For once I agree with the whiners in this thread, he's done enough in pre season to earn at least a sub appearance in this game. If he does not rate him he might as well sell him and buy someone else instead of fielding Lingard ahead of him all the time

'In some moments I don’t understand a few things, but that doesn’t change my fantastic feeling about the Premier League. 'I’m very, very happy. If somebody tells me I’m going to make ten years at Chelsea, I would say yes. 'I’m happy to be a part of this new Chelsea, and hopefully I can stay for many years.
So. That's the same. Trigger happy Abramovich and United?

Just send him on loan. There's a pretty decent chance Mourinho will get sacked within the next 2 seasons, so he can learn his craft and come back to a manager who will use him.
This.

If Mourinho's not going to play him, United should loan him out and get money for the loan. A return to Monaco would be great, as would a Bundesliga club.

He should ask for a transfer in his best interest as a young player needs to play regular football.
I have seen nothing to suggest the managers opinion of him will change this season.
And before anyone comes in here to say is just the first game, they should remember that he had the least minutes per game ratio of our attacking players in preseason.
At this point is ridiculous the way he is been handled and the earlier he fecks off the better it is for his career.

Debruyne saw this and left in january of mourinhos first season. He is now the main creative force in Mancity while Oscar is somewhere in China doing God knows what with his career. This is to tell everyone that Joses judgmenet is not always spot on as some would have us believe.
Am going to just say it, Jose is very poor with young attacking players.

Was sure he would play today, I would always pick him above Lingard given recent form.

That left side is just constantly in Mou's bad books

Good post.

Would Fergie throw on Fellaini before Martial while trying to save a game?

He doesn't track back as often. This is the only thing Mourinho wants in a winger it seems.
Martial tracks back. In fact even more than Rashford and the latter get given more opportunities.

I'm a bit bewildered by his handling at this stage. Starts what, 1 game in pre season? Despite playing well in general.

I don't really see what Mourinho is trying to achieve anymore, i really don't. But i have accepted that Mourinho isn't going to get Martial playing to his full potential. He doesn't have the patience or the "arm round the shoulder approach".

We've all witnessed some mercurial talents come through at United over the years, we've seen how Fergie handled them, we know what is required. Mourinho just doesn't have it in him.

The bolded bit is what people in here don't get. It's not that he didn't play today. It's the continuation of the same situation from last season and observed again in the friendlies.

In the most important games of last season Mou chose Lingard or Rashford. He doesn't trust Martial. He is a squad player behind both Lingard and Rashford. His actions indicate that pretty clearly.

It is what it is. Might as well sign that Mourinho type left winger and sell Martial imo

This.

People are going to defend Mourinho decision all day long but this is the same guy who has tried to piss away talented youngsters before and opted workhorses over them when in truth other than himself, no one else would pick those players over talented ones.

There are simply no justifications for the likes of Lingard starting over Martial. Had this been happening somewhere else we would all have been laughing and rightly pointing at Jose's negativity like most people on here use to before he became our manager.

Mourinho is just up to his usual antics.

Loan him for a season so he can develop, high chance is Jose won't be here next season. No need to lose the talent simply like that.

Hmm.

The overreaction here looks crazy tbh.

It's better to avoid this thread from now on any time he doesn't play.

When Mourinho thinks it fit to play Martial, he will play. Simple really.
And nobody should question that? Might as well close this thread, then. Heck, let's just close the Man United forum.

Massive overreaction in here, we haven't played our first league game and people think he's better off elsewhere? It's a squad game, we have lots of football to play and he'll get plenty of games this season. It wouldn't surprise me if he started at the weekend.

I'm also of the mind to lone him. He can't afford to sit another year on the bench and further stall his development. It's a world cup year and should be eyeing a place in the NT which he's lost.

Even Deschamps has suggested that Martial should leave United if he want to improve, that's how bad he's been handled the past year.

Mou is being Mou, the guy simply won't change as evidenced by everything last season(still negative football, quick to publicly criticise his players, tendency to park the bus against any decent team, mostly cowardly tactics against goodles teams, mismanaging young talented players etc).

I'd advise Martial to simply go this season if he doesn't want to waste another season. Seems to me no matter what he does he'll always get the short end with Mourinho.

He's better off for his own development probably. He can be a world class player and is sitting on the bench while fecking jesse lingard starts a final ahead of him - despite Martial having a very good pre season. And then doesnt get subbed on despite us needing a goal.

Posts like these are kind of stupid and only further prove that some of you would go to any length to defend anything Mourinho does.

You think something that has been going on for over a season is overreaction? Martial being mismanaged is something that started with this game?

The lad has seen unfair treatment starting last year and it's looking to continue. People point this out and you claim it's overreacting?

Some of you need to stop with the pretence. We all know what's happening.

Aren't we supposed to create a thread to talk about that?

Come one people. For once let's just call a spade, a spade.

This isn't overreacting, this is simply stating the obvious. You mean to tell me you haven't realised that Mourinho doesn't fancy Martial and he'd struggle to game game times in important games with Mourinho in charge?

