Isnt as simple as that. They need to get him to sign a contract.

He has two years left, and through shirt sales and results he is worth more in that time than anything United could bid for him.

Not really. They have to think long term am afraid. If he makes it clear that he wont sign a contract, they'd surely have to consider selling him for a huge price. Part of that fee would then be added to the bale deal to secure his signature. You cant allow a player worth 70mil odd to run his contract down, not even Real Madrid.

I dont think he's going to come back here though. My point is besides that.

You get out of here with those poisonous remarks!

Weird choice given that he asked for it. I also expected Danny to take the #9 this season.

Looked good when he came on today. Hopefully he'll find his old form this season

Without defaulting to Raul, name them then. Name another club where the No.7 is as heralded as at United.

As The Neviller said, Fergie himself talked up the No.7 shirt when he gave it to Ronaldo and has done so since so the No.7 shirt is a special shirt for United.

Liverpool? Callaghan, Keegan, Dalglish...

Means feck all this.

Kinda feel for Valencia though, his confidence must be shot to not feel worthy of a specific squad number. Valencia strikes me as a very serious man who'd take things to heart.

So it does mean something then?

Means feck all, then says it means that his confidence must be shot as he doesn't feel worthy.

Best, Robson, Beckham, Cantona, Ronaldo.....

Are we on a merry-go-round, because it feels like we are going around in circles here?

So, what you are saying is that in the 70-odd years that players have worn numbers on their shirts, we have had five great players in the number 7 shirt. What about the dozens of players who could have been rated anywhere between poor to good that wore it? What about all the other clubs with great players who just happened to wear the same number on their shirt? For every Ronaldo, there's been a Clayton Blackmore, a Ralph Milne or a Michael Owen. This 'cult of the seven' thing is modern nonsense.

Squad numbers haven't existed for 70 odd years. In the 20 odd that they have our number 7s have consistently been excellent players who were often the talisman of our team (up until Owen).

There's no point arguing with this, the United number 7 has significance above any other number. Stop being a gimp.

THe superstitious fecker  Have to love him. Hopefully he'll get back the form he had with that number.

If this genuinely is nothing to do with muppety transfer conspiracies, I'd find it incredibly worrying that a Manchester United player considers himself not mentally up to the pressure of wearing a certain number.

This. Grow a pair Valencia and prove yourself.

From all I've seen from him (those kissing rituals he goes through when scoring and all that) he probably really is just a bit superstitious and getting back the number 25 makes him believe his form will come back.
Quite common in professional sport.

I don't think it's worrying. If he reckons he might play better without the weight of expectation then so be it.

Though I'm not really into the whole "significance of the number" thing, I think that he should have kept the 7 shirt. Valencia is one of my favourite players and some people might say he's being humble or just superstitious, but he shouldn't let a dip in form force him to back out on the number he requested. If playing with 25 on his back again makes him gain some confidence and we see some better performance then in the long run it shouldn't matter too much I suppose.

If Ronaldo returns then we'll finally have someone who actually deserve that special number. Valencia is a good player but he's nowhere near his two predecessors

Ronaldo and...Owen?

touche.

For a strange reason my sub consious mind refuse to accept the overrated former Liverpool poster boy as a former United player. Its easier to accept the likes of Bebe or Miller then him.

I'm very worried and disappointed with Valencia by this.

He's becoming a huge prima donna, who's more concerned with his AV25 brand and being in the limelight than actually playing football.
