Can't believe people are saying he was still off today. Second half he was basically the same as he was last season. Looked a threat every time he got it, linked well with Ibra and ended with 2 assists. So what if they weren't some amazing assist? Do people think the likes of Ozil or Di maria rack up the assists by beautiful passes every time? Half of them are little plays like that always and him being that pace and cutting edge in the attack worked very well. He'll improve of course, but the second half was definitely a good performance every way you look at it. First half was off I'll accept, but he grew into the game and was a huge threat in the second.

People are cnuts mate.

It's like they're trying to create problems where there aren't any at all. Or being controversial for the sake of it
Yep. Martial was quite good the second half and he's probably lost the ball three times max all match. Not quite sure what people are expecting after a week of training.

Some fans here just can't wait to panic. Their day isn't complete without some time spent worrying about Madrid taking Martial away.

He played the most minutes out of any attacking player from United last season, in a system which burdened him (and Rashford tbf) the most to create. He played in the Euros, got benched for Gignac, and now is dealing with personal problems. Top it all off, he's 20. Not sure what people are expecting him to do.

Yeah, he used the ball really well generally. Cut inside when needed, passed back when needed to, drove at the defender a few times and linked with Ibra a few times. 2 assists, won the free kick that Ibra couldve scored from and was the main part of the move where Rooney dived for the pen (and got in martials way right before probably). Second half was very good without a doubt and exactly what you want from your winger in Mourinhos system.

I think there are two reasons people are (wrongfully) critical of his performances:

1) They are so used to him constantly having the ball last season that actually attacks in multiple ways, his impact doesn't appear to be as big.

2) Too often players, Ibrahimovic and Rooney in particular, didn't follow through on the 1-2s he was looking to play with them. He had great and bright ideas and attacked well, but we simply lack team chemistry or are too caught up in playing the safety first van Gaal way. It did show that if players think along his lines, as Ibrahimovic did a few times, he can create incredibly dangerous situations.

Overall, a very pleasing performance.

Yep. If Rooney especially was focused during the game and had a normal touch at the very least, we probably would've scored one or two more. Both Martial and Ibra tried to link up with him and plenty of times he just wasn't on the same page. For the first game of the season, in his second season, I was really happy overall with him.

I really didn't think he was great. But I also did say I'm sure he will be back to last season form soon

He improved in the second half and looked a threat every time he ran at them. He'll be fine.

As for his ex, what a (expletive). She tries to create the image of the anti-WAG yet here she is spilling the beans on her relationship with a footballer for money. She's no different from the Rooney hooker or the one who complained about Januzaj taking her to Nandos. She complains about being given "only" 3000 a month of tax free money to do nothing, which is more than most get working 40+ hours a week. Let's not forget her attention seeking social media activity. When the story about Martial being upset about his number being given away, she went and retweeted Zlatans post. Martial is the good guy in all of this and is acting more of an adult than this chick whose older than him.

To be fair he did have two "assists". At the end of the season no one will remember if these assists were intentional or not. Looked dangerous on couple occasions, but doesn't look sharp yet. If Rooney gets replaced with Pogba or Mhkitaryan, then I think he'll have a great season. Otherwise it will be tough on offense, not every team is going to gift us a goal to ease the pressure.

Still early in the season and I can see him becoming more influential. Last season he was double/triple marked by defenders as they knew he was out outlet but with Zlatan and Pogba in the eleven he is going to find relatively more space. Also the pressure will be less on him and more on Pogba to perform which will free him a bit. Not worried about his form. It is temporary. He is class.

He isn't completely in form yet, and I would've substituted him during half time. His passing failed, his shot(s) were way off, wasn't able to control a ball properly, and seemed a bit slow.

Luckily I'm not the coach since his second half was good. More speed in his game (that Rooney couldn't follow), his passing, and running lines were much better. Not the level we need from him, but enough to earn his starting position.

About the 2 assists. He had none. 1 was a failed shot, and the other was just a pass sideways that didn't really create an opportunity. All credit to Zlatan alone for that goal.

Martial is the one who banged other chicks, he's no-where near being the good guy. He has a child with this woman and obviously had a longer term relationship with her, you don't just go out and take another chick to Paris.
As for her going public, it was Martial who was stupid enough to parade the chick he took to Paris around the city and said chick actually talked in detail to the media about it.
The his retard of a brother felt the need to address his ex publicly instead of settling it privately.

As for his performance on the pitch: I'm surprised about all the negativity in here, he was average in the first half but hardly worthy of being substituted the way @MD7 suggested and he was bright in the second half.

And to think everyone was happy the boy married at a young age and was all settled down with his baby and all.

Knew it wouldn't last under these circumstances. Now it can only be a disruptive influence.

It's delusion, how does one twist it to make Martial the hero.

I agree, I thought he was decent yesterday. Definitely not worried.

Can we keep his personal life out of the performance threads

Looked sharp after half time but faded around the 60-70 mark, was his fault Bournemouth scored as he fell asleep when defending. Was rightly subbed as he looked quite tired.

Still though, an improvement from the Everton game.

I think he's worth playing into form. There's no point in constantly subbing him off if it's only going to knock his confidence. We know what he's capable of when he gets back to his best(unlike somebody like Rooney these days) so lets keep playing him.

