Anderson on his way out?

Let's say we sell Anderson, our midfieldlineup next season (January 2013)

Ryan Giggs - 39 - too old
Paul Scholes - 38 - too old
Michael Carrick - 31 - world class
Darren Fletcher - 29 - mightn't ever play again
Tom Cleverely - 23 - completely unproven.

Yeah, let's sell him.

Words of wisdom. Imo we needs at least one more, probably two, more CMF.

It's not only when you have a "big injury problem" though. A big injury problem is 8 defenders out and using Fletcher and Carrick as CBs.

Having 3 wingers for two positions isn't enough. Pretty much every week last season either Valencia, Young or Nani were injured. One injury and you would then have to reconsider your whole game plan to get a player who should be playing centrally to either start on the wing or on the bench so he can come on as a winger.

FWIW Kagawa isn't a "United" winger. He's wasted tracking back and helping his fullback and when he played wide for Dortmund and Japan its on the left of a 3 in a 4-3-3 and in that system it's the spare player in the middle 3 who offers himself as support to the fullback while Kagawa offers himself centrally.

But its not always going to have to be two positions like that. The move to sign kagawa suggests to me that at times we will move to a 433, it could even become our default formation if fergie is planning on putting kagawa straight in which you imagine he will do. In that case the two wide areas can be fought over by, nani, Valencia, young and welbeck, even Hernandez is capable of it if not suited to it. Add Powell as an attacking midfielder and you could easily see kagawa out there if necessary.

That's the point there are options there. Nani is wasted too by having to track back as is Rooney but that's how we set up. Either way there are plenty of options. If you look at it as 4 attacking spots in the team then you have 7 players fighting over them, not to mention Powell and giggs and any young players who might be brought in.

In the middle we have numbers yes but they all come with some sort of note as to their limitations. Scholes and giggs need protection if they play in the middle, their partner needs to be strong defensively to cover for their weaknesses, only carrick can do this. As a result you can't really partner them with clev or ando against any decent opposition. Clev and ando still have lots to learnf about the defensive side of the game and whilst they are physically able and willing to track back, they don't know that aspect very well and so leave spaces. Again against decent teams you'd imagine the'll need protection more often than not.

That's why a midfielder, for me an alternative to carrick is so much more important that another winger. We have plenty of attacking options and only in potentially Hernandez and Valencia are they slightly limited in where they play in that front 4. In the middle we have only one player reliably around who can do a particular role in the team and all the other players will need someone like him around to play in order to be effective.

One more would be ideal I would say but I'm hoping that Petrucci will step up

Yeah, if Pogba and Morrison can't make that step I'd have to think he's going to have a season on loan before figuring for the first team in any significant way. Thought I'd be happy to see him in the squad a year first, as cover and for the LC, like Welbeck got before he went out on loan.

As Tunnicliffe was on loan last season he seems the more likely addition from the youth team.

Larnell Cole will be on the summer tour reportedly, I remember some article where Ole or another coach said they saw his long term future in midfield, perhaps that's the plan still.

Pogba and Morrison both had the opportunity to step up. Morrison couldn't resolve his off filed problems and Pogba had some decent cameos but for whatever reason wanted to join Juve. History shows that it's not always the most gifted footballer who makes the step up from junior levels. It's about determination and professionalism too. We have some real talents in the reserves. Personally I'd like to see the majority of them (ie the likes of Tunnicliffe, Petrucci, Brady, Powell, Keane and Cole) out on loan unless they can be involved in first team action. It'd be nice to give these guys a run in the league cup rather than having first team players using it to get some match fitness.

The Anderson cycle

Turn up for pre-season fat as feck
Start the season ok, a couple of good games here and there
Everyone says 'this could be it, he's ready to kick-start his United career'
Get's injured, out for 4 months
Comes back, out of shape, plays a couple of games and blows out of his arse after 60 mins, substituted
Get's injured again, season over
I wanted to post "it's funny 'cause it's true", but actually only his last season was a huge disappointment (especially after his best start of the season for United).

Anderson's 145 appearances:
