Angel Di Maria

Would be a great deal - but can't see Benfica going for it to be honest.

Yea, it's rather far-fetched and based on nothing at all.

However, the one thing going for it is that Nani is probably still reasonably highly rated in Portugal because of his performances for the national team.

I would say there'd be quite a bit of interest from those clubs if we ever decided go sell. And he'd probably get his career back on track in a league that suited him.

If true, for that reason, Benfica may think there getting the best of the deal.

With him and Obertan bombing it down the wings we'll be back to our good looking best

So in the smallest possible chance we did sign him. Who will this argie want to stab us in the back for? I reckon Barca.

didnt ferguson just state no signings in january? Or was he talking specifically about defenders??looks a good player who would surely give us some pace and balance, would definatly improve us.

Would probably good for all parties concerned, including Nani which kind sucks as I like him as a player. I've always stood by him and I still think he'll turn out to be a quality footballer in his own right. Just not with Manchester United I feel.

Seen Di Maria an handful of times and he looks decent enough. Quick, direct and a good left foot. Would have a nice balance to the left thats for sure.

We shall see though as reports before this one were saying fees in the region of £30M or something silly!

Should we really have to offer Nani PLUS 9 million? Straight swap sounds more fair.

Although you know what they say about straight swaps. They never happen.

Benfica reject Di Maria bid

Benfica have rejected a bid for prized asset Angel Di Maria from Manchester United, according to reports in Portugal.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a host of Europe's top clubs this season following some stand-out displays in Benfica's midfield.

The bid from United was said to be in the region of €10million, with out-of-favour winger Nani also offered in exchange.

However, Portuguese radio station TSF have revealed that Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira has dismissed the bid with the club holding out for considerably more money.

The midfielder is said to have a €40million release fee clause in his current contract, but many believe Benfica will do business once they receive a bid in the region of €30million.

However, the Portuguese giants are reluctant to sell in January with the club aware that a successful World Cup with Argentina next summer could see Di Maria's valuation rocket.

It really doesn't.. Apparently they're holding out for £30m

Is he really any better than Nani though? I haven't seen much of him at all. How good is he?

Don't think anyone can say given he's not had a chance to prove himself at the top level yet - no CL games and only one start for Argentina.

Looked talented in the U-20 World Cup but I've not seen a lot of him since.

Maradona thinks he's quite good though: Argentina boss Maradona said: "Angel has the quality to be a worldwide superstar within the next two years. I have always followed his career closely and his level has increased enormously since he’s been in Europe."

Tbh, he doesn't look that much different to a young Nani when we were after him. There are better young prospects coming through atm around Europe itself.

Although, i have never watched him live but the next best thing to judge a player from is probably youtube videos - which didn't excite me as i thought they would either.

I've been watching him in the Europa League this season and I watched him yesterday for Argentina (against Catalunya). This lad is amazing.

Quick, skillful, he's a goal threat. Left-footed as well, he can play on the right or the left, often swapping wings during a match.

The only real concern I'd have is that he looks a bit lightweight - he needs to bulk up.

To be honest he kind of reminds me of a better version of Tosic. (That may be a bad thing though, I don't know. :nervous:)

At least there are reports of us trying to sign some sort of attack minded player. God knows we need someone in there with some new ideas.

You don't really think it'd be a bad move for us, do you?

Nani stood out every bit as much in Portugal. And then we paid what, £14-17 million for him?

Now Benfica want upwards of £25 million for Di Maria? Or more than £10 million plus that player who has already starred in their league?

I mean, you dont honestly believe Nani would go back to Portugal and not do the business there do you? You've always been very critical of Quaresma and even he did that much before earning Porto a big pay off when he left.

Mata is better and would probably cost less. Other than him I dont know another left footed left winger that is. But £9 million plus Nani would very likely be a very good deal for Benfica.

Nani's future not looking good at United.

Di Maria or not!

Major sideways step!!!!! Seriously the guy would frustrated the hell out of you guys.

Who cares?

We need him to do the business in England, not Portugal.

I have no idea whether this Di Maria kid is any good or not but an up and coming star who might be good enough to make it at United is clearly going to be more highly rated than a former up and coming star who wasn't good enough to make it at United.

Nani's failure to make the left wing his own over the last two seasons - with a 36 year old, an out of position striker and Ji Sung Park as the only competition - will have knocked millions off his market value. He is now worth considerably less than he was when we signed him.

A 36 year old who was voted 14th best footballer in Europe only a few weeks ago. There wasn't one left winger ahead of him in that list either. It's not like Kieran Richardson is keeping Nani out of the team

Very true. I would not mind Di Maria as I think he is a pretty good player from the few times I have been able to watch him. Even if he is not that good, I have a feeling he will do pretty good against Everton.

Fergie's previously made it abundantly clear that he prefers Giggs to play in central midfield. Giggs said the same thing himself.

He's too old to be running up and down the wing all season long. He's only stuck out there this season because Park has been injured/out of form and Nani flunked his audition. Again.

Giggs and Rooney would have kept almost every left winger in europe out of the side. Its absolutely no slight on Nani. And Park owes much to Ronaldo.

Regardless Nani should have done more this season to make sure he kept his place. But we could have had any left winger in the league and Giggs and Rooney would have outperformed them there when selected.

Regardless, Di Maria's record in Liga Sagres is no more impressive than Nani's in his final season before United signed him. Both led their team to second in the league (Nani's Sporting finishing behind Porto, Di Maria's Benfica behind Braga), Nani managing 5 goals and 0 assists in 26 starts, Di Maria thus far managing 0 goals and 2 assists in 12 starts.

Nani's side though were playing champions league football where he also managed to score a goal in the group stages in his 4 starts. Di Maria's side have only managed to get into the the europa league, but he has managed 3 goals in 6 in the group stages of that competition. Both players had broken into their full national teams, Portugal and Argentina respetively and both at a time when they were nowhere near as awful as they have been recently...

Nani signed for us in the summer of 07 when he was 20 I believe. Di Maria is 21 and is yet to prove anymore than Nani had done when we got him.
