Antonio Valencia faces five months out.

So was I, at first. Then the more I thought about it the more I realised he wasn't very good at defending. His performance at OT wasn't the greatest.
Yeah, not to mention it was clear Rojo was obviously nervous/agitated about playing back in Russia that game. Passed the halfway line to support Martial about once. Fernandes had a lot of free space with little to do in the first game.

5 months for a foot injury? That doesn't sound correct at all? That's nearly as long as Shaw with his leg!

At the moment as far as I can see the press are just quoting the report in The Sun, nothing yet from United or Valencia.

He did have surgery on his left leg in the summer, removing some of the metal work that was in there from his broken leg I think. I guess it's possible that there were some extra complications related to that. At an rate I suspect we won't hear more until after the international break now - unless the Ecuador manager says something.

Damn that's a shame. I thought Valencia did well in the games he's played this season.

One or two, i think we have too many.

Go on...

Valencia isn't even one, he's a rb (not a very good one, admittedly, but a right back all the same). He'll never ever play for us as a winger again.

So that give us Young and Blind. Can't think of anyone else that I'd classify as a 'utility player'

Never thought I would miss Tony V, but with Darmian playing like he is.. this is a huge loss. The positive is that it might force us to buy a decent right back in January.

Highlights the absolutely scandalous decision not to sub him off before, or at half time in the derby. Any man and his dog could see that he was clearly in pain after taking a knock, he proceeded to hobble on until half time.
Valencia himself as a professional, the medical team and Van Gaal all failed Utd at a crucial time & even more surprisingly, he came out the second half! How they didn't see him struggling is outrageous, especially given LVG's absolute addiction to a full-back substitution.
In a 0-0 game, with a lack of attacking chances and already basically playing with 10 men (Wayne Rooney, I'm looking at you) to overlook a considerable injury & play on is the stuff of Sunday league nightmares & highlights LVG's stubbornness and Valencia's lack of intelligence. He's one of the club's consummate professionals, never in the news, athletic to the last - I'll reserve my judgement on his ability for another thread - but this debacle reeks of unprofessionalism from top to bottom.

at least it means Darmian will get a decent run now. the more experience he gets the better seeing he's our long term option.

We'll have shitload of games coming up, then you've got December fixtures, we will have to rotate but we'll have nobody to rotate with.

It's only matter of time before Jones is injured or 'in the red zone' again, Young will be occupying left if needed but we've got nobody bar Darmian for the right side. I'd say we're 1 or 2 injuries from being fecked.

Fellaini would be another. Not sure what you mean exactly by a "utility player" but we've got many players who've played in a multitude of positions like Jones, Rojo, Herrera, Lingard, and Pereira. And although they're starters, Martial and Rooney can cover multiple positions and are frequently moved all over the pitch as well.

I'd include none of those. And if you do you might as well include Smalling, Darmian, Carrick, Mata, McNair, Wilson, in fact basically anyone apart from our keepers.

Being able to play one or two positions (and Fellaini can't even do that, can just play a few different midfield roles) doesn't make someone a utility player, imo. I'd include Blind because he can play CB, LB, CM and Young because he can play LB, RB, LW, RW but I don't think anyone else is that versatile, Jones was used that way under Ferguson, admittedly, not sure I'd still class him as versatile though.

He did have some cracking games as DM? I recall him playing really well at spurs away but Hansen saying he still doesnt think he's good enough on the ball. Kinda true.

Bad loss for us, get well soon Tony V.

Jesus don't be dramatic or anything. Players get impact injuries all the time and usually play on and more times than not end up being nothing serious. How exactly does it show Van Gaal's stubbornness when as soon as Valencia made the medical team aware that he was in pain and unable to continue he subbed him? The idea that every single thing that goes wrong on the pitch is somehow Van Gaal's fault is ridiculous at times

Very bad loss for us, as we are so short for cover along the entire right hand side of our team, all positions Valencia can do a great job in.

He is a very likeable player and the epitome of the versatile United squad player. Gutted for him.

Get well quick Antonio.

We are an embarrassment and a shambles of a club once again.

It was the derby, he shud have went off/been took off as soon as he realised he wasn't running it off, not after playing on for 20mins over each side of the break!

He only visibly struggled with it for a few minutes then was fine until he went down and came off so its hardly Van Gaal's fault. He gets treatment at 3:35 in this video then hobbles for a few minutes then is running normally until he goes down and comes off so how does it highlight Van Gaal's stubbornness when the player himself isn't complaining of pain or showing any visible signs of a serious injury?

Obvious that you clearly saw/heard Valencia telling LvG "No!!! I cant play second half. I think my leg is broken" and LvG replying "Wtf!! Like bollocks you cant play. You run till your legs give up and you need to be stretchered off"

Squad is starting to look stretched and we are just in November. I am worried now about what the state of the squad will be around the holiday season.

Get well soon, Tony.

We should be covered with Darmian our long term RB as well as others like McNair, Young and Jones that can fill in. I bet Blind can too.

Also, the injury happens during a really innocuous challenge. Which makes it even less likely that he had done some serious damage and will have been part of the decision-making process about whether he was fit to continue.

I'd love to know the diagnosis. Strange seeing someone moving so freely after what must have been a fairly serious injury.

West Brom's Steven Reid once played a full 45 minutes with a broken fib a while back. Just shows how innocuous some of these injuries can be.

You do realise this video isn't real time?! I was at the game, he wasn't 'running normally' at all. He should have came off, in the very least, he should never have reappeared after the half.

This doesn't even make any sense.

I didn't say it was in normal time but you can quite clearly see him running normally in a lot of the clips after the injury. He went down in the 22nd minute then came back on and played on until the 81st minute so he obviously wasn't in a huge amount of discomfort and didn't think it was that serious himself. These are grown men who have been playing for years and know their own bodies not children so obviously Van Gaal is going to trust the player if he tells him he's okay to play on so I don't see how this can be blamed on Van Gaal at all. These type of injuries can be misleading a lot of the time they can be very sore for a few minutes then go a bit numb and you almost forget about it until it gets sore again a few hours later when the adrenaline or whatever wears off. Valencia didn't show any signs of wanting to come off so its more a case of an innocuous clash unfortunately ending up in a worst case scenario rather than the gross negligence which you described.

I 'quite clearly' saw him struggle for the 60minutes... SIXTY MINUTES he stayed on the pitch with an injury which sidelined him for 5months.

It was the derby, there's no room for 'unfortunate'. Between Valencia, medical staff and Van Gaal they should have been able to better assess the situation and take action accordingly. Its Man Utd, not Sunday League!

You're just basically ignoring everything I'm saying and repeating that its the derby as if that has any relevance to anything so no point in having a discussion with you

Valencia played on against Olympiakos with basically one eye. He definitely doesn't come off the pitch easy.

He might not know the severity of the injury. Is he just supposed to go off after a knock?

No but there are too many reports about our players not reporting injuries. There was Rojo just some time back and now Smalling too.

Probably considers it brave too when it's just stupid.

It's not stupid. Plenty of times playing through pain won't do any more damage. Even in this instance, for all we know all the damage was done in the initial incident and playing through pain caused just that. Pain. Enduring pain for the sake of your team is brave, not stupid.
