Why are we signing a player, who deliberately took performance enhancing drugs, will be out for 6 months of the year playing the African Cup of Nations, will cost us £50m when we could have got him for free, palms the ball straight to attackers, will try to dribble a pressing player and lose the ball, played in the Dutch league and again another player, which has a connection with ETH, has an attitude problem and will down tools, is of African descent and we know what that means in his keeping ability and has only one good season in a top league?!
The only way this could be any worse is if he also played in tracksuit bottoms and short sleeve goalie top.

Call me old fashioned, but I’d rather have a keeper who keeps clean sheets!

It all depends. If the keeper helps the defence to be more forward thinking and aggressive and makes 2 mistakes in a season that costs us a goal but having a keeper like that plays a part in a style of football that means you score an extra 30 goals then I'd rather that than a David Seaman.

I'll be honest I don't even care about his keeping ability or how good he is on the ball. Ever since I saw that video of him saying "scared of who? of HIM?!?! Listen my friend - a man should never be scared of another man." when speaking about Haaland, I've wanted him here.

That's a Manchester United player right there. He has that dog in him.

Call me old fashioned but I’d rather my keeper wear a flat cap, have a large bushy moustache and weigh at least 17stone.
Sorry. I’m on my last drink, honestly. Bed.

Can’t wait for the furore when our experts find out he’s only 6’2” and 3 quarters.

DO OUR SCOUTS NOT HAVE TAPE MEASURES?

EMBARRASSING

Say that when he scrubs his butt across your cream carpets and burns all your lawn with his pee!

I saw that recently. I love it, not only that but he then backed it up with an excellent performance in the biggest game on world football.

No doubt he's improved.

I'm talking more about his style and his nonchalance. He appears to take it a step further than the other ball-playing keepers we see. Obviously, I'm willing to give him a chance, but can't say I'm all that enthused by the signing. A lot of that is ignorance as I haven't seen that much of him, to be fair.
I’d argue his ’nonchalance’ can be seen as a strength too. He is skilled and he doesn’t doubt his capabilities on the ball. I haven’t seen enough of him to tell, and I know it doesn’t always pay off for him. But from the little I’ve seen him, in the Champions League, what I saw was a player with a strong character who dominated the space around him - at the highest level, he was impressive to me at least. Just sat there thinking, that is what we need, so hope he lives up to that as well.

You think we are overpaying?

Yeah, I think his market value was probably like 20-30M until this past season and his CL run.

Doesn't mean he won't be worth it. I think Ten Hag knows we were lucky to finish where we did considering our GD wasn't very good, and he wants way more control in games than we had, so presumably getting Mount and Onana is all about pushing us up the field and playing more of a WM like everyone else is apparently doing.

Players value increases/decreases based on how well they perform. That's how it works.

You've made a statement implying we're overpaying - what is your justification for it? As in - do you have any points of reference for players in the same position, with similar attributes, age etc?

Also, where did you get that 20-30M valuation from?

Honestly man, that video hit me like Frank White's 'blue magic" heroin in the 80's. From time to time I randomly go watch it again for another fix

the way he said "scared of HIM?!?" "yes, he's maybe one of the best. they're a very good team - but they have to show they're the best because we're going to be there!"

what a guy

he was so perplexed at the notion of them being afraid of City/Haaland that when the interview seemingly concluded he still asked the journalist "why would I be afraid? like, what?"

Him, Martinez, Casemiro - these characters are needed for trophy winning teams. Guys that go out there to put the opposition in the BDSM basement.

Have a feeling that we will be reminded of how GK for United is one of the hardest roles in world football. Scrutiny will be rife after the first mistake.

Crazy to think some fans don’t remember the difficulty we had replacing Schmeichel. DDG has meant we’ve taken it for granted for many years.

the club tweeted out DDG was officially not returning a few hours after Romano said we reached a verbal deal and the bid will be formally accepted next week. I feel like even us fans have been extremely well informed on the deal. Both sides are telling everyone.

Clearly a decision has been made and I think ETH is pivotal in that. I see the nice words from the club and ETH as a bit of a patch up job.

This hasn’t been handled ideally.

 ffs of course I was joking you muppets. Just summarised every shortsighted complaint and comments from this very thread. As for the African descent bit, you only have to read some of the posts here and Zion Suzuki's regarding people's biases subconscious or not.

What was originally said? :smirk:

yeah Onana is done. He'll be announced next week. DDG's been a free agent for about a week now? But it has been radio silence. We obviously held off the DDG announcement until a keeper was secured.

I'm just really surprised how easy this one was to follow as a transfer muppet. Inter telling some of their journo's first, our side waited until Mount was announced and then it was a flood of UK news. Then the Italian ones were a step ahead on the progression of the deal and now Romano is saying it's done. I don't think we got many fakers on this one which is quite refreshing, but I guess that could also be down to GK transfers not being as "sexy" as strikers/mids

Say that when he scrubs his butt across your cream carpets and burns all your lawn with his pee!

No cure for that, eh? :(

And it would take a month to grow the seed into a nice grass again. A never ending cycle.

Not worried in the slightest about him being out GK.

What I am expecting though is "DDG would of saved that" in the match day threads everytime a goal is scored against us.

I read somewhere that inter were under pressure to sell this summer. At €50m it’s a reasonable fee for a first team player and can’t think of who else we could have gone for - I was really underwhelmed by Diogo Costa’s shot stopping on review.

Isn't it the highest fee ever for a keeper his age? All-time.

It doubled or so on Transfermarket (though was this high 3-4 years ago before his suspension and running down his contract) and Ajax said they would sell if a good offer came in when he said he would leave the next summer. Lyon was close and reports said they were offering like 10M. Fair to say we could have bought him for under 20M if we'd moved for him 18 months ago.

He's a good keeper and a special passer, which we do seem to need badly for Ten Hag's system, I'm glad it's happening, but this does look like buying a player at his peak (not before) off his best ever season for a hefty fee.

We generally have money and we need at least 3 starting quality players (keeper, #9, a deeper midfielder) so filling one for 40M is fine, but yeah I'd say the market would look at this as overpaying for a keeper Ten Hag wants. Not a bad idea, since lot of transfers fail and at least we know the manager and player want to work together so it's safer for us to overpay, not say a situation like Spurs buying wingers that Conte didn't want (Gil) then buying wingbacks for Conte then hiring a manager who wants his fullbacks tucked inside and playing in midfield more.

Stop the polarised culture war. If he’s our new keeper we are all behind him. I do think we have taken for granted the pressure of being United’s number 1 though, albeit for this version of United rather than back when success was an obligation.

Keepers have a one season peak? I think his performances on the big stage are what qualifies him as being ready for the move. I didn’t see this as overpaying and think the proof will be in how he performs.

Alisson’s fee is largely not mentioned, same as Ederson - because they were both huge successes.

On a budget this summer? Sell players effectively and increase funds at your disposal. Surely that is the answer instead of shopping in the bargain basket.

Yes but we didn't.

In those 18 months he's had a season where he was the best goalkeeper in the Champions League.
I don’t think many would have identified him as qualified at that stage. We also weren’t actively looking for a GK then so a bit of a non-argument.

To me it's the way that even after the interview is over he feels the need to ask again why he would be afraid. He's totally incredulous about the suggestion.
