The notion that just because Martial is a talented player needs special treatment is something I don't get. There are players who are more proven and experienced a la Mata who's put in great performances for us throughout the season who's benched constantly and Martial's had the frontseat to watch Mkhi's treatment to see how he's proven himself to Jose. He just needs to put his head down and work harder.

Just because we as fans are afraid that a worldclass talent might leave us due to this treatment is no reason to question Mourinho when he's made it work before.

Mikhi hasn't proved himself yet. He hasn't played well enough for a long enough period of time to be anywhere close to proving himself.

And there's plenty of reason to question Mourinho based on previous history with other talents.

I disagree with this. He had a couple of good performances, likewise he had some shockers, like Liverpool game. Basically just inconsistent.

He didn't have a shocker against Liverpool. Nowhere near. He's been better than any of the other options for his position.

Mou said himself his attitude is not in question at all. One assumes he just doesn't like what he's seen (so far).

I think the LB situation doesn't help. First need to get Shaw/Blind at LB. I think we'd see a lot more productively in Martial's play if this change was made.

Mourinho said:
"Martial has to listen to me and not his agent. He has to listen to me in training every day and in every feedback I give to try and improve him."

"With Martial every day I read the newspaper, 'Anthony Martial goes to Sevilla, Anthony Martial goes on loan, Anthony Martial is not happy'. Anthony Martial has to listen to me."

It can't be a work rate question - Ibra strolls around most games. Today would have been an ideal game for either Rashford or Martial to start up top and the other on the wing and have pace to hit them on the counter but for whatever reason Mou won't do that. Very frustrating not to even have him on the bench.

I don't think people who say stuff like 'well if he is not up for it he can leave' really thought this through. You make some allowances for players whose profile is unique and who can be invaluable in the long run. At least you try more than one approach.

you make allowances for players like ibra and maybe the likes of DDG and pogba. Not martial rashford and all.

Ibra leads the line. And he comes deep quite a bit.

It is time for Martial to leave. And show the sceptical "vee shud alvvayys beck dee manashur and beeleef he is ruyt" what Mourinho has hounded off by coming back with a superclub in the cl in just two years time and shhht the portuguese bully with his boring dinosaur player management techniques when he destroys us.

Don't appreciate his talent? Four or fve top clubs will want him and he won't even look back.

Or he could be another Anelka.

He started OK but completely disappeared. Against an 18 year old who was (I think) making his debut, at home ... that's not good enough. That's a shocker in my book, I wasn't remotely surprised he was taken off.

There is no obsession at all. Just concerns that young players might be handled well by the manager, that's all.

Age has very little to do with it for me. I'd be frustrated even if he was 27-29. The problem for me is that he was, in my eyes at least, far and away our best outfield player last year. People keep mentioning his potential as if we didn't see it in full display for essentially an entire season. Factoring age into it makes it even more bizarre, but it's not the central point.

I thought this was a non story before but I really am concerned now.

Mourinho's past clearly shows he's not got the first clue on how to handle youngsters that need to be developed.

If he fecks up this Martial situation I think he'll lose a large set of fans.

I don't think so. Most of the fanbase wanted him to replace Sir Alex. Fan base will forget the sale of Martial (if it happens) when Griezmann comes.

How can Lingard play like that and Martial can't get a game. Laughable. Needs to be back in the side. We got through but that performance vs Hull was pathetic.

Liverpool's whole set up was to protect the full back. They closed that side down completely. We played almost everything down the right. If we don't play the ball his way what's he supposed to do?

So who deserves to be in the squad for the weekend based on tonight's performance? They should all be dropped for a few weeks surely?

I think it will represent something much bigger than Martial alone. Sir Matt Busby and SAF built this club using young players. If we can get rid of Martial, there's no reason why over the next few years he won't get rid of Shaw, Rashford, TFM and future academy prospects. Should he continue in that vein as he pretty much did at Chelsea, I would be surprised to see some fans not turn on him.

In saying that, all of this is hypothetical. I'm just getting more concerned now.

Lots of opportunistic posts after this performance tonight. Sad!

If/when he gets us winning trophies again no one is going to turn on him. Like it or not, but that is the single factor that matters.

I'd get rid of Mourinho before Martial to be honest. Plenty of young good managers out there to motivate and whip this team into shape.

... and they keep coming. Jesus.

Good night, lads!
I am sorry for having a greater attachment to a player who was 19 years old and carried our team for a whole season in his first season than a manager who I admittedly admire greatly but hasn't ultimately performed as well as he could have this season.

It's as if any opinion that doesn't agree with the 'bigger' posters on here is outrageous or silly.

For people that are saying if he doesn't have the right attitude and that he's not mentally tough to be part of UTD i got one question.

Would you mind us selling him to our direct rivals in EPL?

I'd get rid of you as a fan in that case. Laughable post that.

Does your blind following of our manager's decision without question even tho he has a poor track record with managing talented youth somehow makes you a better fan of UTD than that poster you're mocking?

Strange how people would rather keep a player over a manager, given the struggles of the last years post Fergie.

He is easily our most talented attacker. Can't understand what's going on. He had a good spell over the new year.

People were spitting their dummies out when Mkhitaryan was absent week after week without explanation, then he comes back in, rips it up, and suddenly Jose has handled him fantastically, now Martial has vanished and people are crying, could we not just have a bit of trust that Jose might actually know what he is doing here.

Agree with this. I love Jose and think he is doing a good job on the whole but this whole Martial thing is strange. Much like Mkhitaryan earlier in the season but this seems different. His comments about Martial not taking chances while Lingard hasn't had a good game in 5 months are a joke.

As somebody else said a few pages back, it's absolutely obvious what Mourinho is trying to do here.

He might be playing better than Lingard, but Lingard is trying his hardest and that's the difference. Martial needs to learn how to be a professional and keep his head down. He's been thoroughly disappointing this season when you know what he is capable of, and his attitude is obviously the issue.

He's my favorite player at United because of his talent, but I'm hoping the penny drops with him soon. It's unsustainable to pander to him If he sulks because he doesn't play. Thats the sort of attitude that will come back and bite us in the backside further down the line if we let him get away with it.

Attitude and application. I have no doubt Lingard asks how how when Jose says jump.

Yeah, though I disagree with the handling of Martial (he has been trying his hardest of late despite what some are saying), I wouldn't want to see the sacking of Mourinho because of it when we're overall much improved as a team from the last few seasons. I'd be gutted if Martial was sold but you can't force a manager to play someone they're not keen on. Mourinho has an image of what he wants the team to look like and transfers to fill certain positions (repeated links to Griezmann suggests he'll fill that position) and he should be supported.
