Griezmanns clause still isn't cheap though. It'll be the biggest transfer ever that hasn't involved PSG.
Dortmund has the bulk of that money now and I don't see Antoine going there tbh.
Its just people scaring themselves. Look at Barca, their club is a mess. Leo could leave and they won't come close to Madrid this year yet people think Griezmann will join an Atletico rival like this to win things? Where is the upside? Antoine obviously loves Atletico after all.
This "small" fee has the realistic possibility of being the most expensive transfer of next summer.
Anyway he was willing to join us last summer when we finished 6th. I can't see him turning us down when we're so much healthier as a club.

I wonder if Griezmann would mean selling or letting go of Mata. Mata isn't getting younger, doesn't have pace...
I think it would. I don't mind seeing some of our good players replaced as long as they're replaced by much better players.

It's definitely Mata in the first XI who'll make way for Griezmann if he comes. But he doesn't need to leave. He could still be an option from the bench.

Do we know that for sure? Things can change though anyway - with the new stadium and stuff who knows.

(although I know in Fifa I'll be signing him straight away ;) )

Isn't Mata's contract up soon? Not that it is an indicator of anything, I tend to agree he'd be good to keep in the squad. I just wonder if he is in Mourinho's longer term plans of we do acquire Griezmann. I also wonder if he might go the other way in any potential deal as it would seem a preferable destination for him.

I believe he's conning in Jan and wouldn't really surprise me if he didn't play in the CL group stage

If the system we are currently using is the bueprint going forward then I think Griezmann will be an upgrade on Mata.

---------Lukaku
Martial---Mkhi---Griezmann

Don't see why Martial is in there ahead of Rashford. Also I think Mourinho wanted Greizmann for the role behind Lukaku.

I think he could play on the right, currently where Mata is playing and drift in and out from there. We definitely need an attacking RB in that case. AG and Mikhi can interchange during the match always.

I hope Mata stays, but that would be unfair to him. Would be sad to see him leave United.

I feel like he could still get a fair amount of game time as a utility/super sub. Always seems to be more effective off the bench anyway. Would love it if he was happy doing that.

Jose's final comment on that times interview about not waiting for the third window to make his team world class could be a hint that he might try to get Griezmann before the next summer perhaps?
He has also said it would take 3 summers before he would be satisfied with his squad so by next September we should have a squad to compete with the reals and barcas

Well it's one or the other and I think Martial has better dribbling and finishing, so I went with him, obviously they will share that role. I think Mourinho likes the control of having more of a #10 than a SS, which is what Griezmann is, so I can see him drifting off the RW the way Mata plays.

Jesus wept.

Yes of course we replace Mata with Griezmann. Its a no brainer.

Getting better players means having a better team.

I doubt he would be a replacement since Juan may not start every game this year. Griezmann obviously would and keeping Mata would be a no brainer for needed depth and squad size.

--------------De Gea--------------
Valencia--Bailly--Lindelof--Shaw
--------Pogba-------Matic--------
Mkhitaryan-Griezmann-Rashford
--------------Lukaku--------------

Imagine what a boost that would be along with Zlatan coming back around that time as well.

Griezmann isn't a #10 or a winger, he's a SS.

442 if we sign Griezmann.

New RB----Lindelöf---Bailly------New LB
--------------Matic---------Pogba------------Mkhitaryan------------------------------Martial

The guy who runs the English site for Di Marzio actually did an interesting AMA on the Chelsea reddit page earlier. One nugget that stood out to me was that he said that Bayern of all teams were quietly the favourites to sign Griezmann before the transfer ban.

The specific comment:

And the AMA as a whole:

Some caveats here; Di Marzio is much more reliable with rumours in Serie A, but this would have been fascinating if true.

Isn't the transfer ban already in effect ?

Also, i wouldn't get too excited about Bayern signing Griezmann as they would have to smash their transfer record, and oh BTW, Ancelotti may not be there next year so it would be weird for them to move for any new players before the wishes of any new managers who may take over.

Matic on the right wing?

Yeah, he was speaking about this past summer.

Bayern were not mentioned once when it came to AG. So I am guessing the phone call from AG to United didnt take place then?

I don't recall Di Marzio or any of his goonies coming out with Griezmann to Bayern during the summer, odd.

Yeah I think it needs to be taken with a fecking lorry's worth of salt but if true it's intriguing. I only posted it since it's a possibility I frankly hadn't considered, though in light of his German heritage perhaps it makes some sense? Still think United are odds on favourites to sign him, mind.

Well, that's likely because once the transfer ban was confirmed it was clear he wasn't leaving.

I keep up to date with Amoyal and Di Marzio on twitter, there was no Bayern talk, which makes you wonder wtf he was on about.

Hmm, interesting. If I recall correctly, Atleti were transfer banned on June 1 which is pretty early; perhaps nothing tangible materialized because of that? By all accounts as soon as that ruling came through Griezmann decided to stay for another year out of loyalty so maybe they didn't bother tweeting about it?

I find this all very odd, especially considering Griezmann himself confirmed it was United he was moving to. His agent then also confirmed he would have been at United had it not been for the transfer ban.

I have a feeling we will buy him in Jan and he will come in the summer.

They sure played up the United angle

I'd like to think we'd get him Jan but it just seems unlikely. If we got him and with Zlatan returning then we'd be hopefully ready to challenge for the league

I think we will have some agreement in Jan with both player and club so he joins us by Summer. No way he could leave in the midway during the CL.

I agree with this - can't see him leaving in Jan.

Yeah, the fact the Costa thing is a loan with a compulsory summer purchase would suggest that's probably the case.
