For a couple minutes (before Lingard came on) Marcus was on the right while Tony was on the left. Maybe he's considering it. I'm pretty sure they both started against City in one of the games last season actually.

Think Rashford can do well on the right. Whips in good crosss. Combined well with Pogba to get to the byline once. Think Martial's strengths are more suited to the left and less interchangeable than Rashford's.

Would love both to start with Rash on the right as I think he can play there. Anyway, we've got options which is great!

I agree with you both. As much as I love Mata, Lukaku with Martial, Rashford and Mhiki could be hell for opposition defenders, especially on the counter. Rashford had some pretty good performances on the right last season IIRC so I'm confident he'd be fine there.

That was a mature display from Martial, I'm so glad we have two fantastic options on the left in him and Rashford :)

Good game, tried to work in tandem with Blind and used the ball well in the final 3rd, picking out a good option most times.

His ability to stretch the opposition with his pace is so valuable, every time he had the ball at his feet he had 3 Leicester players around him. No other player for us attracts that much defensive attention..

Stats were the only thing missing for him today. Attacked well with the ball, good vision to find some good passes and worked hard with and without the ball. Doing exactly what Mourinho would want from him. Would like to see him & Rashford start on either wing and switch throughout the game. Will keep even the best FB's on their toes.

He was very good, and another day could have an assist or two.

Good performance today -- very direct and looked to be one of the best players on the pitch. Should have had several assists.

Just came in here to ask how he did as I missed the game. These are great to see. Cheers lads

Yes. His amazing vision is on display right now every time he is dropping deep, picking up the ball and the losing it via either dribbling a bit too much or picking the most obvious of passes that defenders are cutting out. You accused of forming my opinions based off of highlights and then suggest me to go watch Martial's highlights as a means to justify your claim? Do you have braincells?! Do you type a statement and then forget what you just typed?

To say that Martial has the same vision and passing abilities in itself is a proof that my right knee probably has more footballing knowledge than your brain. I sure do feel like an expert now. Thanks a ton.

Edit: and our most talented player is Paul Pogba.

All our forward players lost the ball at times today attempting passes, all creative players take risks and will lose the ball occasionally thats football. Martial played well today and was dangerous and creative all game, thats why he was the last to be subbed.

You need to improve your comprehension and grammaskills, it seems you don't know that the same object can be used in two sentences that mean different things. You said all Martial assists are cutbacks. I then pointed to the most basic form of evidence to disprove that claim: highlights. I implied that full matches are the way you should learn about Martial even though disproving your claim could be done with highlights, showing how basic and nonsensical a notion it was. In short, highlights will not help you to form analysis on a player, but they can be used to disprove basic bs like I did. I hope that's not too hard to understand. Admit your claim on Martial was wrong instead of hurling childish insults like a teen backed into a corner, its really embarrassing.

Do you not understand what the sentence, "one of our most talented players" mean? Christ, your comprehension is really terrible. It looks like I'm wasting my time, if you couldn't get that there's no hope in you getting the rest of what I said above or in my previous posts. It all makes sense now, there's no point in a conversation with you, it would be like talking to a toddler. No thanks, I'm done with you.

I think it is great having Rashford and Martial dueling for that spot, both are great imo.

Played well, but so did Rashford

I have no idea who starts against Stoke now

Drop mata and play both.
I think Mourinho is very set on using Mata and Mkhitaryan because they're the most creative players we have, since we struggled a lot against defensive teams last season

But yeah, would love to see Rash and Martial together sometime

played well.
his big strength is running at defenders which he did today...scares the shit out of them...

I reckon Martial gets another go and then we'll see after that. Maybe back to Rashford for a couple of games. They will both get plenty of games, it's not that bothering. If they can keep a friendly competition that keeps both of them on their toes it's for the team's benefit. And their personal benefit too.

Fully agree, think both of the could offer a real threat from the right side. Wonder if Jose will give it a go, or stick at playing no10's there.

