I think it's interesting that McTominay was Jose personal player of the year last season, yet we go and sign Fred and McTominay has barely kicked a ball this season.

In the one game Andreas played this season I thought he looked much more accomplished than any of McTominay's performances last season.

Yeah that's the main point for me. I totally get why Fellaini is in the team and he was excellent today. But I don't see what McTominay brings to the team over Pereira. Simple as that. But Jose has decided otherwise.he even said how heartbroken he was today to not feature him.

Another players confidence ruined. I like how we big players up when it’s all going well but as soon as they get the boot, we don’t want to defend them. I’m going to start calling this the Luke Shaw syndrome.
Because Luke Shaw looks like he's shot of confidence...

Yeah it works for certain players. The Lampards, the Joe Coles. But I wonder if players are the same these days. Football has changed quite a lot and players are now king, agents are even stronger. Some players need a hug, others a boot up the backside. Thats what made Fergie so great cos he knew how to do both. Jose has already admitted he can't. That's why he left it to Rui Faria. I hope Carrick and McKenna can do that. tbh Shaw has surprised me. I didn't think he was strong enough mentally to come back here. Super happy. Just praying he doesn't get injured.

We should try him on the right wing from time to time. Won't lose much. Not convinced by this DM experiment anyway. He'll be decent in it but can't see it being his future position at all.

1) No you weren't talking about deeper lying midfield roles. You said all midfield roles and especially deeper roles.

2) You ignored Motta and Alonso for no reason whatsoever. I'm guessing you ignored it because it doesn't fit your point.

Motta and Alonso are flair players? As in the same way Pereira plays the deep lying role? Think you’re the one whose clueless. Alonso and Motta are very astute players defensively. Pereira plays the holding role the same way a Pirlo would albeit he does try his best to put in a defensive shift - I just don’t think at this moment in time his defensive game is developed enough for him to be trusted by Mourinho and that is fair enough. As I said it wasn’t a surprise he’s out of the side and that isn’t a criticism. If he does come back into the side it’ll be for easier games or if he is used more in a double pivot with a more defensive midfielder alongside him.

Unfortuantely, when all midfielders are fit, it makes it very hard for him to get into the matchday squad.

Mourinho normally has five midfielders in the squad. 3 starting, 2 on the bench.

You'd expect our first three to be Matic, Pogba, Fred, with Fellaini and Herrera as our bench players.

If Pereira is going to replace anyone, then its going to be Herrera, as he's more similar in style, in comparison to Fellaini, who gives us a whole different option.

We wont see him til the league cup/fa cup games. Unless 2 midfielders are getting injured, he probably wont make the bench in the league

Perriera played defensive midfield until Matic came back .

That was it anyone who thought he would stay on the squad after Matic was back were kidding themselves

Seems in good spirits which is positive - the cups start this month so he should get more game time soon ❤

I will keep saying this, he will be the next KDB, Salah, Lukaku etc. Will be happy if I'm proved wrong though.

I'm kind of devastated he has not been in the last two matchday squads. I hope he keeps working hard and keeps impressing the manager. He really should be ahead of Scott McTom who should be send out on loan

Not sure what you're basing this on. He looks promising but shown nothing to suggest he will be the level of any of the three above.

Agreed, no way McTominay should be in the queue ahead of Pereira.

In the sense that Mourinho didn't trust any of them and they ended up becoming very good players elsewhere.

While I think his best position is a CM in a midfield 3, I would like to see him on the RW.

It’s not like we’ve got anyone outstanding there. Mata and Lingard are better in the CAM and Rashford and Martial are natural strikers.

Mctominay should have been sent on loan to a championship club pushing for promotion. Doubt he’d start at any PL club week after week

This thread is pathetic. Alot of moaning over a player who has shown talent but not been in 2 matchday squads which apparently means is the end. Jose wants him to fight for his place and give. The mentality he's shown I suspect he will and get chances throughout the course of a season we ay in 4 competitions.

I can't remember who it was and in what thread but I said before the season started that Fellaini and then Matic will be pretty much rushed back in front of him. The user's name started with A, there you go though I was off by a couple of weeks but Matic/Fellaini rushed straight in there. Fellaini rushed into the Burnley game because of his physicality (which worked perfectly) and that he's a security blanket player for Mourinho and those two can take the heat as 'senior' players. I mentioned seniority.

I like to think this as more; shielding Peirera from the brunt of the failure and taking him away from that role to limit the amount of detrimental game time he'd get by us getting flogged.

Yeah, if you look at it you'd say that's pure Jose(I said that in the past), the same with Shaw last season that got instantly replaced by Young when Young came back from injury.

But, if this hard love will work for Andreas like it worked for SHaw, it;s for the better. Also it;s good that Jose did that to him, it will help Andreas not get carried away after 2 good performances.

He just needs to put his head down, work hard and take his chances when given. It's not like he would've came back from Valencia and be an instant starter.

Yeah he's done. He may as well be dead. fecking Mourinho!!He hasn't played him for two games!!Ruining another top top talent!!!!!

Whilst I don't think we should overreact, what reason that is good for Pereira confidence, can there be for him not to be in the squad over Scott McTominay?

Hopefully as games will start to come quick and fast with league,CL and LC he will get a bit more game time, a decent LC run will help some of the fringe players.

We’ll wait and see. He’ll probably be back for the cup game and stink up the place.

McTominay is more defensive and physical. I can totally understand the idea.

I don't think Mourinho sees him as a winger at all. He actually bemoaned Pereira's role on the wings while on loan at Valencia. His actual wording was that it was a 'wrong position'. I think he's suited for this role. He did well in it last preseason as well.

Wonder if Scholes inspired him in anyway; can see shades of it in his play, including the mistimed tackles lol.

He can dictate the play which is something none of our starters can do.
He is potentially to be the type of player United need but not sure if he is up to the standard yet to perform at good level, week in week out.

Still very much work in progress, although I am hopeful he can play more regularly this season as the team progresses into more high intensity, high pressure defensive line game.

Agree, also not liking the continual down-putting of McTominay.

He's not alone. You might find Fred sat next to him too and we just paid 50m for him. Fellaini was outstanding last week, Herrera is finding his form slowly again and is disciplined to follow specific tasks asked of him. Pereira is still young and learning the role of 6 so just part of his education. He has a big future here....

We finally have some competition in midfield, someone has to miss out. I would like to see McTominay get a loan though for the season, similar to pereira last year.

Agree it's about patience when is one of the hardest things to have as a fan in football. Who'd have thought many were hoping Fellaini would be fit for today's game or Shaw could show his form again? Both will have their chance but aren't ready which isn't usual as there aren't many young players (under 24 'ish) playing regular starts in key positions at big clubs.
