He looked a bit like a young Nani to me yesterday. If he can develop his weak foot and start being more direct, he'll go far.

That's our aspiration now, to buy players and hope they are as good as Nani?

Crumbs.

Nani was good, excellent on his day, but that isn't the standard I would hope we are looking to reach at United. Rashford has done more in ten games than I can recall Nani doing in years, because he is an inspiration for the team. All our top players, think back as far as you like at United, all our top players have been inspirational, made the team, club, fans, team-mates all feel lifted. They set the bar these players.

Nani had his moments, but wasn't this type of player. Similar story for Portugal.

I agree with you that it isn't Antony's fault we paid so much money for him. The point is - he needs to play at the level we need, even if we paid 20 mil for him. It's not about the fee.

Well, i was referring to his performance in the last couple months, so maybe we should talk about the same thing. For a while now, and yesterday specifically he's been below the level we need from him. Yesterday his high moment was when he got a bounce from their goalkeeper, which then WW finished, and Antony didn't even congratulate WW. Which by the way was a very ugly look, but regardless if he is poor, and we know he can be much better, we need him to be much better (how long can we rely on Rashford scoring in every game?), when can we dare to criticize Antony? After 4 months? After a year? It's fine if you want to give him more time, but it's funny that I am being crucified here by some for pointing out the obvious. He was not good yesterday, he wasn't even good enough. I am sorry but it's a fact and it didn't start yesterday, it's been a problem for several months now.
This is an outright lie. Antony went over and he and Wout had an embrace. You're having an absolute mare here.

You are putting words in my mouth. I never said THAT. But if you think we are winning any important trophies (which is EPL or UCL for United) with Antony in his current form on our right wing, then I envy your optimism.

Mate! our last PL title was 11 years ago and CL even longer! Any trophy is important for United and I actually do think we can win the EFL cup with Antony in the team.

that any self-respecting forward would have turned into a 100% goal!

I am putting words in your mouth, didnt realise the quote function allows me to change what you wrote, or someone must have changed what you wrote before it got posted.

If he had score that chance everyone here will be praising him. He had a good match, the talent is there he just needs to work on his weak points right foot and crossings.

Shame about his shot, he struck it very well but just swerved it towards the keeper, he was gutted with himself even after Weghorst scored the follow up. I think he's getting better though.

He did join in the goal celebrations later just to be clear. Obviously he's frustrated at attempts not coming off.

Nani is a player that had several very good seasons for us, in between others where he was more inconsistent (like a lot of flair players). He was a key player of several winning teams, and was instrumental for Portugal on their Euros win. If Antony becomes that type of player, I'd be quite happy actually, despite the price tag (which he had no role in). I think his ceiling is higher (as was Nani's probably), but you're downplaying Nani's achievements.

Nani was painfully average with one very good game in every 6

I wouldn't say he had a good match but he definitely had good moments. Forrest allowed us a bit of a space at times and thats where he's actually quite good.

He's decent at making those central runs and he's obviously good at cutting inside. Personally I think he's playing too wide and it's working against him that's not his skillset. He needs to be far more narrow and he'll suddenly find himself in a lot more attacking positions.

Commentators were talking about him needing to become a Mahrez type but think he's far closer to Salah.

Problem with that is right now,if he goes go narrow, then AWB is out attacking width, which as we know isn't his strong point.

I don't know if you were at the field and saw that, but none of that was shown in the broadcast. What we saw was that WW was congratulated by everyone else, then camera showed Antony standing in place, frustrated, not moving at all, and that was it. So it looked like he never congratulated, and i am not the only one who noticed it.

No need to yell "lies". If you know more - please share. Happy to hear he did congratulate.

He could have scored 3 last night

(first curling shot, 2nd 1v1 with keeper, 3rd the shot for the goal)

He was always involved with attacks, he played the ball well. Sure it wasn't perfect and still some little errors, but nothing major.

People here have just decided he's the new player to use their toxicity on. The fan base REALLY needs to leave that shit behind in the Jose era.

Stop abusing our players, be patient and support them. Abusing them every game and sending them hate on social media won't make him use his right foot more you dweebs.

Antony is a funny guy. At one point he dribbled past his defender, but looked dumbfounded himself so instead of going forward, he stopped and played the ball backwards. So strange.

Good game though!

Nani was world class for a couple seasons and largely good either side. He would instantly be our second, if not first, best attacking player if dropped into this squad. If Antony can get to prime Nani levels, he'll be doing extremely well.

Nani would be one of the best players in the league today. Comfortably.

Some folk have made up their minds on Antony and nothing is going to change that, not even genuinely good performances. They tend to be the kind who like the McTominay’s of the world, in my experience.

He has to improve, that’s obvious. But Ten Hag is bang on the money when he says that we’re a better team for his inclusion. That was obvious months ago.