Everytime Martial had the ball 2-3 was surrounded by 2-3 leicester players. An attacking or overlapping full back in our team and Martial will destroy the opposition full backs

I'd like Jose to test Mitchell and Martial combo on the left against Burton Albion.

I really want it to happen but i don't think Jose rates him much atm as he was played very little during our Pre season tour.

Didn't think he was as good as some in here seem to think and I'm a massive fan of his. Maybe it was tactical instructions but he seemed to be clogging what little space there was centrally and coming too deep to get on the ball.

Plenty of times today in slow build up Blind was positioned in front of him and much wider whilst Martial was in and around Pogba and Mkhis space.

I'll have to watch the highlights again and see if I was maybe over thinking it but I know at the time I was getting frustrated with it.

Thought he did very well, unlucky to not get an assist. Leicester were under clear instructions to double up on him. At times there were four players within a 5 yard radius of him.

Agree. Like him a lot but yesterday was not one of his better performances. Actually, for me, it was a very frustrating performance. It was not bad like last year but I was expecting him to be a little more quick, like how Rashford was when he came in. Had the feeling that he could have prevented the double team by being quicker.

Also felt that off the ball movement could have been better. Many time the only option in the left was Blind while Martial had drifted centrally. Don't know if that was the strategy, but I feel Martial could have done much better had he help his position to the left. He was also trying to make things happen centrally, and Blind was occupying the left area more than Martial. Looked strange. Was it planned? Did not look like a very effective strategy to me.

He drifted in central from the start of the match, trying to free up space down the side for Blind while trying to feed the ball to Lukaku. Not sure why anyone would question if it was planned or not, if it wasn't planned he would've been hauled off way earlier for not following the strategy. Often looking to play one twos in central to unbalance a very tight Leicester defence.

He had a fine enough match, with a bit of luck he could've had 2 assists.

That was definitely tactical. He mostly played as a playmaker in the middle rather than keeping width.

That was clearly instruction by Mourinho probably to get him more on the ball.

Agree. It was clearly tactical. I actually thought it worked well. Our fullbacks got the ball in acres of space but we're useless with it.
I remember is first movement in the match was to go all the way to the right.

Yes, it must have been planned, but Martial was playing great on the left in the earlier matches. Maybe it was done to stop Leicester's counter, but I felt that the moments Martial had on the left yesterday were his better ones. Still we won, so maybe it was important to play that way to help the team.

I can see that both rashford and martial are winger strikers rather than a regular winger. Esp martial is a bit concern because he tries the same thing over and over again.

Yeah I noted that as well.

I just wish yesterday our fullbacks had their crossing games because we had acres of spaces in the flanks but unfortunately both Valancia and Blind didn't deliver good crosses, especially Valancia who probably broke a few shinprotectors.

Yeah, nobody would be complaining if our fullbacks could cross.

Don't get me wrong I love Mata but surely having:

Lukaku
Martial Miki Rashford

Would be a great starting lineup? So strange how many managers insist on putting Mata out on the right...

You mean you seriously don't see the value of Mata in the team? Have you failed to notice his creativity?

Where did I say he wasn't creative?? My first line was because of his abilities and what he brings to the game, not his blogs.

I just feel having 2 fast wingers and Miki/Pogba/Matic more central with Lukaku ahead, would be better. If Miki is having a bit of a mare, playing Mata in that role would be great and would show even more of his creativity. Having Tony V as the focal point of our right wing means we lack killer instinct down that side, if opposition defences had to deal with Martial & Rashford on either side, I really think we'd be ever stronger than what we have been recently..

He had a good game. I wish he ran in behind defences more, rather than always wanting the ball to feet.

Where was the space to run into with Leicester constantly camped in their own box?

Our whole attacking set up on both wings is for the wide forwards to cut in and draw defenders to them, leaving the full back space to push up and cross. He was extremely disciplined in doing this and the instances he tried to run behind there were always 2-3 Leicester players trailing him immediately.

In the matchday thread as well there were people saying he keeps running into blind alley. It's like a completely different match they were watching.