I know people should be a lot smarter than they let on here sometimes. It's not rocket science, just Mou being Mou.

I think the over the top reaction is justified. What none of us wants to see is Martial leave, but the trend nowadays is young players leaving if they don't feel they're getting enough game time.

This has a terrible effect on the future. We had to pay a record fee to get Pogba back, Chelsea were about to spend a huge sum for Lukaku, Barcelona would be in a better shape if they kept Thiago and there are other examples.

I hope I'm wrong, but I see Martial having the sane season as last abd leaving. What will happen is someone will tweet or write an article about how he has a bad attitude or didn't want to be here and that will be taken as gospel abd used anytime someone questions why we threw away a talented player

Ridiculous management by jose. I am a big jose fan but even I cannot defend this crap. The game was calling for him and jose had a sub to make and yet he chose to ignore because he was jerking off seeing fellaini in action.

I don't want this to make a fellaini bashing thread, the guy played decent today, but it pains to see half talented guys like lingard, fellaini getting selected ahead of mata and martial. It's like zidane.selectinf vasquez ahead of.modric because Vasquez shows more passion. Jeez.

Look forward to Duncan Castles defense when Martial turns world class at another club.

You're imagining things of your mind and write a post about it, not just that but calls the other posts stupid. Impressive and I hope you'll be happy when I call your post stupid too and talking about things not mentioned in my post at all.

This is the first match of the season. We have about 55-60 matches remaining in the season but people here are talking about him should be getting loaned now till Jose's sacked then he can come back and the season is all over for him because he didn't play in the first match of the season. Seriously ? Mata also wasn't played today and we didn't hear any moaning about him being treated unfairly and he should leave because Jose hates him. This is what I call real stupid thinking, not my post.

We're starting a season. Take a grip.

The difference is, we really could've used Martial's strengths in this game, the same can't be said for Mata. So it's puzzling to not see Martial enter the game. It's even more puzzling to see Lingard start the game, as much as I like him.

I don't disagree that starting Lingard was a mistake from every possible aspect, but what I'm saying is posts about him should be loaned till Jose's sacked and writing off the whole season for him because he didn't play today is overreaction in its finest.

Obviously, yes, but after last season, it's not unusual to see these overreactions. After being trusted early on, Martial was never able to become a regular starter again after that, no matter how well he played. He's had a good preseason, did well in our preseason game against Real and today's game was screaming for a player like him because we couldn't beat anybody down the flanks. Yet, he still didn't come in and some are already seeing a continuation of what happened for the most part of last season.

I'll wait and see, but the Martial-Lingard situation could end Jose's spell here in the long-term. If it does, I'd rather still have Martial at the club though and not have him become disgruntled.

I agree though, we should wait and see and not overreact right now.

I´d understand the reaction if he had a brilliant pre-season but he basically showed the same he did all last season. Some moments of brilliance and poor overall performances, with poor passing and running into his defender too often loosing the ball.

I don't think it's that puzzling to see Lingard start. Mourinho's always going to lean more conservative with his team selection for a matchup like this. What would worry me is if Martial didn't start on Sunday at home vs West Ham. If he can't crack the starting squad in a game like that where they'll be throwing 10 behind the ball and countering with Chicha...then it'll be more apparent that Mourinho's trust in him hasn't changed since last season

I'm sure he'll get plenty of time and matches through the season. I'm not worried about his situation in the club.

Doesn't come on.....big deal. Martial is my biggest disappointment at the moment. The brilliance of the lad but when given the opportunity doesn't take it. He will have 'moments' but so does Lingard and whilst Tony's ceiling might be higher, that rarely translates consistently when asked.

Is that Martial, Rashford or Mkhitaryan that you're describing? Could apply to any. Except only one of them doesn't get a sniff of playing time and he happens to be the one with the greatest potential.

It's a joke how much we need this guy on form for us going into the new season. The way we'll be setting up with 3 centre midfielders means we need pure pace and clinical end product on our wings for the counter attack. At the moment I don't trust the likes of Rashford and Mkhitaryan to be our starters on the wings because they have the ability of being really wasteful. I know Martial has the same tendency but at least he's had one consistent season for us already, which means theres a good chance he can repeat it given the right management.

We should be setting up with our best possible side against the big teams, and we're playing Lingard just because he can track back, a completely unnecessary sacrifice when we're playing with a CDM and someone like Darmian who stays back and is solid defensively. Mourinho's record for us against the top opponents is dreadful, and this negative approach is the reason why.

You've got to play consistently to produce consistently.

You don't think he's taken his chances this pre season? With only one start I'd say he's done enough predominantly coming from the bench.

I don´t think any of them had a good pre-season and can be seen as a reliable and consistent option next season. That´s why i´ve wanted us to get a good wide-player in even before last season, but it seems like it won´t happen this year either and we have to hope one of our offensive options steps up big time next season (which i doubt will happen).
