The real question is: who would buy him, and how much could we realistically get for him?

Still a good age, decent scoring record apart from this season, France international. On the other hand, very high wages, post-covid market and, let's be honest, despite his undoubted skills he isn't an elite level striker and never has been.

I'd take £35-40m for him and put it towards a reliable forward who will go straight into the first team and raise our levels.

Most for the last 40 years.

Please correct me if you can name any big crunch games were Martial has been the difference?
I'm pretty sure he scored home and away against both Chelsea and City last season for example. Liverpool on his debut. Semi final of the FA cup against Everton. The list goes on and on but he generally loves a big game.

He won’t be easy to sell as he is on relatively high wages.

- If Mbappe moves, will PSG take him ? I recall there was some talk of him going to Spurs when Poch was there. However attacking areas are somewhat similar to Neymar.

- Another likely destination is Inter if Martinez leaves (although not a like for like player).

- AC Milan ? Ibra must be replaced at some point.

- Wild card choice is Athleti. Suarez is also on his last legs.

I believe he’s scored in some pretty high pressure games before too. West Ham last game at Upton Park where we needed a win for top four. Wolfsburg in the champions league groups when we needed a win. But we didn’t get the result so I doubt these moments will be remember we as much.

Martial definitely tries hard. He may have the sulk look but that's because he's disappointed in himself which is a good thing. Means he constantly wants to do more!

Who would that be? Haaland, Mbappe, Benzema, Lewandowski, Kane, Ronaldo....and? I don’t see many viable options out there.

A year ago, people would’ve said Werner, but maybe not as many now. Jimenez was an option, but not sure now after the injury if he still is. Vardy? Aguero? Andre Silva? Not for me.

Tries hard?
Martial.... tries hard?

I would accept “Martial is better than Mbappe” as more factual than “Martial tries hard”

i can’t believe you’ve watched him play and genuinely think that

Unless it’s a wind up (which is more likely)

Oh how I missed his silent domination.

The only thing he seems to focus on doing at the moment is diving at least one dive a game. Nice one though.
Scuba diving is diving with the help of a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, called a scuba.

What is white text?
White text is what people sometimes use when they are making a funny/sarcastic post. I was expecting your post to be a joke post as nothing you said was close to being true and I thought you were on a wind up... highlight below this post to see my white text.

Martial is shit and lazy, who have you been watching?

That would be amazing. Can you imagine Diego Simeone trying to get him to run?

PSG would never take him as their main striker, they know better. Does Monaco still have a sugar daddy?

MLS is most realistic. Can't see a legitimate competitive club taking him on his wages.

He's had 2 good season in 6. His first season and last season he was good. The rest he's been poor to average.

Is that good enough? Not for me.
Yes and no. Martial was good in his third season until Mourinho stupidly dropped our best performing attacker to play Sanchez in that position. He was also good in his only real run of starts he got in his fourth season, but unfortunately he was constantly in and out of the team because of illness and injuries.

So overall I would say he's had two good seasons, two poor seasons, and two seasons where he was good when he got a run of games but through no real fault of his own he didn't get enough of that.

I think the short take is many say Martial isn't good due to the bad season he's endured. However prior to that he's had a decent contribution. It was barely a few months ago that the Mason, Martial, Marcus (MMM) thread was in full swing. Things change quickly in football I don't think Anthony is a bad player but we need someone who's a level above to contribute. Only a Kane / Haaland offer the improvement worth significance.

There's plenty of strikers that offer a significant improvement over how Martial has performed this season. Now this might end up being a freak season and he gets back to last season's form and stays there, but it would be incredibly risky to go into next season relying on that.

Actually, Sadio Mane or Lacazette had a poor season too. But as long as their link-up plays are good like Martial, they will keep playing.

Define trying hard. When you say "trying hard", what do you see him trying hard to do?

On the ball or off the ball?

The MLS! Are you taking the piss. Martial is absolutely class at his best. There will be a host on interested clubs if we sell him. Yes he’s had w poor season but there’s no need for this hyperbolic nonsense.

Every time I see his name in the starting XI, I think to myself “we are starting with 10 men today”. Everything about him, his effort, his movement, his facial expressions, his body language, his lazy diving when he might actually try to score instead, the way he (doesn’t) properly celebrate goals or smile when we score...is so anti-United and uninspiring to watch. It riles me to watch him drifting to the left when he is starting up front. It annoys me that every time he has some competition, he sulks into a severe lull of form. Other than all of this, what a great player he is.

I mentioned his wages as a disincentive.

