Spain NT also used to play tiki taka when Valdes at his peak. But guess who's Spain number 1? And Spain NT was pretty successful playing tiki taka also without Valdes type Gk. They kept dominating games with their midfielders running the show. Not much to do with their Gk.

Casillas was a million times better than DDG with the ball at his feet.

As long as the profile of the player is closer to what we need to bridge the gap, it makes a difference and is a great step forward.

With Maguire already phased out and now an actual ball playing GK on the way I can now say I genuinely feel confident I won't shit myself when we are being pressed.

It's different when other teams bring in much more refined pressing systems like the modern day, it asks more of your deep build up. But also - Spain had Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets with Pique at the back. Of course they will be comfortable no matter what on the ball, but with Casillas they would be more susceptible to the press than with a different goalie (he wasn't bad but just not like ederson/Allison/Onana etc). Playing tiki taka doesn't mean your deep build up is so important. The deep build up through your goalkeeper is the method that is needed to kill an opposition press and how to deal with it effectively (or combine that with hold up play in attack when you go long to give you variety). We have neither right now.

I have just watched the first minute of this and I had to stop as I lost count of the amount of times he had an easy save to make and pushed it straight back to the six yard box....get outta here!
Onana can't block the ball. He is a very average keeper. If you buy him, next year you must buy another keeper. Waste of money.

Almost every save resulted in a tap in if a striker was in position.
That and every cross he came for he actually seemed to punch, the ball never seemed to go outside of the area, yet a lot of them seemed very catchable
Not feeling this one. I think there are better options without spending as much.
That's the thing isn't, DDG is taking a kicking for his kicking, and so it's easy to forget the things he does very well. He almost always punches the ball away to safety.
Look, his passing is not up to scratch for a big team attempting to play modern football, he doesn't dominate his box either, I get that, and he does need to be changed, I suppose I'm saying we shouldn't be surprised if a new keeper arrives and has some glaring weaknesses which we've always taken for granted
Unfortunately, we are backing our managers as we have always done. Mount and Onana are the players ETH wants. Now i am not a fan of this model, as i believe a technical director should also have a say and should guide the squad planning. But we have never done that.
So it looks like most his saves are parried back into the danger area, and he seems terrified to actually catch the ball and instead makes some weak attempted punches.

In some parts of his game, he's very similar to De Gea. In others wildly different. The parrying shots right into danger, and punching instead of catching are two things we're very used to.
Some of those shots he should be holding on to but some are excellent blocks. He doesn't seem to fancy catching except the easiest ones going by this video. I feel the overall package will be better than De Gea though.
Is he better at distribution/playing out from the back than Costa? What’s his shot stopping also like? I know he’ll probably be cheaper than Costa.

Do we watch different DDGs? He doesn’t go near a cross unless there isn’t a striker within 30 yards of him.
Personally, would have preferred Costa, who although will cost more, is younger and I feel a better keeper than Onana.
Some posters it seems have created this alternate version of De Gea in their mind where even weaknesses are somehow projected as Strength .

The idea is the same as Man City. Ederson isn’t a safe pair of hands by any stretch. But because he is so good with his feet, city hold onto the ball better, play out comfortably and dominate games more so give up less clear cut chances.
Onana playing out to Martinez and Varane with shaw and (mystery RB) Casemiro and Eriksen/Mount is light years away from out Last pre ETH game - losing to palace with DeGea playing out to Maguire/Lindelof/Telles/Dalot and McFred.
This would be a great step in the right direction imo. I would take the risk all day long if it means we stop hoofing the ball after 3 passes out from the back.

Going by the video he seems weak in his handling/catching and his saves seem to have a tendency to generally go back in dangerous areas.
