The exhaustion excuse is quite obviously nonsense. Martial didn't really overplay last year, the amount of games he played last year isn't anything otherworldly for a 19-20 years old or anything. He just lost some confidence in the Euro(due to Deshamp managing him poorly) and it has stretched up to this season.

Hopefully with his goal last game, he's started regaining confidence and ready to get on with his business like last year. The way Martial plays and what made him a beloved player to us requires him(the player) to be confident. He usually takes on his man and beat them with tricks(quick feet) or pace but without confidence he hesitate and isn't willing to take on his man which make it seem as if he isn't much into games lately.

Add to that with his passing being a bit erratic lately due to being not quite as sharp and we have the Martial of the past 3 weeks. The most important thing is for him to gain his confidence back in order to finally once again see him take on his man, and it'll also help get him sharp.
So why is he featuring in an international friendly? That was my point, Deschamps complains about fatigue but then adds more minutes to his season.

Personally I think a footballer of any age should be playing at least one full game a week. One game a week for 13 months would be 56 apps. His 59 starts is about right.
Unless I read it wrong, isn't Deschamps saying he arrived at the Euros tired not this weeks friendlies. And actually goes on to say that now he is fit and fresh he is a problem for any opposition.

Yes, this is correct.

I went off another posters summary of Deschamps comments. So you're probably right.

Anthony Martial has admitted that his Euro 2016 was 'disastrous' as he struggled to make an impression in France's run to the final.

The Manchester United striker played just 68 minutes during the tournament as he failed to transfer his red hot club form to the international stage.

But the 20-year-old has pledged to learn from the experience and play better for his country in future.

'It was a very difficult Euros, we didn't manage to win the title and the coach only played me for 45 minutes - it was pretty disastrous,' Martial told French TV station Telefoot.

'After that I spent it on the bench, but that happens. I am young, I am going to learn from that.

'It was the first time I had played so much for my club but that is not an excuse. I should have been better.'

Martial marked his debut for United with 17 goals in all competition and France coach Didier Deschamps was confident he could make an impression.

But he played just 13 minutes of the opening group match against Romania, before being withdrawn for Paul Pogba at half-time in the second game with Albania.

Martial then sat on the bench for the matches against Switzerland, the Republic of Ireland, Iceland and Germany.

And in the final with Portugal, he was thrown on for Moussa Sissoko with 10 minutes of extra time remaining, moments after Eder had scored the winner.

But Martial recovered from the disappointment by scoring in France's 3-1 win over Italy in Bari in a friendly match on Thursday.

France begin their World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign away to Belarus on Tuesday.

He's made of the right stuff. No bullshit. Just acknowledging he should have been better.

Amazing, someone in our squad who actually benefited from the shitty international break.

The curious case of Anthony Martial. There's something definately wrong mentally with him at the moment. Probably just needs a goal to kick start things. Lets hope its against city because he's immensely talented.

Man Utd striker Anthony Martial calls Euro 2016 "disastrous"

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has admitted his Euro 2016 campaign with France was “disastrous”.

The 20-year-old started only one game in the tournament, a 2-0 win over Albania, but was hauled off at half-time to be replaced by Paul Pogba after a lacklustre display.

Martial was an unused substitute in France's next four games against Switzerland, Republic of Ireland, Iceland and Germany before being introduced in the 110th minute of the hosts' 1-0 defeat to Portugal in the final.

He was unable to replicate the form which saw him establish himself as a cornerstone player at Old Trafford last season and Martial admits he was worn out after his first season in the Premier League.

"It was a very difficult Euros, disastrous - we didn't manage to win the title and I spent it on the bench," Martial told French TV. "It happens, I am young. I am going to learn from that.

"It was the first time I had played so much for my club but that is not an excuse. I should have been better."

France manager Didier Deschamps admitted earlier this week Martial's form at Euro 2016 was not what he was hoping for but said it is natural for a player so young to go through ups and downs.

"He was the first one who was not satisfied. I spoke with Anthony about this Euros," Deschamps said.

"He arrived there exhausted because he had a very long season. He's a young player; he has to go through moments like that.

"He was expecting more from the Euros and me too. But, the things were more difficult. He has to learn from this to progress."

Deschamps restored Martial to the starting line-up for the 3-1 friendly victory over Italy in Bari on Thursday and was rewarded when he opened the scoring.

