Technically he is still a brilliant player. The ease with which he took the ball (with pressure from VVD) and played the perfect pass for Rashford would be hard to pull off for the rest of our team. In another moment he turned VVD inside out again making it look easy. His natural ability is insane.

Not sure if I have faith in him consistently delivering but he's an easy pick for first choice CF this season.

martial FC you can eat good tonight. Thought he was great second half. More of the same please!

I can't remember which minute but ETH mentions about losing a player (obviously Martial), who did well in pre-season that has affected our way of playing.

ETH definitely recognises his talents.

He wont leave us however he will always be a good squad playing forward who can start.

Knowone should be an automatic starter, Woodward signing Ronaldo in Linekars back garden really stunted us. I doubt Solskjaer wanted him.

Casemiro, Martinez, Malacia are mentality shifters. These with Mctominay and Fred will help the intensity of the club.

Don’t forget Sanchez arriving mid-season when he was one of our best players and him barely being picked anymore. He’s been messed around a fair bit.
True, Martial had been outstanding that season and was immediately dropped to the bench, as I recall.

He literally injured his knee ligaments in the 2nd game over there after getting a goal or assist in his first....
He got injured very soon after joining them.

Missed 3 games with a muscle injury. Played 12, 1 goal, 1 assist. I watched several games and he was utterly abysmal, worse than he hsd been at Utd before he left. Towards the end he wasn't even in several match day squads.

He played well yesterday, we all know he's got talent, it's just about whether or not he decides to use it. So let's not jizz all up in our pants after one half and pretend like we haven't seen this before. His first game against Liverpool springs to mind. He now needs to back it up next week, and the week after and so on. If he can put in performances like that every week then yeah, he'll be a great asset.

What happened after that?

Did his confidence good when Erik threw him in after just returning back from an injury when he had the option of Ronaldo, that's a big compliment and when you trust Martial he tends to repay you.

Going to be a LOT of people in here with egg on their faces and i cannot wait to see it

Well you've already been waiting a good few years. That egg must be rife by now.

Martial won't change. He looked good yesterday. He also looked knackered after 45min.

Almost as if he just returned from injury and has not trained a lot this week.

Well done for describing how competitive sports leagues work, I'm glad I now understand that it isn't just 1 game.

No surprise is it? Been injured the last few weeks. Intense game to come back to.

So much better playing as a striker than he is on the left... just excellent play all around. Holds the ball up under pressure, turns and sets off a counter attack, consistently. Nobody else in the squad really has that ability the way he does. He's even been putting in a shift off the ball and in defence.

His ability has never really been in question... if he can keep going with this attitude and work ethic, we've got some player on our hands.

It's not like his going to start in it anyway, no way he'll be ahead of benzema and Mbappe.
Right now he's fighting for a place in the squad.

The worry with Martial is still the same as ever - he hasn't looked fit enough for a while, and has lost quite a lot of pace since his arrival at Utd despite still being very young. Of course last night can't confirm nor refute any of this as it was his first game this season and he'll maybe do a Neymar and regain proper energy levels this year.

Great performance yesterday, hope he'll be back to a starter position soon.

He looked more arsed yesterday than he has in a long time, which is a start. Nice assist for Rashford and generally decent hold up play. Encouraging.

Just shows what happens when you're made to feel wanted + have faith in your talents.

ETH has clearly done a great job with him so far. Martial might never be a 30 goal a season striker, but what he brings to the team with his hold up play and ability to turn a defence and get on the front foot is invaluable.

Especially if you're playing with wing forwards who want to run in behind. I'm glad his pre season form hasn't dropped off with the injury.

Even in pre season he seemed to press and work harder than I’ve ever seen before -

seems like the laziness was almost because the managers didn’t ask for a high work ethic in the first place.

That's what happened.

Let's see if this is another false dawn. I hope not, he's 26 he needs to start bringing some standards and consistency to his game.

He definitely had a weird inconsistent career at United but in that season after his first Liverpool game, he was excellent and carried the most toothless United attack ever on his own till Rashford got introduced late in the season.

He is reborn yet again but I still have my doubts over whether it's just a purple patch.

He's let me down too many times when it mattered.

Has his hold up play been this level before ? In his earlier days he’d try to dribble and finesse it, now he looks a lot for the pass and that’s something i found refreshing.

He will be our starting CF battling it out with Rashford this year. I’m guessing Ronaldo is out

I thought ETH comments after the game were interesting. He basically said that centre forwards have traditionally been allowed to conserve their energy for attacking explosiveness and goalscoring opportunities, but this is no longer accepted in the modern game. A forward must now have the energy to press and defend from the front, whilst also having the energy to able to spring into action in attack. This could be the manager's message to Martial, who also held up the ball very well when he came on and looked strong under pressure.

He has always been a top player, a great ream player not a prolific striker because he is very unselfish, We will score more goals with him in the team

Yes, it was the base of our all firing 19/20 attack. And he was also better at it than Lukaku or Rashford under Mourinho but rarely used that way, iirc there are games where Martial and Lukaku played together upfront and were complimentary.

You can see the quality when he is on the ball. Martial clearly is an arm around the shoulder player, and it will be interesting to see how Ten Hag manages him this season. He's looker done here for a couple seasons, but then you see the ability that he has and what he can do when bothered, and it sucks you back onto the Martial FC train.

Martial and Rashford have great understanding on the pitch, something that you cannot really say for anyone else. A front 3 of Sancho, Martial and Rashford on paper is full of goals, assists and ability to beat players. What that front 3 desperately lacks is consistency. If Ten Hag can rectify that, and figure out a way to get the best of those 3 when playing against defensive teams, then we might just have a good season.

please stay fit !

Some of the stuff he did was great. His control is a really useful aspect as we saw with his assist, and also near the end where he can get away from a press and take pressure of our defence to buy us time to either attack or kill any momentum for the opposition.

We know there's a world class player in there when he can be arsed so nothing this guy does surprises me but we should stay grounded because we know how fragile he is.
I think E10H will ease him into the starting lineup and we'll see him,and all the forwards, sharing game time with Elanger and rightfully so as he's not let us down when called upon and is still learning his trade and it really helps the squad having a player like Elanger around for rotation.

Probably helps a lot to have at least some short pass options fairly consistently too. Even the previous seasons he showed some class in games when Pogba was positioned nearby him. Now if Rashford, Sancho and one of Eriksen and Bruno play along, Martial will do better than when he has to LW a static striker in a more kick and rush style play. He can dribble and shoot, but he’s never been consistent in such a role.

imo it’s not surprising he was good during LVG-ball and now shows promise during the first signs of ETH-ball.

Then there is of course the resolve issue, but I assume that’s easier if it’s more fun for you to be part of a plan/setup, even if it should be a given to work hard in any scenario. Guess we will have to wait and see what’s become and will come of his mental prowess in the coming months. But dreamy little me is excited
