prediction: he'll make 2-3 bad looking mistakes and this place will implode every time.

Is his handling a problem though, has it actually cost his team goals?

I really don't watch enough Serie A but I didn't see any errors that lead to a goal. For me, he just doesn't pass the eye test. (for his catching / handling before people jump in w/o the full context)

Worse shot stopper then DDG? Are we talking DDG 8 years ago or today? He palms the ball into his own net. Some of the clangers he's dropped have been absolutely embarrassing.

I would say DDG's shot stopping is totally average at this point. The rest of his game is below that.

I think worse than today's DDG, prime DDG was incredible. Today's DDG is an average PL keeper going by PSxG (still better than guys like Ramsdale, Ederson, Sanchez just using PSxG). However he does do some positioning things right so the attacker ends up in a worse position than he would've otherwise.

But yeah there's other areas to goal keeping (Sweeping, dealing with crosses, penalties, passing etc.) that hopefully make up because DDG is really crap at those.

Agreed, they all have howlers in their resume, it's part of the job, it's a difficult one and a small mistake can lead to a memorable howler. During their prime the only goalkeeper that I don't remember making many mistakes were Buffon and Van der Sar(excluding his Juventus experience) but even then I'm almost sure that they had at least a couple of terrible howlers.
The only howler I can remember from VDS was that one against West Brom that robbed us of a perfect home season. I think that was 2010.

That's the case for every 'mistake'...unless it's a mistake by a non-United player then it'll be made fun of then forgotten.

All GKs make mistakes, especially weird one's when they are more involved throughout their box and outside of the box. Shit happens, the ball is round.

Alcohol has entered my bloodstream so all caveats hereby apply, but I would say as a general statement that our defense was our strength, our midfield was respectable, but that our attack was by far our weakness. Generally speaking, keepers have a much less substantial impact on goals scored than on goals conceded. I’m struggling to find any casual relationship between De Gea’s ability to pick out the right pass to his fullback and the inability of our forwards to convert on great chances.

Recall the chance Sancho had against Fulham that led to the pk that led to Mitrovic losing his mind. Sancho should have scored on that glorious chance. That he didn’t in no way can be connected back to De Gea. We went on match after match with ridiculous amounts of glorious chances wasted. You don’t expect to convert on all of them, but you don’t expect to see a team which spent 160m between two forwards, Sancho and Antony, be as surreally bad on goal as they were. As for Martial, I really hope no one here is blaming De Gea for how absurdly poor Martial has been the last two seasons.

Bring in Onana, but don’t expect his brilliant passes to his fullbacks to turn Martial, Sancho and Antony into clinical finishers.
I completely agree. We need better from sancho, Antony, Martial and Bruno. Our defense was our main strength. The sheer amount of basket ball like games they navigated without conceding much (if at all) was insane. Even the Fulham game you mentioned, Sancho missing that chance actually saved us. It gave Fulham the chance to crap all over themselves. Prior to that moment, they were dominating the game. We were looking to feed off the counter, at old Trafford! This is what we need to change. Lesser teams should be pinned back by our high line and ball retention.

Gonna have a heart attack watching him week in week out.

On the scale of ball-playing, there's probably a happy medium somewhere between "De Gea" and "casually trying to dribble strikers on your own goalline in a farmer's field in Malawi"... but if it's one or the other, I'm glad to give the second one a go.

We will do what will yield the best results and the most chances. Pinning back Brighton might not be a great idea. It‘s exactly what they want.

Counter attacking footbal/counterpressing is also attacking footbal and can be very entertaining.

The only howler I can remember from VDS was that one against West Brom that robbed us of a perfect home season. I think that was 2010.

He had a few, he had a couple of games in a row where he bizarrely palmed the ball down into the oncoming attacker, against Portsmouth and Roma first leg (the 2-1 defeat).

He also was at fault for 3 goals in 3 UCL finals, Lampard’s goal where he slipped in the build up, Eto’o where he was beaten at his front post and you can pick the faults from the Pedro or Messi goals in the third final. Not massive clangers but poor goalkeeping

About time this was done im pretty excited for something new, De gea has been living off past glory for ages he needed replacing like 3 years ago those cat like reflexes was all he had and age gets to us all. Would have been nice if he was afforded a proper send off to befit his status but it is what it is that's just a byproduct of leaving it too late and the team come first.

I acknowledge that football has moved on from DDG. I acknowledge he has weaknesses as a truly top tier GK. I also acknowledge the need to upgrade if we’re to progress.

However, (a) if half of the story of what happened is true then the club are a disgrace for doing that to a 12yr servant for the club and (b) some people have such short term memories and need to put some respect on De Tea’s name for what he’s done at the club.

Between 2012 & 2018/19 he stopped up from drifting away even further than we did and deserves our respect for that. The issue with his move to Real Madrid was shit but he came back and gave great service to the club.

And we have would-be FM legends describing him as a bottom-tier goalkeeper, do me a favour!

This has nothing to do with him in the past nor how we treated his exit (dubious at best).

But he was a bottom tier keeper LAST YEAR. Which is all I was speaking of in relation to the very lowbar that is set.

Starting to feel like Kim 2.0

Hijack incoming

This is insane baseless paranoia. 10/10.

This deal has looked a done dealio for a few days, all the right noises, all the right news coming out, from all the right places. Exciting transfer, even if he's not perfect, it's going to be very interesting to see how he changes our game.

We watched Onana play in the biggest game most players ever get to play, just a couple months ago. I can't help salivate at the sea change he's capable of bringing to our play. Especially knowing where we're coming from, keeper-wise. Bring it on already!

That said, the way the club have allowed De Gea's departure to be such a damp squib is an absolute disgrace. He deserves much better.

He's going to get crucified the moment one of these results in a goal. I hope we are aware of the trade-offs and decided that what he brings in possession is valuable enough for slightly worse goalkeeping ability. No one looks at the boring bits that are done right, everyone wants to talk about the highlight reel saves / blunders.

A good pass under pressure out to a fullback that then moves us up the pitch 20 yds isn't really something that people will value correctly I feel.

He’ll get crucified by the old farts that don’t understand or appreciate the modern game.

The other 90% of fans will forgive a couple of mistakes a year for overall impact he will have on our ability to dominate games. We’ll be able to go head to head with City / Arsenal /Liverpool., where previously we’ve had to cower and been forced play counter attacking.football to stand a chance (due to De Gea).

This would be like going from no DM to Casemiro, no ball playing keeper to Onana. Would be a massive step up in build up, and we're gonna have a few Barthez memories (different kind of scares that we are used to). Would be entertaining regardless

Onana has massive massive balls. It‘s gonna be soo much fun.
Agree and this is what I like the most about him.

People usually underestimate how much important this is for a top keeper. Unlike other positions a mistake from a keeper usually cost his team a goal, sometime a match and even his entire career. Look at Karius for example. So the pressure and the fear is huge and not many could cope with it especially when the stake is high and there's too much heat. The best keepers must have a nerve of steel or better, immune to pressure to be able to pull it at the top level.

That’s absolute certain. Not just him. The whole process of building from the back properly will take time and mistakes to get right.

People are saying there are gonna be howlers…of course there are gonna be howlers! He’s a human being, does Alisson, Ederson, Neuer etc not make howlers? De Gea made distribution howlers on a weekly basis.

Onana absolutely will be a net positive to us next season, and massively so, unlike De Gea.
