I would rather sign Sanches instead. If we're going for failed Portuguese transfers.

He seems to have fallen off a cliff. Watched him in the u21s against Spain the other day and he was the worst player on the pitch. Got subbed off quite early as well from what I can remember.

For someone that should be a leader in that side it was a shocking display. Granted it's one game, but it's at a level where he should at least be making an impression.

Gross exaggeration on Sanches, who incidentally is the youngest in the squad

Poor last season and with his pedigree he should be making a massive impression on this tournament.

This time last year he was with Portugal at the euros. This year he can't get into the squad after struggling at Bayern who are now supposedly looking to sell.

If that's not his career taking a nose dive I don't know what is.

He'd fit well in your team, considering your style. I can see why Mourinho would want him.

Just went through his thread on a Barca forum, there's a poster with the same name as you defending Gomes, is it you? Seems to be the only poster there who rate Gomes, everybody else is convinced he's utter dross.

Can you tell me what you see in this guy? I've watched almost all of Barca's games last season and he' been shocking imo. One of the reasons they didn't win the title.

With your logic we shouldn't have bought lindelof and we shouldn't be in the market for any new signing.
We need to look long term, were not exactly stacked in midfield, other Pogba and Herrera who are quality, we've an aging Carrick, plan b Fellaini, young prospect and inexperience in tuanzebe and Mensah. We need additions.
What logic that I am against long term project? Did I mention TFM, Axel, Pereira... need game time even in midfield? If you meant about Gomes' quality, then yes I have been saying he would add nothing to our team since I can't see he fit in any style of play. Look for somebody else. Even 50 mil for Dier lookx more like good business than 30 mil for this guy. (waste 30 mil for nothing, the 20 mil leftover in this market is impossible to get you any decent proven player). If this guy is our target, then rather stick with our own youngsters even if it's makeshift.

Edit: I keep forget our own Gomes. Why not give him some game time instead of buying no quality to fill the squad.

Edit 2:

Barsa rejected 35 m€ for Gomes (a Premier League team)

If this is any real, then 30+ mil GBP for this guy, Dier at 50 mil is bargain (No I am not a fan to go all out for Dier. I would prefer N Zonzi, Fabinho. Just my opinion on this how bad a deal signing this Gomes lad)

19 years old, if you write off every player at that age then there's no such thing as development

I'm not writing him off. Just saying this season compared to last has been a massive step down.

......
Based on what exactly? He has hardly played over the season, has taken a massive hit on his confidence and is actually in an Under 21 tournament with its most experienced roster in years. It would be ultra surprising if he was making a huge splash in such circumstances.

At that age, not sure it's accurate to assess it as a step down - perhaps more a case of making too big a step by going to Bayern. Not sure, perhaps some Bayern fans can weigh in more on the player but the one I saw against Spain was far from the worst on the pitch - but clearly a player that is far from the finished article. Then you see his age and you realize it's all too early to make too many sweeping generalizations IMHO

OT: That being said, very impressed by Guedes, Semedo & Podence. Cancelo vs Bellerin, gotta be honest - I don't see much separating the two atm

Semedo? He joined Villareal and you will get to know him well. He's too inconsistent and error prone. He was almost flawless against Real Madrid away for the CL and then shite the rest of the year. Maybe he will evolve with age and experience but i think he lacks football brain.

It was his first season in a disrupted Barca team in which he was used all over the place. Not as relevant as his previous seasons with Valencia where he showed great potential. He could fail to live up to that potential, but one season is not enough to consider him shit or whatever adjectives people use to make fun of the guy.

I also said on that forum that I would sell him for 40m. For less than that I would rather keep him and see what he does under Valverde.

He didnt play in a 2 man midfield at Valencia. He played in a 3 man as the most advanced/attacking of the 3.

https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/55/Archive/Spain-Valencia?stageId=12647

I looked up his games for Barcelona and from the ones I looked at he was subbed on for Rakitic 2 times, started another and was subbed off for Mascherano, played right midfield and scored 2 goals with Busquets in CM, played right midfield with Busquets in CM again. So now im looking at his first games for Barcelona and he played left of the midfierld 3 with Busquets in CM, then right with Busquets in CM, then same again, and same again and then finally against City he was back on the left of the midfield 3 with Busquets in CM

So doesn't look like he was a replacement for Busquets at all, would have been a really odd choice in the first place but theres no evidence whatsoever from the lineups that he was playing his role or competing with him for it. Rakitic was the one he was being subbed with most but sometimes it was all of Gomes, Rakitic and Busquets playing.

Regardless here are some of his clips of where he did look like a player with potential for Valencia and in the areas he should be used.

Shit thats not him

Bumping an old thread, but I think it's worth it.

So there's this fantastic, yet very depressing interview, in the latest Panenka (one of the best football magazines btw), where Andre Gomes broke his silence and opened up on the time in Barcelona. The whole interview is actually quite disturbing, and probably one of the most depressing one I've ever read from a footballer - he admits he's ashamed to go on the streets of Barcelona, that he is extremely embarrassed, that he lost all of his confidence. Some quotes from translation by Marca:
"I don't allow myself to let out the frustration that I have.

"So what I do is I don't talk to anyone, I don't annoy anyone.

"It's as if I feel ashamed.

"The notion of not wanting to leave the house has happened to me on more than one occasion.

"The idea of people being able to see you, it gives off a fear of going out into the street because of embarrassment."
"Thinking too much hurts me because I think of bad things and then about what I have to do,"

"What's most difficult for me is to be aware of everything.

"It annoys me when they say that I can do a lot of good things, because I ask myself why I'm not doing them."

I think a Spanish version sounds a bit more dramatic.
I really rated this lad back in Valencia and was quite positive about his career in Barça - granted, he was really disappointing there, but sometimes I've got the impression Barça fans were exceptionally harsh on him. He's still quite young and there's future ahead of him, the sooner he leaves Barcelona the better I guess.

I don't get it.

Barca gets rid of homegrown players who got less chances and performed better than he did all the time, yet nobody cares. Somehow this guy gets a lot of attention, is appartently treated really, really poor and fans have been exceptionally harsh?

To those who can understand Spanish the first two minutes of this video is the audio of that interview:

Sounds like his best bet would be to move to a smaller club with less spotlight and pressure, so he can build himself back up.

No need to bump a transfer thread to discuss his Barca performances. If there's something legit to talk about then find a Gomes thread in the Footy (or start one if absolutely necessary).
