Nah, they're doubling up on him and not giving him options. Its this that has given Jones the freedom to express himself as he has.

There were instances when he was 1 v 1 mate. He dallied with the ball even when he had the chance. you dont think he was indecisive with the ball and unwilling to take Colback on?

He's been absolutely fine, not at his best, but fine.

Just an average bit of form and even at that he is still a threat and incredibly useful defensively, wouldn't worry about it.

He was a liabilty defensively today in the second half as well. SO atm he brings pretty much nothing. And an average BIT of form? That guy is under par since the start of the fecking season.

Colback is a very good and quick footballer, decided early didn't have the pace to power past him, intelligently released Jones the entire game.

Good decision making, decent performance.

Neither was Ashley Young about 3 games ago, form isn't it and probably could do with a rest.

He's been off form all season. Not buying this playing with an injury thing. He just looks devoid of ideas when he's got the ball. Defenders and even out of position midfielders have comfortable games against him now.

How was he a liability defensively? Simply not true.

Young wasnt used as much as Val though and played himself into form pretty quickly. Val, par the time he was out due to injury, plays pretty much every game and underperforms in every one of them.

Left Jones with 3 fecking players in one occassion in the second half. Scholes and Giggs in the middle in the second half didnt help neither of course but things like that shouldnt happen.

Averagely skilled for a United attacker. All physique for me. I'm not convinced he is a technically better footballer than say, Rio Ferdinand.

He was very ineffective. Is it just me that feels like he's not the same player physically that we've come to know? Doesnt look nearly as fast and not as powerful either. Doesnt seem to be working as hard as he used to either. Perhaps he's carrying an injury?

Oh how I wish the Nani contract issues were sorted, and that Kagawa was fit. We could do with something different out there.

It's a side effect of him always looking for a man - he doesn't cross it unless he picks someone out with his own eyes which means in times when there isn't someone free he'll just not cross it at all. We benefit from it a lot, but it certainly hinders us at other times.

And so the question is why do we have a player who can't go past players with technique or speed playing right winger for us?

He's suffered with some injuries, so we should give him some slack. Totally off the pace today, our Ecuadorian speedster. Pace looked off, tackling was off and crossing was left in his locker. Poor display in a team that tried to set him up on several occasions. I still have faith in him though - as I said, recently back from injury.

Don't remember an instance in which Valencia failed to track back inexplicably, and when he's there he's a fantastic defensive asset. He is never, and can never be described as a defensive liability.

Eh?

If Colback can shut him out this easily, Valencia needs to improve his game big time. Thankfully, this isnt the case. An on form valencia would eat colback for breakfast. He's way off form atm and needs to improve. The bad spell was really affected his confidence. He seems totally unwilling to have a go at the LB.

No real need dressing it up mate, he had a poor game.

He can when its one on one, as he did a couple of times in the second half, due to the fact they were doubling up Jones had loads of space, the intelligent decision time and time again was to use him, which Valencia did.

I don't think he has ever been that great with his final ball or finishing, doesn't help that he is totally right footed. I think its a combination of lack of confidence and the league adjusting to his physical threat, its quite easy to see that when you stop him from running behind he loses 90% of his attacking power. But in saying that he brings the full back into play a lot more because of the way he is defended against.

He most definately needs a rest based on todays performance but given the injuries he might not get one yet.

Thing is he won't have easier games to shine in than today. Everyone looked on fire especially in the first half. Brilliant play from almost everyone and he still failed to benefit from it.

Yep - Valencia should destroy Colback for pace 10/10 times! Poor game - no doubt he will come around though.

Absolutely mate. Nani may very well be a bit overrated on here and at times appear very arrogant, but he always gives 100% and looks to create something.

When Valencia performs like this we may as well have only 10 men out there.

He used to hammer the ball with power towards dangerous areas of the penalty box when he couldn't clearly pick out a single player. He doesn't do that anymore, now he just waits and waits forever

Jesus I'm going round in circles.

1. Sunderland doubled up, Valencia cannot just power past Colback when Sessegnon was also giving cover.

2. He may have been able to do this to a lesser player, Colback is in fact a very good player who will one day be an England squad regular.

3. Valencia therefore made the correct decision in releasing Jones, who as a consequence of 1 had loads of space.

I thought there were some more positive signs from him today but yeah again was a frustrating performance, just too slow to do stuff when the fullback isn't there to help. Can't help but feel Welbeck should be given some time there, he's not a natural wide player but with us playing better he could work well drifting inside. But then you'd expect Valencia will need games to find his form.

We should try Rafael wide right with Jones at fullback.

That combination cannot possibly be any more stagnant than what we have seen down our right hand side with Valencia playing recently.

Forget the instance where he was "doubled up", each time he was 1v1 against Colback he couldn't anything remotely dangerous with the ball.Colback isn't even a proper LB, that's how poor his current form is

There were a lot of times though that Valencia got doubled up because he used the ball do slowly, because he was waiting for Jones to support. Sometimes you need your fullback to make space for you but sometimes you should be able to get on the ball and take on some players yourself. Valencia's inability/unwillingness to drive inside with the ball or currently take his man on the outside is a big part of the problem for me, not the doubling up.

He is also not a defender. Probably never faced a supposed deadly winger in his life.

He could easily be a defender, he's very good there. He plays central midfield as its the position he can have most influence with his ability on the ball.

When does Nani return from his injury? Contract issues or not, he really ought to slot right into the side.
