Jose doesn't rate him ahead of lingard. What lingard does to get this priority is beyond me

He shows glimpses of his talent but nevers seems to go beyond those rare moments.

Also even in games where you can see he is sooo close to having some success! he still manages to go invisible for long periods.

If that was Lingard today he'd be rewarded with starting the next 5 games in a row. Martial is expected to perform miracles or its another 5 games on the bench.

Today showed why Mourinho prefers Lingard to Martial. Lingard played better in his 30 minutes than what Martial did the whole game. And the second goal? He should be crucified for that.

The team selection did him no favors. Lack of width and pace in attack made his life impossible.
Fully agreed. Him and Pogba could benefit so much more from guys like Grizou and B.Silva around them but manager will simply need more quality squad selection in the first place.

He was terrible today. He should have got the ball, ran past ten men and scored goals all by himself. Lazy idiot.

Martial play style is really uni-dimensional imo. The only thing he wants to want is to stick the ball to his leg and try to dribble past defenders. If it succeeds he appears if not he appears useless.

He can't even move behind defender for a player supposed to be pacey.
Martial's playstyle so far is very limited.

It's all hugging the left touchline, dribbles from the left wing area with close control usually and with pace sometimes, then if succeed, either shoot or low cross. Amazing when it works, but horrible when fail. He can't do it consistently enough. If space to dribble is too congested, pass back or to centre. There's also the very rare runs he make from the centre to the box during counter attack, combining passes with other players. Also, he love shielding the ball with his body, often too much times on feet.

Gradually, opposing teams realize this which imo is another factor why he's struggling this second season of his. He's certainly capable in doing a lot more than that. He could for sure shoot from distance like what he did with France, and his natural football qualities mean he could do more attacking patterns like utilising his scary pace totally with no dribbles to beat defenders. This is his second season and I'm expecting him to do more, at least improves much. Overall, disappointing season tbh.

:smirk:Oh well, still about 21 y.o., and at least he's improving albeit very slowly, like making more forward runs into space. Still not doing it enough for me though and not doing it with full commitment.

Great post.

I'll wait to see what he'll do in his next season and consider this as " second season syndrome " only. If he keeps with same thing next season I won't care if he leaves tbh.

When he had support for the first 30 mins he was good. When the whole team dropped back 20 yards he struggled. It's as if the two are linked.

Nicely put. Was completely isolated up front without any support. It was sad to watch, because here he is with one of the rare chances to play as a striker and show his worth, and he gets played in a 2nd string team with Rooney as a partner.

Did everything he could in these circumstances. Hope he gets another chance to play in a team with proper attacking intent. Today was a complete waste of time. Jose had given up on this match long ago.

I would REALLY love to see us play 4-4-2 again with Mata,Mkhi, Rashford, Martial, Pogba, Herrera against a lower team. Would be a beautiful team to behold.

Thank you! Good post.

Why do people defend Martial so much?

I get his heroics for last season and he should be given credit for that but he has been atrocious this season.

Glad you saw the build up to the second goal. His very lazy pass gave the ball away and Arsenal punished us.

He can't seem to dribble again. He loses the ball a lot (at a rate matched only by Mikhi) and he offers very little threat. Lingard showed more spirit (even though he was average) but you could see Rashford's class and threat the few times he had the ball.

I hope Martial can get his acts together next season otherwise, if he doesn't and we are relying on him as one of our main attacking threats, we might have a season as difficult as this.

He had no support playing in an extremely negative team. I won't judge him off this.

And playing in a negative team is why he gave the ball away for the second goal? Interesting.

Rashford certainly did not play like he was part of a negative team.

Too many excuses for Anthony.

The truth is that he is having a very poor season by his standards and it has nothing to do with playing in a negative team or not being played as center forward.

This is like beating a dead horse now. God forbids folks hear something somewhere, they'll run with it for God knows how long.

These criticisms about laziness and stationary this and that were never brought up last year, but someone mentioned it(probably some incompetent pundit)somewhere and the mass eat it up and it became their default argument.

He was good last season but poor this season by his standards. It's as simple as that for me.

It happens, players have bad seasons.

It might be good business to sell him this summer, before his value declines any further. Pereira can take his spot.

Now, if we could swap him plus cash for Mbappe, maybe good business for both clubs.

Thank you! Good post.

Why do people defend Martial so much?.

That poster spends his time defending Lingard in his thread so it's all relative.

Didn't see the game today but seems to be mixed reviews to Martials performance.

Is anyone else disappointed by Martial's dribbling? It seems like he bundles through players and things work out for him very occasionally, rather than actually "skill-ing" through the player.

I hope it's confidence related and not a reflection of his actual dribbling ability.

The hypocrisy. Why all the hate for Martial? Pathetic. If anyone said that about Lingard you would be labelling them all sorts.

I am. Very terrible in recent times.

Using Lingard to compare Martials performance is laughable. Lingard came on with Rashford. Martial had Rooney to help him for most of the match. Also, when Lingard came in we were chasing the match and actually trying to attack and Martial's play also improved.

If Lingard had come on and changed the game by scoring or something then it is understandable, but nothing like that happened. Why use Mctominay to compare with Rashford or Martial then, the guy got a shot on target after being on the pitch for only 10 min.

Many of us are criticising his performance, but I don't think anybody here has hatred toward a young promising player. That being said, it might be best for the player and also for MUFC for Martial to move on this summer, to a team that's better suited to his skills. I don't see Mourinho getting him to play his best, he is not a Mourinho player.

Very disappointing season from Martial.

Just don't think he's as good as I thought unfortunately.

Also still believe Mourinho does not fancy him.

No it was a dig at that other poster who accuses anyone who criticises Lingard of being a 'hater' or 'hating' him.

Some posters have already given up for him? This place never continues to surprise me.

Hopefully we will get to see the real Martial next year.

You still see his talent, but just in smaller bites than last year. I really hope he will bounce back.

:wenger:

What exactly United gains by selling talented young player to club that suits him? Incredible.

I'd suggest he has five games to save his United career. Too inconsistent for Mourinho. He's put in more of a shift in last few games but there has to be more from him.

As with every other player, he deserves criticism. I didn't see the game today but I caught about 5 minutes late in the first half and the commentators were actually praising him. But from reading on here, it appears he had a poor enough game but I can only imagine he was starved of service. Nothing new there.

He's been poor this season in contrast with last season but I also feel he's a victim of his own success from last season and is sometimes harshly judged. He's often been dropped after a poor performance whereas others get away with similar performances week-after-week.

Unless anyone believes his brilliant debut season was a fluke, why the actual feck would you want to get rid of him? If he was put up for sale, you'd be sure there would be plenty of interest as he's a very good talent. He certainly needs to improve next season but he's had a difficult second season, it happens.
