache. It's very toothless.

But yeah, Anthony's good qualities are his tracking back compared to other attackers, his ability to bring the ball up from the lower middle third to the edge of the final third, and staying wide to receive an outlet pass. That's pretty much all he does. He can occasionally score a goal if the chance falls to him with not much defenders around.

He just offers no threat though. He's just another midfielder whose job is to help with controlling games. For an attacker though, it's really nothing to write home about.

What's going to happen when we actually do control matches better because we have a better midfield than we currently do? He can offer nothing at that point because an attacker's main job should not be what he currently brings.

Don't understand why someone wants to slow the game down when they're ahead of players, when the can't beat them?

You have a headstart, why slow it down? My thought is he is a self centred little attention seeker who wants the limelight
I think it’s a lack of self belief. He’s hoping a run will open up a passing option. Needs to gain confidence and be more driven / proactive in making an impact himself

He slows down every attack, he never tries to go beyond his defender, he rolls the ball with inner side of the boot but in a really slow manner and then passes the ball to a guy behind. Frustrating!

He seems so afraid to take his man on. I do wonder how he’ll overcome this by next season. Usually it doesn’t happen. Still want to give him time but have to admit it is worrying especially given he’s a player ETH likes and we all know managers have their favourites

I can't stand him and I think I'd be tempted to get rid before his value plummets.

That's where the variety would be welcome tbh, a good ball shift and a run, maybe shooting through the player's legs. At least something different

This, Mbappé became far more lethal when he started to mix far post/near post between the legs. It should be even easier considering that any defender would assume Antony is going to go for the far post.

That being said, in only works within a smaller range and most of the shots Antony takes are too far to do that.

That's who I had in mind. It messes up with the defenders and keepers too, if he were to also add shots feints too. He is too robotic in his play

The thing is he isn't to blame for the result today but the most damning thing is he didn't even have a terrible game. All our other players were fecking atrocious today but what we saw today from Antony is a regular performance from this season.

Myself and many others have called him out for looking bang average. I think it's been quite obvious to anyone looking at this objectively but a section on here determined to prove themselves as masters of the game have downplayed this as hating on Antony and that he's been great.

This is a player that fails in both the stats and eye test. I can't remember a player who has been in as many promising situations as him and not once put in a single good ball.

We're in March and we have a winger that hasn't put one good cross in all season. Probably hasn't had a successful dribble directly into the box either. We got fleeced.

The only real mistake I think ETH has made so far. What will really determined how far we go as a team is how quickly he realizes it and looks to change.

Antony's problems is there isn't much there where I can say "he'll develop". You watch someone like Garnacho and it's clear that he's raw as feck but has real qualities that you can look to improve and sharpen. Antony has none of that, he just sort of is what he is. Solid in tight spaces, good left foot, but lacks explosion/strength to consistently beat fullbacks and is so one footed that he can't hardly even take a touch with his weaker foot. Not to mention he's a pretty dreadful creator. Those aren't things that can really be fixed or developed past a certain baseline.

It's alarming. And I'm not even mad at him as it's been clear for a while his deficiencies

The first winger I've ever seen who doesn't try to take man on.

Grandpa Robben needs to come out of retirement to show Antony how's it done. So much like him and unlike him at the same time .
This guy aside from cutting in and scoring once or twice per season, doesn't do anything. His game is at second division level.

This is not a knee-jerk reaction to tonight's game (though it obviously plays a part). But apart from cutting in and curling a shot towards the far post, and tracking back pretty well, it's really hard to see what he does well. It's baffling how hard it is for us to find someone functional for that right wing. Even after spunking the better part of 100 mill, we're not really that much closer

Nothing new came up today that so many have not said already. He will not make it here as an out and out winger. Simply does not have the attributes.

Cannot go past his man and cannot cross. When he does cross it has to be with his left foot because God knows if he has ever kicked a ball in anger with his right. The attributes he does have require him to have the dribbling ability of a Robben to make it at the top level. He will never have that ability.

If Sancho had any balls he would be a permanent fixture in this team. Hopefully Pellistri can step up.

Whilst many things he does annoy me, with most being aforementioned in this thread. What really pisses me off is when he’s rolling the ball under his foot to buy time & not one of our players gives him an option whilst he’s swarmed by 2, sometimes 3, opposing players.