Without any question. Prime Nani, that is. He got done in by injuries and that was the end of him, but in his early days at OT the man bossed fullbacks.

Agree totally. It's always best to consider players performances in the context of the unit. Dalot has been superb but again he's done that coming into the midfield area rather than offering a wide option.

It's on the break I'd want him higher. Rashford picks the ball up from deep and drives with it but Antony needs the ball when he's already up the pitch. A vertical ball from midfield up into Werghorst and Antony is what I want to see more of but he's nearly always wide.

People are getting arsey over any criticism but it's fairly obvious what he's weak at and it's worth putting into context why he might not yet be performing. He isn't suddenly turning into a two footed winger who crosses and powers past his man for fun so don't know why some are clinging to that hope.

It was 100% shown on the broadcast.

He needs to practice the shooting. If he could master that he would be deadly.

Video below is painful to watch..

He has to improve his right foot, big time he can do a trick etc, get away from the defender, then he's got the space he doesn't use it ! He stops cut back or passes it with his left foot, he cannot get to byline and use his right , that then looses the space he sometimes creates. Ie Garnacho who will do same but goes into the space In front because he will use his weaker foot to cross or pass . This is Antonys issues that he has to improve on. Defenders know he's going to cut back onto his left.

He's only been at the club for several months. Your demands are completely illogical and without context. Anyone with a functioning brain understands a certain standard of performance will be expected from him, and everyone can see he's not there yet, but we also understand it's going to take some time. What's the point of creating an imaginary crossroads as if he'd been here 3 years and it's now or never?

You think he was level to Pellestri yesterday? You remember that Pellestri almost gave them 2 goals right? Antony - 91% pass accuracy, 3 key passes, 2 shots on target.
Attacking wise yeah I kinda do. Pellestri did have two howlers to nearly give goals away but I thought he was good going forward. Tbf I am Suportive of Antony . He was better yesterday than he was against arsenal in my opinion but still needs to produce more I think we will all agree . But as I have said before I think he has the talent and the right coach to succeed

So our standard is now - waiting 3 years until we can criticize anybody? He's been here for more than half a season, it's not like he just arrived. And in case you didn't notice, we don't have any other senior forward on the right side available, so his drop of form is significantly affecting us. Actually, if Rashford were not in an insane form of his life and scoring in every game, we'd be in serious trouble because we are not getting enough goals from Antony, right now. We can agree that the point in football is winning games, and you can't do that without scoring goals, right?

Antony, Sancho and Martial are possession players. Rashford is a counter attacker. We have a disjointed attack.

We can't keep the ball well and often lose control of games.

If we constantly play in the opponents' half Sancho, Antony and Martial will improve. Their close control and technical ability is all without question.

We need a better midfield. I won't judge these players until we can actually keep the feckin ball and control a game.

Yes, we need a striker. But the main issue with United is the midfield. Many posters here think a classy striker will solve our problems - not even close.

In case you haven’t noticed, player development is part of football. Those rhetorical questions in a vacuum mean absolutely nothing without context, and you’re asking them to narrow the focus and cling on to an illogical argument. Rashford has 7 years of PL football under his belt, is 25 and is meeting expectations. No s*** we’d be in worse shape if a player that is meeting expectations was hypothetically underperforming, forcing us to rely on another player to exceed expectations. Your criticism lacks context and is not based in reality.

Was one of the very few people who believed in Dalot so I strongly believe in Antony too. Raw talent is there, plenty of room for improvement obviously but I'm sure he will grow into the role, his last two games were very encouraging.

Against Arsenal he was our most reliable escape from their press and we couldn't control the ball as well as in the first half since he came off. Also, it made Zinchenko flourish last half hour of the game and we saw him moving centrally much more influencing the game. We practically lost any control of events when Antony came off.

Yesterday, he was our most threatening attacker and if he scored one of his chances we would see a much different story in this thread. Social media and pundits are influencing much more opinions than they should, don't listen to that and don't watch a player through his price tag: neither we paid for him, neither he chose his worth - the market is screwed for years now, just keep believing and supporting him.

Excellent post!

He had a good game yesterday, it's becoming quite clear - when he's allowed to go inside, he's dangerous. When he's pushed out wide he's not a threat at all, but maybe that will change once we get more things going on that right side.
I try not to think about the price tag and just hope he improves on some aspects of his game, although I don't put much hope into his right foot since he's not a junior player.

I just watched his highlights against Forest and he seemed more involved than any other games I have seen.
I think the glaring weakness is the inability to go to his right in the same way Valencia could not go to his left and Antonio could not rectify that so it obviously is not easy.
I don't think it is essential that a player has to be equally strong on either side as the two best players I have ever seen were ..are heavily left footed but the ability to go to the weaker side has to be there to keep the defender guessing.
