Seems a good lad for one so young.

You can see obvious flashes of Ronaldinho, Nani and Ronaldo in his game. Messi too.

You can tell that he's been influenced by these individuals growing up. Let's just hope that he continues to develop and takes to senior football better than some of our other young stars have.

The only thing I can see holding him back is his size, at first. But he will adapt with experience. A strong core and balance can counter that.

Do we think he'll get any game time next season, maybe a few cup games? Or are there others due a game before him?

Shouldn't he be playing for the Reserves already?

Can't recall he playing for the U23s last season, but I don't follow them that much.
He didn't but that doesn't mean he won't be promoted this season. The u18s were better last season and taken more seriously so the best players weren't really pushed up. There were also barely any u23 games in the second half of the season with only 6 after January. Angel was also injured for some of that time too. It wouldn't make much sense for him to play another full season with the u18s.

The duo are very highly regarded at Old Trafford, but with Dearnley still 18 and Gomes not turning 17 until the end of August, the decision has been taken to keep them with their younger teammates this summer ahead of their first season with the u23s in Premier League 2.

I think it's a given that Gomes will play most of his football in the U23s this season. Doesn't make sense to let someone who has made his first team debut play U18s football tbh.
Yeah, I know. But there are cases where they let the players drag themselves for years while they could well develop further ahead (for instance, Renato Sanches in Benfica's academy).

Personally I don't think Mourinho will allow it to happen as he's not a fan of playing a player in a level he considers "below them" and Gomes surely is one of the few youngsters that he will monitor closely. He didn't even allow TFM to play U23s football.

Was Sanches not playing in their B team right after turning 17 and in the first team at 18. How young did you want him to be?

Listen, even so, he was completely head and shoulders, both physically and tactically, from anyone else. And he spent too much time in the equivalent of the U18s before joining the B team which plays in the second tier.

I think the likes of Gomes and O'Connor will play a mix of u18s and u23s football this season rather than making the direct jump to the u23s. Both were excellent last season but are still only 16 and not particularly physically developed and the u23s have plenty of players in Gomes positions in particular with the likes of Whelan, Hamilton, Gribbin, Kehinde, Boonen, Dearnley and Bohui needing games and even McTominay, Redmond and Willock if they stick around.

Do you reckon he will get U23 game time this season?
Wouldn't make sense otherwise.
Yeah I'd say he'll probably play with both teams, will more than likely move up to the u23s more regularly after the u17 world cup

From what I've seen I still think long term O'Connor will have a better shot at the first team.

The 2017/18 season promises to be a big one for Manchester United Academy product Angel Gomes, who does not turn 17 until the end of August.

The teenager already has a first-team debut under his belt, with his late outing as a substitute against Crystal Palace in May making him the first player born since 2000 to appear in the Premier League.

It is a moment that Gomes still has to pinch himself about, being selected by Jose Mourinho to come on for Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford, in an exciting glimpse of the future for the 75,000 fans watching from the stands.

"That moment has been with me a long time," Angel told MUTV recently, at United's Reserves and Academy training camp in Obertraun, Austria.

"There are times when I am sat at home and I'll just be drifting away when I think of the game and how everything happened so quickly. It feels great to say that I am the club's youngest Premier League player."

Actually the youngest player in United's first team since the legendary Duncan Edwards in the 1950s, Gomes had a 2016/17 season to remember and rarely can anybody have had one campaign that was so diverse. The young midfielder also performed as a goalkeeper - when regular no.1 Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui
was injured, Gomes donned the gloves as the Reds won the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup - and as an Old Trafford ball-boy, along with team-mate Aidan Barlow, for the Emirates FA Cup tie against Wigan Athletic.

"Yes, I was in goal in the indoor tournament we won in Germany and I was a ball-boy as well, in the FA Cup," he confirmed. "To go from being a ball-boy to coming on for Wayne Rooney was amazing. What a player to come on for. Wayne Rooney is a club legend who I think will do amazing [things] at Everton. He helped me and spoke to me, when I was coming on, so it was nice."