He’s playing a totally different type of game to that of his teammates currently.

Well it was more like two or three hours but you can see a players limitations and strengths in that time.

A completely expected performance from a one trick pony. It was 3 days ago when I said after the Westham match that he was the weak link and poor player for the amount we signed him for and couple of guys jumped on my post about Balance bullshit and told me to enjoy the game etc.

For a winger who does not have pace to beat the player on the outside, never uses right foot, has only one type of shot (curler), where is the variety in his play, a winger is supposed to be the most fast, skillful and best crosser of the team and worryingly enough he has none of these things.

He ruins every counter, because the defender always catches him up and when they do instead of trying to take him on, he turns backward and passes it back, I am tearing my hair out, thinking one on one against any defender is the dream scenario for any winger. Lastly, if he was a good crosser of the ball and had right foot, even these basic failings could have been ignored, but he literally has nothing going for him. For 80M we have signed a dud, ETH has alot to answer for this transfer.

NEWS FLASH!!

It's plummeted.

The lad drives me insane, between him and Bruno they account for the majority of our turnover of balls. I'm sick of the sight of the guy though, how many times have we seen him apologizing to teammates this season?

Just totally sick of him.

He’s among the lowest footballing IQ in this squad. And we do have quite a bit of them.

He'll be important this season, it's stupid to throw away the baby with the bathtub. Maybe he cannot be a starter for an aspiring champion, but you re-evaluate that in the off season. He helps the system, United have been 11 individuals playing randomly for years before Ten Hag got here, and he's an important piece for the system to work.

Even that one trick he has up his sleeve is absolutely useless. I just don't understand how ETH was like "yep, I have coached him a couple of years, he is definitely someone worth splashing half our transfer budget on". I mean I want to believe we are missing something and he is a beast in training just can't replicate it on the pitch for whatever reason but he just looks so devoid of any attacking threat it's ridiculous. Quite literally all he can do is his stupid dummies when nobody is anywhere near him.

He obviously looks far from good enough. Which makes me wonder what Ten Hag sees in him - the man's not a fool. Weird one.

Very frustrating player. He just doesn't seem to know what to do in the final third except for his trusted "cut inside and curve it toward the opposite post with left foot". So many times, he made crosses/passes straight to a Liverpool defender. When you're known as a one-trick pony, the defenders will catch on very quick.

RAWKs nickname for him is becoming more and more true by the week.

An expensive fidget spinner.

Forget the right foot, I am actually more concerned about the left foot seeing him today.

He literally looks like a player who spent 100% of his training time doing cut in and curling shot. Now even his crosses look like a shots (that's probably why we have not seen him crossing the ball ever before).

I feel for him, he should have never been brought here, never mind the fee. Completely out of his depth as a winger.

Its a lot easier to look at him as a hardworking wide midfielder the way SAF used Smith, Fletcher or Hargreaves. He's got about the same attacking quality as they do.

The best thing going for him is that he's from Brazil so it makes people think he's a skillful and tricky attacker. He's as pointless of an offensive player you'll find in the top 6 or big teams across Europe.

The expectations for him are pretty much the same we had for Hargreaves on the right wing and even he could cross better.

Haven't gone around shitting on the entire squad after todays debacle, but I highly doubt Antony is ever going to become a top player despite the outrageous price tag

Wonder if ETH genuinely tells him never to attack his winger. I swear he has bags of pace and tricks to beat defenders.

He's absolutely awful. I was wavering on him after a few games, and now this far in I'm done with him. I would get rid in the summer but know that will never happen. 80m for this man. Ajax have mugged us off.

Firstly we missed him when he was out, now he’s back he’s useless one trick pony. Clearly he hasn’t been great but showed a few glimpses. Very raw player with potential but the complete over exaggeration in this thread and every other thread today is just silly. All of our players should be embarrassed after today however and they’ll be reminded of it for a very long time. It’s how they respond now.

Somehow, looking at it as having spent £80m on the next Alan Smith makes it infinitely worse.

Do we have another United-Memphis/ Liverpool-Mane situation here with United-Antony/ Liverpool-Gakpo?

I sincerely hope not. I have full faith that he will come good though.
