Andre Gomes

He's always struck me as being the type of player that is the very definition of "central midfielder". He's not got the defensive discipline and isnt physical or combative enough to play as a destroyer, he's not really a got the engine and the work rate to be a proper box-to-box dynamo, he isn't the pacy trickster to play out wide effectively, and he isn't the creative genius to play as a proper number 10.

He's very much (in my opinion) a player that links play from back to front. He's mobile enough, though not blessed with any real pace or athleticism. He can pass well enough, but he's no Scholes. He can tackle well enough for a high press, but you wouldn't want him mopping up in front of the back four. He generally brings the ball forward, spreads play and it's his job to get the better players on the ball. Completely unspectacular in any one area of anything.

If the fees for him and for Renato Sanches were similar, say around 30m Euros, you'd just have to make a call on the fact that Gomes is more experienced and Sanches has more potential. Gomes is likely going to be calmer on the ball and less eye-catching, whereas Sanches will run himself into the ground but possibly at the risk of seeming like a headless chicken who hasn't yet developed the maturity and decision ma
Going by his narrative then Gomes is very un Mourinho player. Can't defend deep. Can't control nor play out fromthe back quickly ordirectly enough...

Renato may be one dimensional but potentially fit the profile as a pressing machine as ball carrier in counterattacking.

I think he would probably compliment our midfield quite nicely in all reality. Herrera at DM and Gomes in the centre in a disciplined role recycling possession. Allowing Pogba to be the main man and roam forward with more freedom - it would be quite a balanced middle 3.. certainly from a defensive standpoint.

If we got him though you would need absolute faith in your attacking 3 players because Gomes doesn't do enough going forward. Which would be the big worry.

Overall view is that it wouldn't be a bad signing, but I think we can do better.

Seems like a decent signing if we want a few more draws.

Pereira looked better and showed more promise last year than this guy during his tenure in Valencia. No need to fiil our squad with more average players.

Imagine a midfield of him, Fellaini and Lingard.
Replace Lingard with Wazza and we could have a really great midfield.

On a more serious note, if Mourinho wants him, feels he could excel at United, i'm far more positiv than when thinking about bringing in someone like Perisic. Gomes definitely has some skills.

He's shite, a total passenger in midfield.

I never understood why this guy was linked with the biggest clubs last summer, and predictably he's been shite for Barca.

Would be a complete waste of money.

He's 23 ffs, he's got plenty of time to develop his game. He's going to develop as an interceptor that can pass the ball then a destroyer who leaves the passing to someone else. That's exactly what we need.

He will be the next Paul Gascoigne if he comes.

Yes please. Think he is a great silky player. Can get lost at times, but for 35 m (reportedly), I'd take a gamble on him.

He was criticized since the start so is mentality was never balanced trough the season.
Great! All we need is another mentally weak player who will get hung out to dry by Mourinho at various points throughout the season. Probably not a good fit for our manager.

Rather not, much prefer to give Pereira a run over this guy.

Oh god please no, if he leaves us that's great news, but I don't want to watch him play for United, send him to Liverpool, Inter or even Espanyol.

Also, I don't get where people see his talent or him being a "silky player", even in the video vs City on the first page you can see the way he hits the ball is not very plastic and it doesn't seem to go where he wants to send it, almost makes me cringe

Reading this makes me cringe, wtf.

Portuguese Cleverley then, do not want.

He had a pretty bad season with Barca but the bags of potential is still there. I wont be surprised if he blows up next season. I am surprised at our interest in him though. He has a bad habit of lazing around.

We've established that Jose likes mentally tough players, Gomes doesn't fit the bill at all IMO, he's got ability but he's flakey.

Awful season with Barcelona. He was pretty much the poster boy of their mediocre season.

seems to me like a scapegoat. everyone after him last summer and barce got him. not amazing but I would still think good value at this price.
Let's go for amazing.

He wasn't a scapegoat. Just out of his depth at a team.

Has anyone who has watched him extensively tell me if he is any good, i watched a few barca games last season and he seemed like cleverley to me, lot of sideways and backward passes, very little to show from the creative perspective and not really good defensively, ofcourse this could just be me watching him when he hadn't settled well in that team.

I've watched almost all of the games he's played in and he's had a shocker of a season in all honesty. The general consensus amongst Barca fans is that he simply can't cut the mustard.

He gets pushed off the ball very easily which is strange for a guy of his size playing in LaLiga. He looks awkward on the ball and technically inept which is again not characteristic for a Portuguese/Spanish player. Opposition midfielders usually run rings around him and his partners whenever he plays.

Also, He doesn't have the discipline and defensive nuance to compliment Pogba. Admittedly, my opinion is solely based on his last season showings. I've never watched him play before he came to Barcelona. But I hope we steer clear.

Could be a very shrewd buy for us in my opinion someone very capable of dictating our tempo. Yes he had a poor season but he's not the first. Could become a right top player. Hope we sign him at a cut price.

You'd drop Herrera in favour of Gomes? Is that just because he'd be a shiny new toy?

Double pivot with Pogba in a 4231 formation.
Yes but that doesn't really answer my question. You'd drop Herrera in favour of Gomes? As @Enigma_87 said, Barca clearly don't rate Gomes, and apparently were looking at Herrera to replace him anyway. Interesting opinion to say the least...

who is less shite.... Gomes or Sanches.
Sanches hand down. Sanches being asked to be complete midfielder which he failed at Bayern, but arguably being assigned a specific role he has some outstanding attribute to be very useful. Gomes' supposed strength lies with his skills, passing, vision & intelligence which all are just underwhelming.

Also seems that Sanches qualities are built for the epl

IMO he is. I would say in case he develop, he can be Kante-ish with more attacking quality. I am surprised to see people who admired Kante quite despised this Sanches kid. At the right price, I would take him in a heartbeat.

I suspect people look at this Gomes lad as Carrick replacement in his range of passing, ability to spread play, shield the ball and fantasize his development than really looking at his natural game which lack the defensive quality to ever play the deep role shielding the defense.

After we were linked with him, i thought the general consensus around here was that we dodged a bullet. What changed?
