Antonio Valencia faces five months out.

Equadorian ace sounds so glamorous and exciting.

Bad news for us. We are looking seriously thin at the back right now. We really only have Darmian or young and then CB playing out of position to cover that RB spot. Which is also made worse when you think that Shaw is out long term as well on the left. Ideally I would like us to go and bring in a proper full back that can cover both sides. Though I'd want to target a long term prospect that will help us beyond this season as well instead of playing wingers and CB there all the time. If we can bring someone like that in, then go for it, if not we may just have to struggle our way through with our current options.

Its an opportunity for United to buy a fullback and become less dependent on makeshift wingers to play in the role

Very bad news if true. Our best right-back for me. We're so much more dangerous attacking from the right when he's playing over Darmian. And his defensive qualities are underrated. His positional awareness isn't great but he's very handy in one-on-ones due to his strength and pace.

This means we're down to one natural full-back in the first-team squad.

What a blow to him and us, he had started the season well and was looking like a better partner for Mata on the flank.

I hope someone's put Nobby on suicide watch.

Valencia is tough steak, he might make it back sooner than expected, if not Young and Darmian will be fine as the latter is meant to be our 1st choice RB.

I was impressed by the Cska RB Fernandes. Never heard of him before, but played great in th first game against us. I was impressed.

Oh this is dreadful. I thought all he got was a kick. But never thought this will be a full blown injury.
Time for Darmian to step up and seal the spot.

So was I, at first. Then the more I thought about it the more I realised he wasn't very good at defending. His performance at OT wasn't the greatest.

How did he get injured? I don't remember the incident, if there was an incident.

Not seen that game at OT, so cant comment. Although i trust van Gaal to do the right thing/buy the right player. If he isnt interested in him, for a good reason then.

Blessing in disguise here. Never really should be starting for us and gives Van Gaal the push to sign an actual fullback to compete with Darmian for that right back position. Worryingly short on cover until January now though...

So... Valencia and Shaw out leaving us with Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Young, Blind and Darmian. That's a grand total of 1 out, and out fullback, who's 5 yellow cards away from another suspension. Young probably won't play as an attacker for the rest of the season. That also means one less attacking option, leaving us with Martial, Rooney, Mata, Memphis and Lingard upfront. Porbably be wise to recall Januzaj asap. Definitely need a full back, too.

Aw man I actually love Jermaine Jackson :( such a good squad player.

Darmian first choice, Young / Jones / McNair could all play in if worst comes to the worst.

Shame though as this was bedding in quite nicely as his new go to position

Squad starting to look a little stretched

Thankfully we've good cover in Darmian/Young

It makes a lot of sense to bring back Adnan if Young is playing regularly enough at right back
Yep, this whole small squad bollox is backfiring already and weve hardly had any injuries.

It was blatantly obvious he had a genuine injury in the game and it's just pure negligence that we let him play on. I don't think it's the cause of the long-term nature of the injury but it's seriously stupid all the same.

Oh come on. What had you so convinced at the time that this was a season ending injury, as opposed to something he could run off?

It is pretty bizarre that something he was able to play on with (I didn't even know he had an injury, and I watched the entire time) ends up with him needing surgery and being out for five months. I wonder was it an injury that irked a previous problem or something?

Still, unfortunate, he's actually been decent at right back this season, arguably better there than Darmian in recent games, and now we're going to have to get used to Young/Jones at right back.

I dunno why there's so much cloak and dagger about the injury. Nothing came out of the club until after he posted a picture on Instagram with his foot in a massive cast, post-op. And we still don't know exactly what sort of injury he picked up. Wasn't it reported as being a problem with his thigh at the time?!

Darmian should be first choice so we only need cover. Should be fine with McNair or Jones. Might as well use Young there who isn't considered as winger option anyway.

Both full backs out for at least another 5 months. Grim. More square pegs in round holes will damage how good our defence has been up to now. Darmian and Rojo can't play every game. Blind and Jones can fill in on the left and right respectively, but we also need them to play centrally, as surely Smalling is going to need some rest.

Varela is a vastly inferior version of Rafael. Nowhere near good enough, imo.

At least Valencia will be back in time to play in the CL final.
hes not but he wasnt given proper chance, his play is very similar to rafas and maybe thats why lvg doesnt rate him.. cbj, tuanzebe both ahead of him already, shame..

I think Young cn cover for Valenci well, hes intelligent player with good positional sense, he would be my no1 for the rb spot, second darmian if he rediscover his some sort of form and third Mcnair if he¨s fit,, than play round with cbj.. we got it covered but could do better with better quality which we may not find in the market..

Is reid already with u21? and hows he doing? ready anytime soon?

In terms of full-backs, we've plenty of cover. Shaw and Darmian were first-choice, with Valencia/Young/Rojo/Blind/McNair all capable back-ups (plus whoever we can promote from the U-21s) That's more than enough options to start the season with.

5 months for a foot injury? That doesn't sound correct at all? That's nearly as long as Shaw with his leg!

Gutted for Valencia though, he's done really well recently and although not our most talented he works his ass off every game and always gives 100%. We will definitely miss his pace/strength against the speedier wingers.

Personally i prefer backups to be naturals in the position that they are backing up.
