Wow, so we only had like 2 penalties or maybe 3 or 4 in the league that season? Compared to this season where we have something like 13 pens

Imagine if Martial was our pen taker....

Well you have to attack to win penalties :D

I don't even think that he currently demonstrates any sort of selfishness, he often looks for his teammates in situations where many other attackers would shoot, not just strikers.
Yeah to be honest I would say one of his issues over the years has been not being selfish enough. Had opportunities to shoot but would look for a pass.

Of course, and that's what I mean in regards to my initial post. He has the drive and hunger now to take on these chances whereas under Mourinho he definitely didn't so right now it's healthy.
He did, it's just that the cnut tried his best to sap it out of him, in vain. Instead Martial ended up saving his job for a few months longer than it should have been.

This. He could have downed tool and see Mourinho get the sack earlier but instead played his heart out and kept him in the job longer than he deserved.

The only reason Martial is still at United is because he has drive and hunger, the same is true for Rashford. Under Mourinho their good games weren't rewarded, they would both be out of the team or criticized at the first opportunity. They both competed against each others during Mourinho's tenure and beat the other repeatedly, neither gave up. Martial was one of our three best players during Mourinho's least season, Shaw and Pogba being the others which is ironic because he tried his best to question these players characters.

Little wrong with the drive and/or hunger, but you're underestimating the difficulty of playing under a manager that didn't fancy him whatsoever. Either way it's typical Mourinho, he needs his players to live up to certain expectations and he's more than happy to throw players under the bus just to see what reaction he gets, if they are worthy of his trust or not. Mourinho was more than happy to sod off Martial in order to get Perisic from inter, even Willian from Chelsea, the club just didn't allow it, and even when Rashford and Martial had a flying start to the season while playing out wide he was happy to bring in Sanchez to put two players that were doing great further down the pecking order. Neither of them, no matter how well they performed, were allowed the comforts of second chances, while Lukaku could underperform for months without losing his starting position.

@JPRouve @UncleBob @OldTrevil

Fair, as United fans you'll all have seen him play more than I but from a neutral perspective on the pitch when I have seen him he looks like he has more drive/hunger in him than he did previous but I'll be happy to be wrong as I'm not a United fan.

I should qualify my previous statement, Martial showed character under Mourinho particularly when you consider the way he was treated by the manager. But it's true that his demeanor has always been different when he plays upfront, he seems to know what he is doing and will play with a lot more purpose than when he is wide, he makes more runs and his generally more physical. So that's maybe where your impression comes from?

I'd say confidence and movitation is higher for sure. Maybe even has just learnt when/how to press better and more efficiently.

It helps having a manager believe in you and not berate you every time you make a mistake/miss a chance. He knows Ole trusts him which is showing.

Personally I think he's a type of player that is emerging more in the last couple of years that isn't a LW or a ST but is a LF/CF - I see a lot of similarities to Richarlison which is why I think there were rumours about you going in for him when we were managed by Silva, they are players that float around a little bit, are comfortable in picking up the ball in different positions and running with it, making more runs like you say, just utilising all their strengths rather than being restricted to a 'role' that perhaps he was in the wide position.

I think he's far more aggressive now, I think the coaching he's been receiving has been working and I think his confidence is through the roof. I think the drive and hunger were always there but I do see what you're saying.

He's definitely worked a lot harder pressing this season than before.

He's been absolutely quality since the break.

Even though he can play very well on the left, his runs and plays are more natural when in the middle and he is consequently more involved in the game. Even in the few times he played CF for Mourinho, the signs were there but the narrative was in another universe. He has definitely improved his game and is much stronger, and is now playing with a manager that trust and challenges him to be better. I can see how one would get a perception that he is trying harder now, but it's just a combination of growth, having a sensible manager that puts him in the best position to succeed and finally a team that is capable of finding him in dangerous positions.Unfortunate that our defence shit their bed last night as his performance was worthy of a win.

That is a fair assessment. I think that a lot of it does come down to confidence and where he is more natural in playing.

Agreed with you. Imho, he even only starts showing this intensity after the COVID break.

My main critic about him as a striker was his lack of intensity, and the other was consistency. Every world class forward has this intense drive and hunger, and consistency. Martial used to just disappear in games. I'm not sure why some just try to hide this, or saying he has been this good the whole season.

I agree that his aggression and intensity has been impressive since the restart and very welcome addition to his game. I think its mainly to do with confidence.

