Angel Gomes Watch

True but our 5ft9 CB needs a big CB next to him to compensate.

The same would be true with Gomes. Not to mention that in terms of build Martinez and Gomes aren't comparable really.
Kobbie is 6ft in fairness. CM also isn't particularly comparable to CB in terms of physical requirements.

I'm not sure he's 6ft but either way Kobbie isn't great off the ball. Not yet anyway. Neither is Gomes.

The No.6 would have to be a machine to balance that out.

It's not just about height. It's can they cover the ground, do it with some speed and strength, aggression, genuine desire to win the ball back.

They just don't strike me as a pair who off the ball blend well in that sense.

What am I missing with this lad?

He’s playing in an average league as an attacking midfielder. Has less than 10 goals and assists combined in two years and never did anything at our club in his cameos.

Why would we bring him back?

I thought he was playing as a no.8 and in some instances as a no.6?

He mainly plays as a CM or a DM. More assists than anyone else in the league despite his team finishing in fourth place and scoring 29 goals less than the champions PSG. One of England's key players in their U21s Euros win last summer.

Do you watch his games?

Yeah every now and then. The talent has always been there. If it wasn't for such a strong midfield selection he could be knocking on the full England squad door. I'd say he'll eventually get his debut.

Now whether he will become a regular for England is another discussion. I'm not 100% sure we should be going for him even though he's one of my favourite players following the academy. The problem with some of the suggestions I've seen here is that he would more or less exclusively rotate with Kobbie. Many are saying that them two couldn't/shouldn't play together.

I don't think that's ideal as with injuries etc. every single midfielder should be able to play with every single midfielder. I do agree that we'd be a bit light with them two together and that's part of the reason I'm not completely sold on the idea of signing him. Would love to see him back at the club some day though.

I think Kobbie is actually very good at reading the game and positioning but lacks a bit of physicality and endurance at this stage of his development. Gomes however, appears to be rather good off the ball but also lacking some height which means a partnership between them may not work in the near future but as Kobbie fills out I could see a double pivot with the pair of them working quite well, especially if we're keen on keeping the ball.

I genuinely have no idea about the lad. I’m not claiming I know anything, I’m also suspicious of anyone who has claimed to watch him play because… why would you watch a Lille match?

I don't watch Lille matches either but have kept tabs on him since he left us, as far as I'm aware, he usually plays in deep midfield. I believe the the head of our academy while Gomes was there said something about planning to play him as a DLP as well. By the sounds of it, he's developed very well since he left the club and if he only has a year left on his contract, it might be shrewd business to pick him up in the summer because we need more players who can look after the ball, the drop off in quality in that department after Mainoo is just staggering.

perfect. That’s all I was wondering. I like our ex academy lads. Never saw it with Gomes and surprised he’s spoken about as a future England player here as I’ve never really heard owt about him.

Smaller player in stature who could blossom a bit later. Seen it happen before.

How do you keep tabs on him if you don’t watch him play? Not having a go at you, just genuinely curious on how you’re able to judge quality on the ball? Articles or compilations perhaps?

His technical ability was always special, it's his physicality that was the big question mark. I'm not sure if he'll ever play for England, the talent is just ridiculous at the moment but he's become a good player by all accounts.

Reading reports mainly, especially since the U21s euros last year where he was widely praised. We've always known about his quality on the ball, I used to watch him in the youth teams and his few appearances at first team level and his technical ability was always special. Like I say above, it was all about how he translated those skills to the men's game given his weaknesses. If we could get him for 15 - 25 million, I think it would be a very good bit of business and would give us nice depth in midfield.

It would be good to have a Mainoo back up in case of injury or to rest him throughout the season.

I don't have an issue about Gomes or what his perceived quality is, just the original remark that he's undoubtedly better than Mainoo on a technical level.

The compilation video above is quite impressive though as there is a wide variety of progressive ball playing with short, long passing and through balls.

Just wonder if he's able to do that in the PL where space is tighter and obviously much more physical.

Quite impressed by the route he has taken. Do think another year at Lille would do him good.

He would be on his last year of a contract. So either right now is the best time to sell for Lille (if he's planning on going), or he leaves on a free next summer. So if United were to be in on him, they have to really be in tune with what he's planning on doing or it could become more expensive for United.

He would be cheap right now. Maybe he gets a new contract, and he becomes more expensive.

Gomes is probably best viewed through a lens without prejudice. Because his short and slight people believe that his poor in contact in games or is reluctant to get physical. His touch, awareness and game intelligence allows him to prevent challenges being made when on form and I’ve seen him get stuck in too.

100 per cent he would still be here if he had come through under the current manager. Would also have come through as a deep lying playmaker rather than wide where even experienced players struggled at the time.

Part nostalgia, part depth. We need midfielders and I think he's out of contract/v cheap otherwise it wouldn't be discussed.

We can confirm that Angel Gomes has regained consciousness and has been transferred to hospital.

All our thoughts are turned towards him

Looked like a clash of heads to me. Unfortunately one of them is twice the size of the other.

That was posted before he was sent to the hospital, when I thought he'd just gone off for concussion. Deleted now
