Antonio Valencia... | Will wear #25 shirt from this point onwards by request

Am I the only one who would really like to see Valencia be our first choice right-back from now on?

I mean shit, he's just got the #7 shirt so it's highly unlikely, or is it? I really think he's suited to be a RB and we would not lose any of his attacking influence because he gets back to defend a lot as it is, with lots of pace and energy, not to mention he's a pretty good defender. Remember when he switched to RB against Chelsea? He was absolutely incredible.

I hope so.

He makes up for his defensive ineptness with physical ability. You can tell he's not a natural right back the way he tracks and reads play.

I think you are the only one.

Let's take the most consistant winger in our team and chuck him out at right back. Yay!

Not sure about Valencia as a permanent right back, but it's useful that he can play there. Can see Fergie playing Valencia there a few times if only to allow some of the other squad members a go on the right, especially if we sign this Lucas.

Obviously not first choice, but against lesser opposition at home, I would kind of love to see him and Nani on the right wing, it'd be ridiculous.

I dont see why it should not be used more often.

More and more now the RB/LB are used as attacking outlets, sure defensive discipline is important but he has plenty of that too.

I personally think the + far outway the - regarding this, and think it would work having nani and valencia on the right.

Half the time rafael is in the opponents half, and if like using the formation we did last night, it leaves alot of space for the fullbacks.

I personally think this formation could work very nicely with him in that position.

I think we could use it more often but I don't want to see it permanently. Firstly, I think Rafael is going to develop into a top class right back anyway for us, while Valencia is our most consistent winger, if not our best one. If Rooney is up top as the main striker next season as some have suggested, then I think he needs Valencia to be out on the wing because he thrives from that direct service. The 2009/2010 season was a perfect example of that.

I can see you're still on your crusade against logic and rationality.

Well if we sign Lucas we will be overloaded in that position potentially, and Valencia would still be an attacking threat given his energy, in a position where we only have one? player naturally suited to it. It was just a discussion point, no need to act like a cnut.

Valencia's got plenty of defensive discipline but it takes far more than that to be a good fullback. He got exposed at fullback every time he played for us and it'd take a long time for him to properly adjust to the mindset and positioning of a fullback. Why bother re-training him to play a completely different role when he's already so good where he is?

We're not going to sign Lucas Moura, and Valencia is not going to be our first choice RB.

Is it too much to hope for that Rafael finally claims the RB-position as his own?

Right, so the official United FB page says

"Happy Birthday Antonio Valencia, 27 today! Send our new number 7 your best wishes here…"

and there's a pic of him wearing the 7 shirt..I know it's from a friendly, but I didn't know it was confirmed he would be our new #7?
Either way, if so, congrats to him :)

Confirmed a while ago. He asked for the shirt.

Rafael has been doing a good job in the Olympics so far. New reports also seem to indicate that Moura is undergoing his medical and will sign for us soon.

Yea, it's really held him back hasn't it?

Bloody hell.

I can see where he's coming from when he says it though. For how good Valencia is he's ridiculously one footed which is a part of why he's quite a one dimensional player.

How is it a big disadvantage to him? He just won player of the year, voted by fans and his fellow players. He's widely seen as the best winger in the league, and is a vital part of our team. His one dimension is plenty.

Oh wow, this means that people on the Utd Facebook page are better fans, and have more of a clue about what's going on than you.

What's the exact opposite of an ITK?

I'm not saying he isn't a brilliant player, but it's that one dimensional side that stops him from being the very best winger in the league in my opinion. He's brilliant but very one footed with his game.

Guardiola called him the best winger in Europe last season so I don't think it's holding him back at all.

what's your opinion of David Beckham, then?

He was brilliant today. His no nonsense defense impressed me. That scoop over the Barcelona player's head to get past him was a fantastic piece of skill. MOTM for me alongside DDG and Scholes.

He was excellent against Vålerenga and terrific today. Being a fantastic footballer and an immensely likable person is an extremely unusual combination. He pulls it off with ease.

I just loved the way he waited with the ball, for the Barca player to attack him, then just scooped the ball over him with ease.

Heh, it's just such a contrast to Nani, he really is a no nonsense "I'll use my pace to beat you, feck the tricks", it's great to have two great, very different wingers at our disposal, I just hope we can for once keep both of them fit at the same time.

Loved the following part as well. Val ran through him as though he wasnt there. He's such a beast

Love Valencia but don't like him playing at full back unless its a lower end of the table side we're home to that we're looking to destroy. A few of the Barca attacks last night i had no idea where he was, he was that far out of position. He also seems quite weak in the air and often caught ball watching from crosses coming in. Attacking wise he was fine.

Yeah, he was outstanding going forwards last night but made some basic defensive errors. He's not a full-back and it shows.

On a side not, I thought Evra was fantastic defensively. Barca didn't get a sniff down our left flank.

I think the first time he ever played right back for us was away at Stamford Bridge, after Rafael got injured early in the second half and Nani came on. They were very good in tandem. As an aside, that match really doesn't get enough love, we won at Stamford Bridge for feck's sake, and they were in great form too.
