Amongst the Beeb's rumours:

"Manchester United have Wigan's Antonio Valencia in their sights, but Real Madrid have also been linked with a £15m bid for the winger. (Various)"

That's both Palacios and Valencia being linked to United again.

Palacios is the one I'd want though we also have to recognise what we have coming through. Valencia? No

We've tosic, nani, Ronaldo, park and vaqrious other alternatives.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is trying to find £18million to beat Real Madrid to the signature of Wigan’s Luis Antonio Valencia.

Ferguson wants to stop the Ecuador winger from going to Madrid in the transfer window. Real yesterday offered £9m to take him on loan for 18 months, with the fee to double if he proves a success in Spain.

Now Ferguson is in urgent talks with United’s owners, the Glazer family, about raising cash in a hurry to snatch Valencia. Chairman David Gill is in America to find the funds after Madrid made their move.

Valencia is obviously tempted by the chance to join one of the biggest clubs in the world, but he would love to stay in England and go to United, who were made aware of the offer by Latics yesterday.

Fergie has a ‘first option’ agreement on Valencia with Wigan and boss Steve Bruce broke the stunning news to him, sparking the alarm bells at Old Trafford.

Valencia would be eligible to play in the Champions League this season, and in the long term Fergie sees him as a potential successor to Cristiano Ronaldo.

No quotes so could be bollocks.

Don't think he is worth that much, good enough to become a squad player but not good enough to starting week and week out imo...

Why on earth would we want to stop Real Madrid paying £18 million for a right winger who isnt Cristiano Ronaldo? They'll just have less space in the squad and less money to offer us in the summer and we dont need him in any way, shape or form either.

Since Ronaldo might be leaving us if not next season, then the season after? (and not necessarily to Real Madrid)

Madrid are the only ones other than Man City or Chelsea who would stump up the amount of cash needed to sign Ronaldo. But they are less likely to do that if they already have an £18 million winger. I dont mind us being linked though as it should push his price up higher and higher and suck on Madrid's resources, which arent good at the moment anyway.

I remember watching this lad at the WC and thinking he's going to make it big. Good luck to him, hope one of these 'dream' moves eventuates.

Chelsea could not afford Ronaldo.

I sincerely do not understand how you guys believe that we would need a Winger over a CM.. I personally do not think we require either but if I was told Manchester United are signing a player and was asked to make the final decision of whether it would be a Winger or a CM I would say a Winger every single day of the week!

FFS look at our current options we have 8 players for 2 spots:

Carrick
Scholes
Anderson
Fletcher
Hargreaves
Giggs
Gibson
Possebon

And I do not regard Palacios as a Special talent like how we signed Rooney & Anderson.. So unless a special talent comes along I just cannot see SAF signing another CM..

If we look at our wing options we have 4 players for 2 spots:

Ronaldo
Park
Nani
Tosic

Yea so pls guys lets go on and sign another CM! makes a whole lot of sense to me..

Ljajic will also be available next year..

Yea next January.. But I cannot see him figure much until the 2010-2011 season begins.. Moreover his position is still very uncertain... People claim that he is a player who plays more central that wide.. But I have no clue of where they have got this info (possibly because of the Kaka links or whatever) IMO and out of what I have witnessed he seems to be a right sided attacking player.. Eitherways he is still young and may still be looking for his best position.. He could very easily end up anywhere either playing more centrally or on either of the wings..

only way i can see valencia at utd is if we've lost all hope for nani and we plan to sell him. i like valencia, i'd have him at united. i know it would've cost double the amount but i'd rather have done the valencia/palacios double signing over the tosic/ljajic....i think. mind you i hve no idea how good ljajic will turn out to be so don't bring this post up in 5 years when ljajic win's ballon d'or with us.

well there is the other possibility which is that its true that ronaldo is off in the summer?...

but i hope thats not the case and as you sayi cant see that we need ronaldo, valencia, tosic, park and nani...

unless ronaldo is going to play through the middle?...

hummm not long left till the deadline and i dont think it will happen

I like Valencia, but if it is as a replacement for Ronaldo. Then I'd rather save our money and look for some one better.

Depends who they sell. Wouldnt be a big surprise if they changed a lot this summer if Scolari doesnt win something, he certainly wont be there.

Ronaldo would cost £40m+. Abramovich won't fork out that kind of money.

While I agree he's cutting back spending, I think he'd be very interested if Ronaldo was available for £40m.

considering the arabs just paid 17 or 18 million for a player who they could have brought for 1.3 million if they had waited till the summer I think its safe to say Ronaldo would not go for 40 million... afterall if kaka was worth 108million then lets start the bidding at 140 million... (hopefully that would shut up madrid and chelsea and ronaldo wouldnt go to city)

You're being quite harsh on Valencia. He's every bit as good as he is made to be by the interest from us and Real...

You think?

Kanchelskis is a good few levels above Valencia for me, who'd only be a squad player in this team no doubt.

That's what I was thinking myself.

I think he will leave eventually but I'm in no doubt he'll leave for a fair bit more than £40m.

Chelsea have a terribly imbalanced squad as it is.

selling players to buy just one? shite football decision. you'd expect that of Madrid, but not Chelsea.

Some players dont want to be there. Some are just there for the pay-day.

If Chelsea dont win anything this season, they need to start again - the squad has gone stale.

Even if they do win anything this season, they've got a massive onus on them to start rebuilding with the average age of their squad.

And I'm not sure Abrahmovic will be all that willing to spend anywhere near the amount he spent on his first squad of players.

Bad times ahead for Chelsea I think.

That or maybe he is intending to spend big - hence no funds available now with the summer a much better time to plan things.

Do you really think that's more likely, with the amount of money he's lost recently?
