Last season was actually the only season Di Maria really convinced me for a prolonged period of time. Before that he was pretty much like Nani and could have a few superb games and went into hiding for another 10 afterwards. Really frustrating to watch at times.

Actually I think moving him into a central midfield position with the freedom to venture forward and into the space that Ronaldo vacated did him a lots of favors. A lot of the midfielders he is facing have real trouble dealing with his pace and dribbling ability something that most fullbacks seemed to be able to handle better. But he also convinced on the wings the few times he played there this season and the most important part imo was that he consistently played on a very high level with only a few off-days.
When he plays in the centre he's quite unique due to his combination of ridiculous energy levels and frantic closing down of space, and genuine attacking threat with the technical ability to rum at defenders and beat them.

Hunter knows nothing as has been proved time and time again, he is a whopper of the highest order.

I don't get the hype with Di Maria. He's a good player but he's incredibly erratic in equal measure. Please don't tell me I haven't seen him play, I watch almost all of Real Madrid games.

Equal measure. I like that term, because it fits.

He sure picked his moments perfectly last season and I'm so happy for that, but if he's leaving for 60 mil € it's good business for Madrid. That would also mean Flo will go big on his WC pick this summer. Could be James, he would sell great..

Anyway, I think Di Maria could be better, more consistent player in EPL. Imagine that, what a player that would be..

What I meant was that he seemed very sure that Ronaldo would leave. I think he is a good journalist but he seems to get a lot of moves wrong. He could be right this time though.

That's not in the hands of the journalist though. They have no control if a move falls through. You can know something even if the outcome doesnt come out to be the way you suggested. He got flak because fans assumed he said Thiago to MUFC done deal even though I dont think there was anything like that. Just because Thiago went to Bayern doesn necessarily invalidate everything he reported. Deals are complicated. All a journalist can do is report the info they've heard and if they choose provide their opinion on how they think it will go

Last few? He called Thiago a done deal I think, then we had reports that Moyes pulled out.
Unless you remember him saying so, I dont remember that ever happening and I followed that deal pretty closely. Heart-breaking stuff when Bayern announced the deal.

The only problem with Di Maria is that he never looked a world class winger. He was excellent last season - one of the best players in the world - but not as a winger, mroe as an attackign midfielder.

That is very true and I was thinking that before I wrote what I said. I just think that he tends to get a lot wrong and he acts like he is in the know and is a little bit arrogant at times about the contacts that he claims to have. Overall I think he is a good journalist and I like his books but I think that he is biased towards Barcelona and normally is negative towards Madrid and that when there is talk of a player leaving he will always make it seem like they will definitely leave.

World class or not he'd still be a damn good player for us on the wings and much better than our current options. The main thing I love about him is his energy and never ending stamina. He plays like he's on crack. That will only be all the more appreciated in the prem. Then we'd also have the option of shifting him into an attacking midfield type role if LVG requires it for one of his wacky genius schemes. Would love him here, but won't be putting any credence in Hunters itk act. Not after Thiago...

That's fair. The weird thing is he may be in the know and he may not be. For us, it's hard to know since we are so far removed. Depends on other aspects too. If he's getting tipped off by a good source and the source is being truthful with the info then he'll have a good sense of what's going on. However, I don't think this is always the case.

I am not entirely sure that he did call it a done deal. As you said that you followed the deal very closely, I guess you are right. I didn't follow the whole Thiago saga with much interest.

Think the "done deal" impression came from fact he tweeted 80/20 meaning 80% chance he goes to MUFC then I think he tweeted something about personal terms being agreed with thiago which coincides with what ducker and others said. Ever since then, I've taken much less emotional stock in our transfers. It was very weird. Only cracked a smile when Shaw signed.

It does make sense that if Madrid are going to fund a move for Rodriguez they need to get rid of Di Maria. I'd absolutely love him here.

Hunter talks so much bollocks. But you're right if they want James they'll need to sell and like they did Ozil it could be Di Maria. I wonder though if I'd prefer him over Sanchez though. Tough one.

Di Marzio's said we're interested too so there must be something in it. Although he says PSG are interested and ready to offer Madrid a big deal so unless we stump up a lot of money I think he'll be off there.

PSG look like they don't give a feck about FFP. 50 mil for Luiz and now this.

I wouldn't be too disappointed if we didn't get him. In fact, I'd rather not spunk £50m on him. PSG can have him.

I would have preferred Sanchez or Cuadrado personally...but no complaints here if we get Di Maria

You'd be surprised how close Ronaldo was to a move.

He never said Thiago was a done deal. He said the deal was close enough for personal terms to be agreed.

Hunter is a bellend, that doesn't mean he doesn't have sources.

How close?

Ferguson or not, Ronaldo was never coming back IMO. There was absolutely no reason for him to leave his darling club Madrid and his inevitably high wage to return to Manchester. It's his past.

while a CB and a CM are the priority right now, a world class attacker would be more than welcomed into the squad.

i would like to believe the reason why we are not in for sanchez is because we want di maria.

Can't believe Madrid wants to sell him. This is ridiculous even by their standards. I have no idea if we can get him or not, but this guy shits all over Sanchez and Cuadrado.

Madrid don't like mid-term contract renegotiations and they've already given Di Maria one early payrise. They think he's trying to get another one. Plus they like shiny new toys.

Me too. Personally, watching him last season, I view him as two players for the price of one (an expensive one for sure). A winger with flair and pace, and a midfielder with energy and a surprising amount of discipline. If we want to spend on a forward I'd be happy to see the cash go on Di Maria.

The idea that he might go to PSG and we buy Cavani to fund it, now that bothers me.

Good player. Feel like his best position is in a kind of attacking central midfield where his relentless pressing and dribbling ability overwhelms opposition midfields like we saw last season. As a winger he can be a bit hit and miss. Never quite convinced me but that's probably because I've never seen more than 20 Madrid matches per season.

But be careful when Madrid is ready to offload players. They have a habit of selling players at maximum value following up on a good season that might never be repeated at the new clubs. More often than not they will cost massive money, probably even overpriced. Makelele, Robben and Sneijder worked out great on a decent fee but they underperfomed at Madrid. Higuain is ok. However they're extremely proficient at selling lemons too - que Ozil...., Morientes, Albiol etc. Just hope Di Maria isn't another red herring.