He´s yet to find form under Mourinho and he looks a bit sulky and discontent. I've thought ever since Louis started fielding his unbalanced sides that we need players on either wing capable of beating a man and being an outlet (with pace). When we haven't got that, it's easier for our opponents to double up on the sole outlet we've got, which yesterday was Martial.

I really hope Jose finds a way to bring out the best in Martial and starts finding a more balanced side going forward. Let's be honest, our first goal was very fortunate, and we were too reliant on Valencia breaking through to cross. There wasn't a lot on offer from central areas.

And to think everyone was happy the boy married at a young age and was all settled down with his baby and all.

. Now it can only be a disruptive influence.

Turns out he wasn't even married to her in the first place though. He looked unfazed on the pitch when the news broke about him cheating back in January, after that he broke up with Samantha and by all accounts she moved back to France with the baby around February/March. Ever since then Martial has been linked to some soap actress, with his form on the pitch not really being a problem at all during the second half of last season.

So all in all I'm not worried too much about the disruptive influence. That recent interview by his ex Samantha just seem to be some chick clutching at her last straws for the attention and limelight she's never going to get again in the future, once she realises there is nothing to be gained from spouting shite and using the Manchester United brand name for her own agenda that'll be the end of it.

As for Martial's form yesterday, I thought he looked a bit tired the second half and I was very worried he was going to be kicked to shreds or get injured by reacting too late, but it seems the boy is so good he can dodge everything, and still be one of the best players on the pitch despite being only 70 or 80% fit.

surprised at the criticism of his performance, i thought his running second half in particular changed the game and played a big part in several chances being made.
other than that it was typical of the first game of the season that just about everyone else suffered with, ie touch a bit off at first and tired 3/4s through

he'll be a very big player for us this season

I don't buy the logic of giving him time off to deal with his personal woes. Surely if you're going through the shit he goes through you want there to be a distraction, not time to wallow over it. Play him out of this strut.

He needs more time down the middle. That run i nthe second half where he was clipped and fouled was an eye candy. We need people running at opponent CB's.

Totally agree, but some off colour performances in the euros and a fight with some girl he dumped is causing uproar among caf psychologists. Also remember new toys have been bought, we have a new golden boy (rasherzzzzzz, kmaarn boy)... fans are quick to throw away old toys in football, especially if their new one is English (Ronaldo being filed away by many as England's golden boy came in 10 years ago) and this one is even from our own academy.
There is an impatience brewing in here, the same way you could feel things were soon to get real during a time when we were still decent result-wise but the first unease was stirring and people grumbled but did not dare to post more than a few jibes at LvG yet instead of going for the jugular "LVG OUT!!". If he has one or two games that are REALLY bad (look at his last few appearences... barely trained, played ok-ish in the first two, had a very good second half in the first PL game, but supposedly he's been bad and off field trouble or LVG misuse have hit home. A number of posters have already predicted he will have a tough second season.
Similar to what @Sarni said in the mkhi thread, bizarrely people seem to be almost willing a player to follow their concoction of fantasy scenarios of SM doom, with very little evidence on hand. Just look at the insecure and depressing state of some people in the Pogba transfer thread whenever a shred of 'bad' or 'neutral' news came out, same shit. An SM bunch on here.

Anyway, this lad is the best talent we have and will soon destroy. But he might get cast away like a used condom soon for a period of time if he takes too long to find great form. Remember "Ronaldo OUT" after euro 2004.

He cheated she left him and she is now selling the story of what happened between the two of them for financial gain, he is not a hero but he has every right to feel aggrieved.

I'm not judging Martial, I'd be aggrieved in that situation. From the information we have though, there is nothing that suggests that Martial is the one good guy. The poster in question was attacking the ex while seemingly oblivious to Martial's deeds, due to his role at Manchester United.

He grew into the game yesterday, and 2 of the three goals came as a result of his direct running, he'll only get better as the seasons unfolds.

Yeah, hopefully he can build on that second half performance and improve even more as the game unfolds against Soton.

By September he will be alright, he just had his first big season and he is only 20.

They're both wrong... his ex and Martial. Both should just accept responsibility for the failure and move on. They have kids to worry about.

Feck this soap opera bs about his personal life.

He seemed a bit off in the first half and he sorted himself out in the second half. He has always had a little flaw in the way he dribbles the ball straight down the centre of a defender and if the defender steps up, he can always nick the ball off of him. He needs to dribble on either side of the defenders and then move in and out. With his control, he will beat the defender every single time.

He also has to improve his off the ball running. Sometimes he just needs to get on his bike and run without the ball and trust his teammates to find him. He usually stands there to receive the pass before starting his sprint.

I can't believe the world class coaches haven't yet fixed these little things for over a year now.

I'm not sure this post is melodramatic enough. Poor effort.

Looked fine to me. Was better in second half as was the whole team attacking part of the team. made some good runs to draw defenders and create space in the final 3rd. Looks like someone just shaking off the rust and Coming back to form

I don't get why everyone is being so defensive and calling other posters "cnuts" for saying he had an off day. I thought he was very average.