London-born Gomes revealed some details about his background, including his relationship with former United winger Nani and laughed as he remembered trying to copy the Euro 2016 winner's acrobatic celebrations as child.

"I'm a Salford lad at heart," he said. "I love being from Salford. It's where I grew up so I always say that's where I'm from. My dad [Gil Gomes] played at the Under-23 World Cup and is well known in Portugal as they won it and he played with some great players as well. It's nice to be following in his footsteps really.

"Nani is my godfather. He's been amazing to me and gives me lots of advice. I am just lucky to have someone like that in my life. When I was younger, he used to be my idol. I used to watch him and even practice his backflips on the trampoline. I know I can't do that now!"

As captain of England at youth levels, Gomes's potential has been clear for some time but the 16-year-old's feet remain firmly on the ground. From his interview with MUTV, it's obvious he has been brought up the Manchester United way and this will stand him in good stead.

"I've been here a long time," he said. "I started at the Under-6s and progressed up really. I used to play down [an age group] because of my height and physicality obviously but I was lucky to kick on since the Under-13s and it's been amazing.

"I think people forget how young I am really. Of course, it would be a great experience to get a few more minutes in the first team under my belt at some point but I'll just try to kick on in the Under-18s and Under-23s and learn a lot of things.

"I hope to gain a lot of experience in the UEFA Youth League, for example, and the Reserves have a new coach in Ricky [Sbragia] so it'll be great to work under him too."

"Last season, we played some high quality football, but didn't end up doing the ultimate thing of winning trophies. We want to win more this season."

Over/Under on how many appearances Angel will make this season

1.5

Ill take the under as Ithink he will get the one solitary 85min sub appearance during a period where a lot of our 8s and 10s are injured

No chance of him getting 8 appearances. He hasn't even been pushed up to the u23s full time yet. I'd imagine he'll be lucky if to get a couple minutes if we have a dead rubber in the CL or at the end of the season.

Is it an age thing? I noticed Boonen seems to be in the U23s full time now and physically he looks pretty similar to Gomes, but he a year his senior.

I'm assuming maybe a bit. Boonen is an u19 though now so he had to move up. A few people have said we want to keep the u18 group largely together so won't promote them fast. Same as Lee O'Connor who is easily good enough. Not sure I agree with it as the u23s is hardly that physical although can get pretty dirty at times but still I'm a believer of promoting players fast. No point wasting more time in the u18s. It could also be an idea to keep a core together for the u19s youth league. Not entirely sure, but I hope to see him promoted soon as I think the u23s is lacking a few players.

I'd say we're probably waiting until after the u17 world cup to move him up

I don't really get why this fella keeps playing for the U18s, really. Are we that rich in the U23s?

As some of the others have said he is going to go away for the u17 World Cup soon and we're keeping the group largely together most likely to really go for the fa youth cup and uefa youth league. Buffonge hasn't been getting starts for the u23s yet anyway so Gomes isn't exactly needed right now.

That's understandable, although I hope he gets promoted in December-January, after the U17 World Cup and the Youth Champions League group stage. We should focus on his progress, not so much on the gel of the teams. Only a few will make it, those should be privileged. I suppose you consider Angel Gomes a worse player than Buffonge right now. I thought he was the great hope of the Academy.

I think that's what most expect. Angel and O'Connor to be promoted around January. I agree the team gel isn't as important in the grand scheme but also going far or winning these competitions will be a great experience and learning for players like Angel and Lee. I'm a believer of quick promotion for talented players too and it's been a big complaint of mine over the years as I don't think we do it enough or as much as other teams. I've personally said before that I'd have promoted the core of that u18 squad and keep them together in the u23s. Keep Angel playing with the likes of Boonen and Buffonge against tougher opposition.

No I think Angel is better I was more just saying in terms of numbers he isn't desperately needed to be promoted. Boonen and Buffonge are talented players as well who've just moved up and Buffonge ain't even getting to start games yet. I'd like to see them all promoted and playing together as Angel is too good for U18s for me. I'd have loaned out most of the older lads.

Problem is the U23s don't play enough games...kids this young need to play.