Martial clinically finished a fine through ball by United team-mate Pogba and admitted afterwards he was relieved to get his first goal of the season and his first in 13 caps for France.

"I had been waiting for that for 13 matches," Martial said.

Anyone watch the match tonight? Wasn't mentioned once on flashscores commentary and was replaced before the hour by Payet. His form is a concern.

Well he did score against Italy a few days back so there is a glimmer of hope at least. Easy to forget that he is still only 20.

He was alright, don't you worry.

Thought he looked like the only player that could make something happen. Had a good game the other night.

He looked more with it than he has done with Utd so far. Just didn't get the rub of the green in a few instances. Skinned his man a couple of times and put in a good ball that Giroud should have done better on.

Would be something if we could get Rashford and Martial both playing in the same line up, I remember them linking up really well at the latter part of last season. Think we'd be a real threat if we have two outlets apart from our fullbacks that are capable of dribbling at speed. Not all that convinced with Mata on the right, though it's only a matter of time till Mkhitaryan starts.

That was very encouraging. He had his man on toast several times. In, the tree PL games, he only has 3 take-ons. So his two international games have been a big improvement on that front.

I also think Mourinho has had a word. He's been brought off very early in the two games despite looking like one of France's best players.

Giroud should be banned from Football.

I thought he was decent. He certainly wouldn't have been who I would've subbed off.

He was very bright in the first half and France were looking likely to make things happen from that left side(then again everyone from Pogba, Griezman, Martial were boxing themselves into that left side). I was glad he had the confidence to take on players which he's been missing this season(he's still not quite as eager to take on his man as last season but seems like he's getting there).

Second half he started quietly and after 10 minutes Deschanp does his usual thing and took him off. I feel like he should have let him get himself back into the second half given his bright first half but Deschamp just loves taking Martial off. I mean Giroud should have come off first before anyone else into that France team.

Some coach usually have players they find easier to take off no matter the circumstances and Martial is the case with Deschamp.

By the way France either need to talk to Deschamp or find someone who will use all that talent available to the NT. The way France play is far beneath what the country is offering in terms of players. Pragmatism in one's approach is all well and good but with a team such as France, the talent is being wasted right now.

He just needs confidence back. He knows he isnt playing like he could be and I'm sure mourinho will handle him well. If that involves him rested for a few games, then thats good enough. Frankly I think the more he plays the better he will get

Me too. His confidence will not return on the bench and I think he's one of the key players that needs to play well, if we are to win trophies this season. On his day, he can rip anyone apart. Imo, we have to play him into form.

I think unfortunately for Martial they've got Payet who is in good form and Deschamp seems to really like him. Wouldn't mind seeing Martial as a 9 for them, but same again he seems to like a target man as a the 9.

Agree completely. He was at least going at his man last night, that shows some sort of confidence is coming back.

Deschamps just isnt good enough for this team. Maybe Blanc should take over. France have a generation of players that even Spain probably didn't have in the last 10 years. From back to front they have young talented players everywhere! If they dont win a major tournament in the next 5 years, then something would have gone horribly wrong.

Already did before him and wasn't really impressive at all and I completely disagree with your assessment of this France generation of players in comparison to Spain's. In every aspect of the game, Spain had better players (better defenders, full back, midfield isn't fair to compare and their attack was better with Villa and Torres before he turned into shit). France has very good talents but Deschamps is still a bit rigid with his decisions (Gignac should feck off already).

In comparison to any current team though, this France team is the most naturally talented. Martial, Pogba, Griezmann, Varane, Kante, Koscielny and Benzema backed with a solid GK in Lloris. That's a world-class spine

Blanc didnt have the talent thats there now and I think he is a bette rmanager now.

As for the Spain thing, maybe I went overboard but I think France have a lot more in terms of options. Spain had the top top quality.

The only problem for this team is the striker, the team plays and played well but Giroud is woeful. Next Month Lacazette should be fit and Benzema will comeback after the trial.

Pep mentioned him twice in his presser when he talked about our strengths. He mentioned Ibra, Mata, but the first one he mentioned is our French golden boy... "Martial is so fast" and "'Martial is so fast in the counterattack, good player".

He won't ever get him at City buy would love him for Barca if he ever returned.

Is Jose just resting him or has he been genuinely dropped? I'd much rather of seen him in the team today than not, even if he's not at his best at the moment. Scored for France too.
