Yep, just pointing out why lots of people did compare him with Henry. I actually think, if we're trawling through the historical French striker ranks he plays most like Anelka once he'd grown into his lanky frame; good feet, good acceleration, keeps the ball close when dribbling and has that nonchalance of difting past player

I think Benzema is the better comparison because Anelka was a bit more aggressive and direct. Benzema has no issue dropping very deep and literally playing as an attacking midfielder for long periods of time.

He has a lot of making up to do. A half against Liverpool where he did ok is a start. Now he needs to keep it up.
Ok  he was fecking class.

The guy hasn't had a proper coach that suited him in years, and mainly he's struggled with injuries for the past 2 years. Just keep him fit.

They always had a great understanding, we should have built much more on their chemistry years ago rather than buying Zlatan, Lukaku and Ronaldo.

Don’t forget Sanchez arriving mid-season when he was one of our best players and him barely being picked anymore. He’s been messed around a fair bit.

I don't know how anybody can watch that performance and consider it only ok. He was excellent. He did not put a foot wrong. He played exactly how you'd want your #9 to play.

He’s much more of a dribbler than Benzema and much quicker. Better close control as well, but lacks commitment and consistency.

Sure, if we're talking about a 34-year-old Benzema, but do yourself a favor and watch a compilation from his Lyon days and you'll see he was absolutely electric. Flair, dribbling, penetration, the lot.

In fact, go and have a look at a video entitled, "Karim Benzema Was A Beast At Lyon" on YouTube (since I can't post links). You'll see.

Anyway, very impressive half from Martial. Long may it continue. Could have had a goal if Rashford had returned the favor, but alas.

He is patchy but he is the best forward player we have. Too many gave up on him last season despite him having a great 19/20, the best coaches will make use of a player like Martial. Technical, linking CFs are a rare breed, we have one and we should do our best to build around him and make him play well.

That said though he has had great games against the likes of City too in the past - it's the teams that sit back deep that the front line struggles with. Too that end neither Rashford or Sancho help us - one is fast but not a technical dribbler, the other is a technical dribbler but not fast - just one wide player like Dembele or Mane that can take a man on and stretch play would help us a lot against the weaker sides.

He’s a class player. We play our best football with him in the team.

The excuses are being rolled out. No good coach for 2 years.. injured... too much competition.. blah blah blah

What about his holiday in Spain? Was it the coach, the weather? Injuries?

He was good tonight, let's see if he can keep it up.

He was so composed and dare I say it, dominant on the ball. Really impressed in pre season and again tonight - looks like he has a point to prove, finally.
Taking the #9 off him in favour of bigger names really soured the relationship. He’s always wanted to be our #9 and he’s clearly in his element with everything going through him. Pretty much nailed on as our striker if he can keep himself fit, which is the boon he’s never had before this season.

Our best football will come with him in the team like it has done for a number of years.

Yep, Benzema was a beast when he was young and very quick too.

I've always clung to the idea of this version of Martial. Had pretty much given up on seeing it again though. This version of Martial is an absolute asset to the club

Very true this.

He literally injured his knee ligaments in the 2nd game over there after getting a goal or assist in his first....

I remember back then (at Lyon), Benzema reminded me a bit of Brazilian Ronaldo. He’d take the ball and run past/round 2 or 3 players, but was also powerful. He’s still brilliant, but has ended up a very different player to what he was as a teenager.

He got injured very soon after joining them.

I know real life events have different impacts on players but he is on/off more than any other player post SAF.

Smart move from Ten Hag to bring him on and favour the left channel, as TAA was having an absolute mare. Shades of his debut goal at the Stretford End the way the ball bobbled about on that side of the box, and quick thinking to try and nick it back to VDB. If he stays fit he'll contribute a lot this season.

Martial has always seemed to do well when he's the main man. Whenever we've brought in serious competition for his place (Zlatan, Cavani, Ronaldo) he went to pieces.

Erik clearly is a big fan of his though. Could be a big player for us in this new system as he keeps the ball better than all our forwards do, including Ronaldo.

Long way to go yet though but promising signs.

He looked like a high class experienced centre forward tonight.
It’s probably another false dawn or maybe this coach can unlock something others couldn’t.

He's class. Back to goal play is on a different level to any other player at our club. So important to the way ten Hag wants to play, too. If fit, he must start. Brilliant half from, Tony.

There are many cases of a manager and a player just fitting together for some reason. It really seems like this will be the case with Ten Hag and Martial.

Brilliant but will he just go back to his normal self in the next game?

What a joy to watch tonight.

Had an aura of confidence and the right amount of patience in his play.

Even greeted the ballboy near the end. A side of him I can't remember seeing before.

I'm pretty sure I saw him gesturing to the crowd to gee them up before the ballboy incident too. Not the sort of demeanour I expect from him, but long may it continue! He's so silky on the ball. I'd given up on him completely by the end of last season tbh after years aboard his hype train, but it would be a godsend if he could stay fit and motivated. There's not many centre-forwards available with a comparable skill set.

Going to be a LOT of people in here with egg on their faces and i cannot wait to see it
