I actually agreed with what Souness said after the game, for once. If Martial had the same enthusiasm for the game as the likes of Rashford, or showed this enthusiasm if he does have it, then he'd be a different animal.

He'd be the best player in the world. His talent lies far beyond speed which is a big portion of Mbappe and Rashfords game.

I love Rashford more than Martial, but Tony has the capacity to make the hardest jobs in football look incredibly easy and effortless.

I'm gonna talk shite about him again before the next match so He scores another hattrick.
Lazy player, will never be like Henry in million years.
Jermain Defoe wannabe. :wenger:

Typical that Souness couldn't resist having a pop at his demeanour even after a hattrick

And to think Jose tried to sell him...
Rumors but potentially true and in that alternate universe :wenger: :

Anthony Martial to Inter Milan
Marcus Rashford to Barcelona

Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan
Willian from Chelsea.

Fellaini and Lingard still in midfield running their guts off instead of Bruno and Pogba.

We need to act on Pogba fast.

Ole deserves a lot of credit for Martial's improvement. Great to see Tony performing like this.

As other have said, for all the criticism Woodward gets, he pretty much point blank refused to sell Martial when Jose asked.

spot on

For a guy that can appear sullen a lot of the time, I loved that shot of him sat on the bench unable to keep the grin off his face. That hat-trick really mattered to him.

Ole deserves alot of credit but the Martial out and Ole out will not accept this.

Ole has said it from the start, he wants Martial in the box, he started to get those goals prior to lockdown. In his interview he said "the manager will be happy", which clearly shows Ole is a big factor in Martial's development. All this about Ole not being able to coach players.

I have criticised Woodward alot over the past 2 years, but he deserves credit because when he was asked to sell Martial for Perisic or Willian, he did not and stuck by him. When Ole asked to sell Lukaku, he did. So clearly, there is some kind of plan at Manchester United.

The thing about Martial as a striker is that he is a typical Tola-Vologe striker, meaning someone formed at Lyon pre 2016, Pléa, Benzema, Martial or Lacazette. Due to the way Lyon used to play their strikers are able to do everything, they are not traditional 9s but will provide you goals and creativity, the fact that so many people have failed and still fail to understand that there is more than one type of striker baffles me, the fact that Mourinho a former world class manager couldn't see it is shocking but fortunately Ole isn't an idiot, he knows a striker when he sees one.

With like 90% of the season only having Rashford on his wave length.

Some actually think he's been inconsistent this season. Considering the dross he's been surrounded by for the majority of it, he's had a very promising one.

He only had a few bad games, mainly when rashford got injured. But his form picked up again when bruno came in.

I think the blindspot some posters have with martial is that they expect a different type of number 9, the old school big center forward who dominates center backs. That is not martial's game. He is most effective in quick passing teams where he can bring other players into play and he gets away from his defender

Top notch performance, none of those finishes were easy but he made them seem effortless.

Seems funny how we question his ability to be in the team when he could potentially hit 30 goals this season on current form, with FA Cup and Europa League still to come.

If Rashford and Martial hit nearly 50 goals between them this season then that will be a fantastic return.

Funny how after the Rashford's miss, in the matchday thread there were like 2 or 3 posts actually blaming Rashford himself for the miss while the following 20 or so posts were blaming Martial for not shooting or giving a bad pass(wasn't a bad pass but a good one for a simple tap in). Just goes to show you the Caf agenda at times

With this Hattrick he's bought himself some time from being described every single lazy negative cliche thrown around before he misplaces a pass in the next game. At least for now the thread should mostly be free from the usual suspects

I didn't read the match day thread, while I wouldn't use the word blame myself, but I sometimes feel martial can be a little more selfish. But he is what he is, it's his nature to want his fellow strikers to do well too so it's a good trait.

Ah there you go. Explained much better than me.

Huge emphasis on this. The man is past-it, stuck with an old school way of playing football and judging footballers.

I don't think Jose is an idiot. He knew Martial had ability but wasn't prepared to nurture it. He wanted Martial to adapt to his style, instead of adapting the team to Martial.

Ole came in and has built a team around Rashford and Martial straight from the start e.g. Lukaku being pushed out to the wing.

The weird obsession of signing big tall box striker in modern football from certain section is so weird. We didn't have one when we won 5 league titles in 7 years and went to three CL finals nor did we needed one. Football can be played differently? Klopp and Guardiola are dominating league without having one.

That's where you are mistaken. The man keeps making the same mistakes since 2013 and he has failed to adapt, despite being given golden opportunities, if he didn't had his pre 2013 career everyone would consider that he is an idiot. And what Ole did is why he isn't an idiot, he may have other shortcomings but from what I see, he is at least able to recognize a good player.

I disagree. What differentiates Martial from Rashford is not enthusiasm but demeanour. Martial is a willing worker. His game against city before the break is a great example. He worked his socks off for the team and played with real intensity.

This season we're have also seen him score critical goals that speaks more about his desire than skills. Such as in the Europa league when he dispossessed the defender and went through on goal, the header against Chelsea etc. Martial has desire just like Rashford. He just doesn't display it in the same manner.

I'm not convinced he was a Van Gaal signing (as in he was on one of his weird lists) but ok

I'm pretty sure that he was because we specifically waited for him. United contacted Monaco early and got rejected like several other clubs, notably Chelsea and Barcelona, but United waited to see if Monaco qualified for the CL and tried their chances again.

As for people talking about Martial being pushed wide, it's because Memphis failed and we had a good player able to play upfront in Rooney. So LVG put Martial on the left where he outperformed Memphis. From the start LVG said that Martial was a striker and used him that way until the Memphis experience had to stop.

He can be a great player. He certainly have the talent needed, if he does what he does well consistently he will reach the very top of the game. What a game he had yesterday! 10/10 performance. Only downside is that he didn’t get the fans’ appreciation when he went off.

What makes you and Souness think he doesn't have enthusiasm for the game?

His finishing has always been good, but the timing of his runs in this game were exquisite.

The run he made for when he squared it to Rashford, the 3rd goal where he passed wide then bent his run around and kept onside... just perfect.

Ole should be showing him this match and saying this is the benchmark from now. He's proved he can do it so it's just about getting these types of performances regularly.

It's fair to say the work Ole has done with him is fantastic, and Martial himself referenced it in his interview.
And to think Jose wanted to sell him and get Willian! The thought alone makes my chest feel tight.

 People weren’t averse to the deal, either.

Or a swap for Alderweireld.
Don't forget Ivan fecking Perisic! thank god the board didn't give into his demands.

Since we got Ighalo I am more than pleased to have Martial as our main number 9. We needed a hold up striker and Ighalo offers that. Martial is a very good finisher and has been since day one and Ole seems to have worked wonders with him. Goal 1+2 were these types of goals that Ole has been going on about Martial adding to his game. Long may it continue and great to see how happy he was after the match.

Haven't been so happy to see a player score a hatrick since Kagawa in 2013

What makes you and Souness think he doesn't have enthusiasm for the game?
He doesn't smile like a mad man consistently, nor does he run around like a headless chicken. Those things show enthusiasm for game. They are far more important than having actual ability.
