For me, it's damage limitation. He started the fire and now he's been advised to put it out. Assuming there is contact between the clubs, it seems to me that it is not yet at an advanced stage, so it would be better for the player to act as if he's staying put.

Not sure if we ever do end up paying a buy out clause, even if there is one? I thought buy-out clauses are a bit complex in practice and that clubs end up negotiating instead, but could be wrong.
Also, talks between our club and the player are probably not at an advanced stage either. The player has probably been put under pressure to distance himself from the remarks he made this week until his future is properly sorted out.
The title has to be changed, no mention of any mattress.

If any one of our players came out and starting speaking like that direct to the media we'd all be seething and rightly so. If he stays then his rep takes a hit too. It's still on in my opinion.