If he wants to take a pay cut and make the French NT, fair play to him. In that case, yes, clubs will be lining up. Lyon or Dortmund would love to have him.

If he doesn't want to give up his salary, LA galaxy/Houston rockets/Galatasaray/Al-something is more realistic than PSG/Madrid/City/Bayern/Chelsea if we even managed to sell him.

Because "poor season" is an understatement. When's the last time you saw such a drastic decline in a player that wasn't caused by age or injury?

I thought you're original comment had to have been somewhat tongue in cheek but you actually are that stupid... good to know.

Which clubs do you think could afford him and would be wise to take him?

Would like to hear your answer and I would appreciate it if you stopped telling me things I already know.

I think it would be a too big gamble (hoping he regains form) for the price (wages + fee), because his kind of drop in form unrelated to age or injury is rare.

Given the lack of talent in the striker department in general, with players like Benzema, Lewandowski, Ibra, Aguero, Suarez, Cavani, etc all coming to the end of their careers, I would imagine he would be on most top clubs short list of strikers. Do you honestly believe that he's MLS level?

I doubt any of the top teams want him and smaller teams won't pay those wages. I think he might become a bench warmer for us.

He's on big money here right? If so he's not going anywhere, even if we try to flog him off. Just have to hope he finds his form again and proves his worth.

No, I don't believe he's MLS level. He'd certainly be one of the better strikers there. Although better players than him (even taken their old age into account) have played there, like Ibra. I don't watch a lot of MLS, so I could be wrong.

My point was that if we managed to sell him, that would be a realistic destination. It wasn't meant as an insult, I could just as well have said Galatasaray. It would be an unambitious move for the $$$.

The most realistic scenario is that he stays here for a long time because Ed will keep extending his fat contract with a raise to protect his value untill he walks out the door for free.

I don't think there's a lot of missing talent in the striker department. There's a lot of better performing, smaller name strikers out there. I think a City, Real, Atletico, etc would rather take a punt on a talent like Malen for probably less than Martial's fee and half his salary.

With how long Martial's dip in form has been ongoing, I think an "unproven" talent has the same risk associated with them as Martial does. They'd buy him with the hope he regains form, playing at roughly the same level as United where we've been trying for months to play him into form. His previous poor runs lasted half a year at most, there's a possibility this time it's permanent.

It's not unlikely one of the big clubs will go for him, but it would be bad business on their part. Kind of like how Chelsea went for Falcao after his season with us.

Even after the season he's had, if he was available at anything under 50M I reckon we'd have a lot of the top clubs sniffing around. His technical and physical skills are undeniable and a lot of modern coaches would love a player like him up top. Atletico went and bought Morata after his horror show at Chelsea for 67M. Scouts and sporting directors don't have the same recency bias as we do and they also look at finer details. People have a tendency to write off players because of a period of poor form but that's not how it really works.

People love to criticise him but at his best he’s a better player than Rashford who is lauded. Doesn’t excuse his awful season but last season Martial was easily the better player. I still think if you switched their nationalities the narrative would look completely different.

Fair enough. Some of the teams you mentioned are quite frankly better than us. But yeah you're right, I probably have a greater recency bias and now I could easily see him going to Milan at least.

For slightly less than 50m, Ed should drive him.

I'm still assuming he stays and hopefully the pandemic, current events and empty stadiums are what's gating him and he'll kick on. I just wouldn't put my money on it.

Obviously when Declan Rice is one our most mentioned transfer targets, you know nationality plays a role.

I mean you could argue peak Martial > peak Rashy, but I don't think there's much of a debate when you factor in consistency.

Milan or Inter bound as soon as they get some money from sales. PSG would be surprising but he could be the 'Firmino' type playing for Neymar/Mbappe as the brazilian does for Salah and Mane.

I actually expected Martial to become that player for us middle-long term next to Rashford and Greenwood. Playing back to goal, getting into the hole to link up play and so on, adding more things to his game with time. But someone spending the whole season looking half arsed and barely producing is not trustable in the long run.

You can allow some margin to a young player like Greenwood in a bad period to find himself, but as much as I like Martial on his good days he has no margin to disappear for a whole season at this stage of his career. I expect him to be shown the door as soon as we have a good chance to do it.

And how many times have we seen “his best” this season? The criticism levelled at him this season are more than justified he’s been shite for 90% of the season, there’s no narrative being created because of his nationality.

I don't think we'll sell him this summer, I don't think there's much chance of that and I honestly can't see him maintaining this shitty form beyond this season, he's way too talented. Hopefully, like you say, when the fans get back in it'll help him.
