Anthony Martial | AEK Athens

Read an interview with Phil Jones who said Martial was the worst trainer at the club, and couldn't care less about fines for being late. I think Jose might have been right in his assessment.

If I'm honest, I didn't even know he had signed for a club.

I thought when he went to Sevilla he would really kick on. They even had R9 unveil him.

What more could he want? Great city, good league, competitive club.

Also side note, it's his birthday today. Happy birthday Martial FC

did he not like playing for us or something? He was injured every game for us yet for AEK he’s in the squad every week and playing 90 mins in most games. His injury’s suddenly disappeared?

Less intensity methinks.

He's obviously bathed in the river styx

No I don't think so because it's not a real place. I think it was used mostly as a metaphor for the transition between two separate states, usually the living and the dead, but more figuratively any sense of change from one place to the next.

He may have a bath at home though
Go to the house of hades!

Physically and mentally. Read a Phil Jones quote the other day that Martial was one of the worst players for timekeeping and picking up fines. He just didn’t care apparently. I think Jose was probably right on this one despite Martial’s obvious talent.

Exactly one month inbetween. Is this going to be monthly thing?

Look at how Martial performed after Mourinho and before the injuries broke Martial. Mourinho got it wrong.

Genuinely forgot I wrote it before, evidently I didn’t forget the Jones quote;).

Martial was one of the most talented youngsters I’ve seen at OT in the post SAF era, I liked him and I kinda wish Hojlund had half his talent, but two good seasons in nine years is not good enough. Injuries played a part but if Jose was seeing his attitude and saying it wasn’t good enough and you have quotes like this, then I’m inclined to believe that he wasn’t a very good professional.

There’s also this weird nostalgia on here for players that continually let us down, they go to a lesser club and start doing mildly well, and everyone starts missing them. I mean, I liked players like Valencia, Blind, Fred and Herrera but I really don’t wish they were still here.

He had surgery last year early 2024. The rest of the season was basically just taking it as easy as he could because it was clear he wasn’t staying and he had to make sure his body was still working in some capacity to keep a career going at 28

It tells you more about how poor Mourinho is with young players. Mourinho had the chance to sculpt and develop a talented 19 year old (not to mention another teenager in Shaw) and monumentally failed, where other more capable managers would've fixed those issues.

That has been a constant theme in Mourinho's career - the ones who managed to get away from Mourinho were better off (see KDB, Salah etc).

I don’t believe Jose ever had a problem with KdB and Salah on the level of attitude and considering that Martial and Shaw have had numerous issues with other managers, it would suggest something of an attitude problem on their part.

I think you can pretty much guess the players who are always late from how they play. It's rarely a shock when you find out who gets the most fines.

Martial yep. Easy to guess.

When I found out Zirkzee has the same problem, not one bit shocked.

People do know he is playing for AEK Athens? Like, Macheda has scored more goals than him?

He can, in no way, be considered an ex-player that is “thriving”

Top scorer in that league is a guy named Moron. That should say it all.

Has Martial and Shaw had numerous issues with other managers?

There’s plenty of quotes from Jose on both KdB and Salah when he was managing Chelsea, they aren’t very positive.

Still better than any striker we have which is mad

Yeah but he’s always been a “the talent’s there” type of player. He never truly realised it, plus was unavailable due to injury most of the time.

With Shaw, let’s be generous and ignore the fitness concerns raised early in his career by Poch, LvG and England managers as him being young and adjusting. he did admit he was actively waiting for Jose to be sacked which I thought was a shocking quote, he also was dropped by Ralf and was then being all passive aggressive in the press “I am happy when I play for England”.

With Martial you have the Jose issues, I remember him sulking in a pre match warm up when Ole was in charge, and matches last year when EtH was screaming at him for his lack of workrate and was then subbed.

The two things aren’t mutually exclusive. Some of Jose’s decisions on young players have been poor. I think with all the evidence available you can say he probably was right on a few of these players though. God knows how they somehow have got 8 or 9 years at the club.

He's really not other than with the ball at his feet. Maybe the memory of him 4-5 years ago.

In recent years he barely moved, had lost a yard of pace and spent a significant amount of time injured. Any modern manager will hate him.

Being shouted at during a match is your interpretation of numerous issues? Having issues with Jose is pretty much standard, the list of players he’s had issues with is pretty fecking long.

And arguing with the manager on the pitch and being subbed because of it, but hey ho, blame the managers.

It was a one off, and players arguing with the manager on the pitch is hardly something new. Salah argued with Klopp, it happens.

And the arguing with Jose and saying he felt betrayed by Ole and that Ole didn’t defend him enough. It wasn’t a good look for him.

It’s hardly problematic to state that you feel let down on the acccount of playing through injuries without getting any recognition for it.

As far as Jose goes, Martial was one of the few players actually performing well when the miserable sod got sacked.

No idea as to why you’re trying to portrait this as numerous issues with managers

He really is IMHO.

Pleased for him. Couldn't cope with the premier league but glad he's out there playing games and scoring goals.