He must be really frustrated to have put on a performance like that and still didnt win. He's been amazing to be honest, shutting the critics about his "laziness".

The guy has put together a player of the season worthy campaign, half of it while being the main creator and, together with Rashford, the only significant scorers; but apparently he's only been good after the restart. I guess he didn't show top level intensity while hustling for and scoring a crucial away goal again Bruges, fighting four defenders and scoring a genius goal against Partizan, or scoring a glancing header against Chelsea that Drogba would be jealous of, or scoring against City and terrorizing them home and away just to name a few matches. The guy who is known for constantly delivering against our biggest rivals since his debut; but apparently he can only play well without fans. Yea, the agenda is real and you have to applaud the relentlessness

good but bad luck performance yesterday. could have had a hat-trick and 2 assists with better luck

Most likely. That hattrick did him really good. I've never seen him smile that much and genuinely looked very happy before. Sometimes player just need one game to turn it around. I remember Nani did that against Arsenal, and since then he became a different player (in positive way).
I think Greenwood, with those goals after the break, also found his confidence of being able to mix up with the big boys.

Apparently not.

Just FYI there isn't a player in the history of the game who converted every chance. People should get a grip and have some realistic expectation. Otherwise we should be expecting tennis or cricket scores in football.

Yet there’s many players in our history who would have converted that first chance.

We can both praise his performance, but at the same time expect him to bury those sorts of opportunities.

Total agreement, he's been great all season but I think he's been world class since the restart.

It's a matter of frequency, there is no point fixating on one particular occasion because players don't convert them at a 100% rate. More often than not Martial will score the first chance and not the one he actually scored. At the end of the day, Martial is a very efficient striker compared to most top strikers.

Edit: And the strikers that you are referring to missed easier chances too.

This is what happens when majority of the Caf only watch other teams highlights and think other strikers never miss.

This non-critical love in is all a bit weird.

We can both praise a performance but also highlight errors, hence the point of discussion. This place is too one way or the other, you have to either hate a player and call them dross or they’re absolutely flawless - depending on form of course.

There is middle grounds in discussion. We can talk about their individual match performances - Martial had a good game, he took his goal excellently and he had some great natural #9 player when he trapped the ball and passed to Rashford and his general link up play was good throughout. But we can still comment on that first chance no?

I’m hardly calling for him to be dropped or replaced, I’m very happy with him in general and glad he’s taken his opportunity as the central forward this season well. Doesn’t mean I can’t comment on things in a bubble.

Love the man management from Ole, he was well on his way to 'earning' it before the lockdown and he hasn't skipped a beat since the restart with his overall game looking more polished and well rounded than ever.

Been such a breath of fresh air having a former gunman like Ole coaching our young forwards, makes a world of difference for their continued development as attackers.

Go on and name them, let's see if they ever missed the easier chances.

Martial has scored from similar chances many times, no player is going to convert the chances all the time. Even the best or greatest of all time players missed easy chances.

Yeah, RVN, Ronaldo and Rooney have never missed any easy chances and have 100% effectiveness in 1-1. What a load of bs, again.

Wow, so we only had like 2 penalties or maybe 3 or 4 in the league that season? Compared to this season where we have something like 13 pens
 Honestly I think it’s down to the style of play. In Mourinhos seasons we had Mata, Lingard, Mhikitayran in and around the box; players who like it to feet and do pretty one-twos. Not many direct runners into the box

This season bar one pen all of ours have been stonewall. This is due to the extremely direct nature of James (who’s won a majority of them - was getting kicked everywhere first half of the season) Bruno and Rashford. Much more attacking thrust has also let to this stat.

Back to Martial - that quote above details everything right about the man-management skills of Ole. He knew that Martial was hurt about his #9 shirt. He gave it back to him and also laid down a challenge for him to back up the number.

Like a poster just said, having a former striker who scored over a 100 goals for Manchester United is only a good thing for our attackers and Martial especially looks a force of nature and this was pre lockdown tbh. His performance against Chelsea, Watford and especially Man City was superb.

Remember this?

It really happens to EVERYONE, people.

Surely, judging on form alone, he's got to be one of the world's best strikers at this moment in time?

Yeah, there are few more.

Every player miss chances, if our defense did proper job, we wouldn't have dropped points.

Both he and Rashford have done really well.
If anything that tells you Martial is not selfish enough, he’s not taking enough shots for his talent.
