Anthony Elanga | Forest watch

Lovely composure with his goal.

What on earth is kiddo on about? 27 games in 21/22 and 26 games last season. You would've had more minutes if you weren't so toothless. No point trying to rewrite history.

Had to double check that second figure as I genuinely don’t remember a single appearance.

Tells you all you need to know about his performances I suppose.

Honestly that’s pretty much all you’ll get from Elanga. He’s just not a very good footballer. Terrific athlete, and an absolute trier but lacking hugely in technical ability. He also falls over a lot. He’s a Championship level player. I hope he does well because he seems like a genuinely great lad but I think we’ve robbed you for £15 mil in all honesty.
Caf reallly is a ‘special’ place. So much bollocks spouted with such conviction

Absolutely, people become scared to challenge the status quo.
I have heard this "Elanga is a championship player" Nonsense for a while now. He's a solid young pro, and it's great to see him playing well and scoring

it is hard for a youngster coming in with sporadic appearances. He barely had minutes last year - that is hard.

I just think a lot of people don’t realise how hard it is to play for United and see anyone not good enough as a rubbish waste of time.
Delighted he has started so well for you.

He must have got very few mins across those 26 games.

He's right, you need time and the confidence of your manager. He just left out the bit about not being good enough as well.

Tbf there was no path forward for Elanga regardless considering who are in front of him.

He had 1500 minutes over 27 appearances in 21/22, and 718 minutes over another 27 appearances last year. I don't remember a single impressive thing from those, he had 6 G+A over both seasons.
Pellistri has played a lot less and probably has zero output but at least his strengths have been pretty obvious.

Garnacho had 1200 minutes over 34 appearances last year and provided some of the best moments of the season, 7 G+A in one season.

He needs to start games, week in-week-out to learn the ropes of the game. Just like Zaha who wasn’t given a real chance at United. Chuffed for Elanga and wishing him well.

Yeah he had plenty of chances to show whether he would work out here.

We can see a player do really well at a side that doesn't play against a low block every week and be chuffed for him without imagining he was the answer here when it was obvious he wasn't.

He had minutes, but his goals and assists dried up. When he first got the chance in the first team thats what stood out. He made point winning contributions. When those went away it was clear his future was going to be elsewhere. He's gone to Forest and he's started very well with a few goals and assists. So now he has another chance to push on as a really good young player and not have them dry up again

Very good debut for Forest. When younger players are sold some will thrive others won't. I think from what I'm hearing Gomes has also come into his own especially last season with Fonseca playing him deeper in the midfield.

I think the primary issue for some of these younger players is not that it's harder to.pkay for United but that aside ETH (jury still out) they haven't had their development come from good coaches.

He did well yesterday. Good composed finish and worked hard. His decision-making needs a lot of improvement though.

The consistent game time obviously helps.

Agreed, his problems are his passing and decision-making.

Watched the match fully yesterday. He was brilliant and atrocious at the same time. Forest could have easily had 2 more if not for some selfish and stupid decision making from him. Apart from that, he was very good. Made few good runs, beat defenders comfortably

I think that’s a bit harsh - he’s only 21 and been at Forest 5 minutes. Yes he should have crossed the ball, but the bit of skill to put himself in a position to shoot /cross was a joy to watch. He earned the right to have a go.

Post match, Elanga said that the staff had been working on his finishing with him and his instructions were to get forward and score. He’ll learn, he’s a bright lad.

He was absolutely crap every time I’ve seen him in United shirt in the last two years.

that of course doesn’t mean he can’t do well for relegation battler. Pereira is doing well at Fulham as well yet he was once again shite for United. It’s not something uncommon and to me Elanga found his level.

Right move to sell but unfortunately for the wrong price. Garner, Andrea's and Elanga are proving to be good bargains for their teams.

That level happens to be against the same teams that United play also!?!

There's a lot more space playing for the sides like Forest, Fulham and Everton

How so?
Generally speaking playing for a 'lesser' team in the Premiership would make it harder for an attacking player to stand out for me.

United play against far more low blocks than any of those teams will face all season. Except for the promoted sides (which is still unlikely) I'd wager they probably won't face a single side that puts 10 men behind the ball all game and just looks to counter. We face that anytime we play a team from the bottom 10

Hopefully the Ratcliffe/Mitchell/whoever era improves our PR and we can get more preferential figures for our youth players. Most of our youth players who get game time at senior level here would be great options for the lower half of the table.

How much did we sell Mengi for? He’s a first choice CB for Luton at the minute.

Tons more space for a relegation battling attacker to play into because all teams play higher up the pitch against them. Especially somebody with pace like Elanga.

Again, I reiterate my point that generally speaking

It's horses for courses though, generally speaking Forest won't have as much possession in dangerous areas as a top six club, likewise a player who uses pace to their advantage will generally be exposed and isolated at the 'lesser' clubs as they don't get forward as often as a stronger club.

Elanga has proved there's way more to his game then just speed so far this season,

The main proof is the huge number of players who can't hack it in a big club but look amazing in a lesser team. More space to run into, more space to play in, less pressure to perform. It's much easier to stand out in a place like Forest. Score 10 in a season and you'll be a star. Thats the bare minimum for a top 6 club.

Respectfully I completely disagree.

There's a awful lot of pressure on a team near the bottom of the table for example, likewise Forest would be under severe pressure on the back of a few bad results due to the tightness of the Premiership.

From what you are suggesting, it seems to me that players who play for the likes of Forest should relish playing as they are under minimal pressure and have the freedom of the park to play in.
And we both know that's not the case.

Find me a forward (in their prime) who performed better in a big team than they did in a small team. I can find you dozens who did the opposite, including the subject of this thread.

Callum Wilson, Anelka, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Darren Bent, Gareth Bale, James Maddison, Theo Walcott...etc

Sure you'll pick holes with that selection, but there's absolutely loads of players who have come from 'lesser' clubs only to shine at a big club.

It's even arguable to say that Elanga is merely performing to the level he first displayed at United when he got gametime in a functioning team, am sure you'll disagree with that also, but for me I don't think that's too far from the case.

Can I point out that Elanga has so far scored two goals in twelve league appearances for Forest. He'll have 6 by season's end at this rate, and that's assuming he plays every game and maintains this rate of scoring.

It's also not that playing for a team like Forest is without pressure, but that pressure is far less pronounced than it is at a team at the other end of the table.

Teams near the bottom of the table are expected to win, at most, about a dozen games over the course of the season, and they're never really expected to win those games by anything other than narrow margins. They're looking at probably losing about half of their games, and the top scorer will generally just about break double digits, with the team as a whole not scoring much more than 40 goals all season.

It's far easier to look good in those circumstances because anything not utterly shite will look good.

This is all before you factor in how differently teams like Palace and West Ham will set up against sides like Forest than how they'll set up against United.
