He is potentially to be the type of player United need but not sure if he is up to the standard yet to perform at good level, week in week out.

Still very much work in progress, although I am hopeful he can play more regularly this season as the team progresses into more high intensity, high pressure defensive line game.
I really hope so too. He reminds me a bit of Scholes so I might be biased because he was my favorite player.

If he can't get into the squad over McTominay, then he has no future here. He is clearly the better player, the only thing McT has on him is height.

What other reason is there for McTominay to make the bench ahead of him?

Especially when we already have Matic and Fellaini starting.
Physicality. The fact 3 days ago he was playing in Brazil, and we already had attacking midfield options on the bench.

Should be starting our next two games with Matic out next weekend. The way things are going for him though, Jose will now start Matic midweek and play McTominay next weekend.

He doesn't offer enough at the moment for us. He's not a DM. He doesn't push forward and attack at all.

He reminds me a lot of a street footballer, his best skill is that he can keep the ball very well under pressure. But he doesn't have great dribbling, okay passing, so it's a bit hard to fit him in anywhere.

With Fellaini playing the deeper role in the last couple of matches, I would really be interested in seeing Pereira playing instead of Matic. Other than a 5 minute period in the second half where he suddenly decided to be fantastic, I felt Matic was fairly average. Obviously there are question marks over Pereira as the main defensive midfielder, but if Fellaini is there in that role then Pereira's ability on the ball could very well be more useful to the team as a whole than Matic. Of course, Fred will also be eyeing that position as well.

The kid plays for Brazil over the international break and can't event get on the bench when he gets back,I don't get it

Maybe because he was in Brazil 3 days ago and because we were playing a physically challenging opponent it makes more sense to have McTominay on the bench if Deeney and Grey outmuscle our defence instead of Pereira.

If Fellaini went off injured we needed a physical presence. We already had Fred on the bench as well.

He couldn't make the bench even before the international break either though

Strange handling of him by Mourinho.
Young light midfielder is playing when we have injured players then stops playing against Burnley, Watford and Spurs. Strange. It really isn't. Now if he doesn't feature or makes the squad in CL on Wednesday then i'll write a complaint letter to Mourinho myself about his handling of him.

Probably playing in UCL would be more suited to his game. Not many other European sides playing that physical, long ball game apart from some teams in EPL. I expect to see him back for the midweek game.

To be honest it seems Fellaini has taken that deeper role, if anything I think it’s opened the doors for Fred. But it’s possible he opts for Pereira.

Fellaini might only be used in that position against teams who look to play direct long balls though.

But Watford don't really play long and direct that much. I think it was more a case of Watford having two big men upfront and the formation working well against Burnley. I think Fellaini will keep playing that role until he gets found out.

Frankly it's like you've never seen him play. He is probably a second best passer in the team after Pogba (to be fair, the competition isn't that good — it's between him, Mata, Fred and Matic, neither of whom are amazing), he is a great dribbler and has a mean shot on him.

I think you mistake what I mean, he has very good dribbling under pressure, can get away from people in midfield. But he's not a great attacker in the final third, he can't drive forward and beat a man consistently the way a Hazard or Mane can. He's slow and doesn't have that decisive step to get away from people. A bit like Isco.

He might have good passing, but he doesn't show it for us. Pre-season and the games he's played this season, he's been very safe and boring with it. To get in ahead of our current midfield options, even Mctominay at the moment, he needs to take the initiative and show more. We have a league cup game coming up, I'm hoping he can show more there. To be fair, I am a fan of his, I like him and followed him at Granada and Valencia and thought he was good. But I think he's more Isco than Kante, and he needs to show it.

He'll be back in the team once we become a bit stable after a rocky start to the season. He'll play against Derby and will probably be on the bench vs Young Boys. Relax people.

That's not true - during pre-season he showed his passing range in nearly every game he played. He's clearly the best passer after Pogba in this team.

EDIT: Highlights from his pre-season

Ah yeah my bad, I was thinking of last years pre-season where he was pretty safe with his passing. Missed most of this years pre-season, but he still hasn't showed much at all creatively in the competitive games we've had this season.

He did show more during pre-season but to be fair he's only played 2 PL games for us so far.

He's played 3 halves of competitive football this season. Against Leicester, he was widely praised and the best of our three midfielders while. Then against Brighton, he's subbed off at half despite not being at fault for any of the goals and that's that. I don't see how we can expect him to show off his skill when he hasn't been given a chance. He's looked like a quality player pretty much every game for us and should easily be ahead of Scott.

Yeah I'm hoping he shows more in the league cup if he gets games. He's a talented player but really needs to impose himself on games. Watching his highlight videos at Granada and Valencia, his best games imo were the ones against Barca and Real, he really excels when he's under pressure which could be useful against teams like Pool and City that like to press. But against easier teams that sit back he's just not doing enough.

Yeah with the games coming thick and fast he will get more game time - like you said he needs to impose himself a bit more. I think that's where he let himself down against Brighton. He has to try dictate the game for us more but obviously this will only come with more experience.
