I didn't see the match, but looking at the line up, it seemed he was a part of a 3 man midfield with Cleverley and Jones playing behind him. Was that the case?

I'm not sure Anderson had enough impact for us to know exactly where he was playing. But somewhere in a midfield 3, yes

His time was up long ago really. He's been given lot longer than he would have done at any other top club, by quite a distance. He should count himself lucky to have been given so many chances, and he must be disappointed that he's never really managed to take them.

I think he's great at bringing the ball from deep in the midfield. He just runs in a straight line and immediately gains 30-40 yards up the pitch, taking a few opposition players out of the game. It's just what comes after those runs. His shots usually balloon into the stands, or he blasts his passes as if he's taking a shot.

He plays like someone playing FIFA who holds down every button. He spams the sprint button and often takes one stride too many and loses the ball. Every through ball usually results in a goal kick or a throw in. Or he holds down shoot until the power bar is full, and it cannons high and wide. He just doesn't seem to know how to reel it in.

To be fair to him he didn't do a great deal wrong last night when he had the ball, generally keeping the play moving and playing it simple. I just felt he was hiding and didn't really want the ball, jogging around the pitch & not moving into good positions or making himself available.

He's a likeable fellow, but we don't really need to like him, we need him to perform on the pitch.

I always feel this is the problem, because he seems like a character or "nice" people try and excuse his awful performances. He's just not good enough, never seen him contribute much to a game on a consistent basis for a long time, fair enough he's been injured but I just feel he's not good enough to play at a top level club. He just seems to be an extra body, I'd imagine most premier league central midfielders can do the same as him at a club like Man Utd and most would probably do more.

I'll never forget that West Brom game this season, I think it was one of the worst individual performances I've ever seen from anyone, granted no one was brilliant but he was really poor, was hard to watch.

He's actually become a shadow of his former self. Its quite sad to see really. Just watch some clips of Ando from his first season here, its like watching a different player.

Makes ya wonder, how can somebody go from being pretty decent to being completely shit.

Probably felt like he had made it at United. Lost that extra ounce of determination and put an extra ounce of everything else on.

He needs to go elsewhere, previously I'd have said on loan but it's probably a little late for that, although tbh no reason he can't go on loan at this age. He needs to go somewhere where when fit he'll play regularly because he needs to get confidence back and he needs more game time. For his age he must be really low on matches played. I doubt he can do more now than become a squad player at a good team but it's still something. There are still aspects of his game, his willingness to pick the ball up from deep and then carry it forward, his strength and his range when he's on form that show he has something to offer but I can't see how he will get that playing as irregularly as he does.

Shame how it turned our for him. Was a brilliant talent at 18 and had everything to become one of the top midfielders. Injuries and a lack of drive seem to have resulted in him wasting away his huge potential.

Lad's had such bad luck with injuries. A couple of seasons ago, he was just getting eased back from injury and was looking class for us against Blackburn. He was creating chances left and right in the first 20 mins, and then his knee went and he went off.

He would have been a solid buy, but for the bloody injuries.

Let's be honest, we're Manchester United. Players who can just about garner faint praise like "Well, he wasn't bad last night, he just didn't really do anything" don't really cut it. Get rid and let's pretend he never, ever happened.

I don't buy the 'injuries are the problem' thing, plenty of youngsters have overcome worse than him to become top players. He clearly lacked the drive and motivation to become a top player.

I've defended him quite a lot in the past, but yesterday's performance was very mediocre. It wasn't painful to watch, but nor was it good. The strange thing is that he played better in the second half, as did our entire team, but his passing was off in the first half. He did look thinner and fitter than before, and I wonder how many of our other CMs could have won that 40 yard run against Assaidi, which did prevent a fairly dangerous counter. That's what is so annoying. On paper, he has all the abilities that United need in midfield. I still want him to succeed, but I find that hard to believe. I'd like to see him get game time in the last 20-30 minutes to see if he can find some form. If not, then at least we know we tried. (The argument has been used before, but now that he's fit, he should be given a chance to prove himself one last time)

....six years....bloody six years! I'm not denying he has charm, but that isn't exactly what we need is it. I rather want his fat round face out of Old Trafford as soon as possible...

He had a few injuries to the knee though, didn't he? They're the worse when you're developing, they can really stall your career, it's happened numerous times before.

Having said that, I agree that the injuries weren't the major part (even though they were a factor), he lacked ambition and motivation which is a killer.

Odd thing is, you would not have thought that in his first season here. Dominated a lot of experienced midfielders, full of energy, brought directness from midfield to our attack.. I had high hopes for a midfield of Ronaldo, Hargreaves, Carrick, Anderson, Nani and then Rooney up top....

feck you Anderson!!! You made me look like a tit!!!
Plus, Scholes, Giggs and Tevez. Imagine that...

Indeed.

At some stage some people on here were denying that he was overweight and not fit enough. I find it staggering.

When a player who has been out for a year gets ahead of you then you know you got big problems.

Such a shame. Can't even be motivated by a World Cup in his home country. Before people say he won't get in anyway. Well at least he can actually try and perform to see whether he's got a chance.

Bit rough saying he isn't motivated. I'm sure he would love to (in an ideal world) and in fact, he has said that he would love to be considered, it wuld be a dream to play in the World Cup. Saying he doesn't try just sounds petty.

I have been a big defender of Anderson but if we are able to bring in a midfielder this window, if we do get an offer for Anderson, I'm happy to see him go. Shouldn't sell if we don't add to the squad in January though.

Bit rough?

He should be walking into our midfield with the potential he has. So he is clearly lacking motivation. When Fletcher who has been out for a year overtakes you then you got big problems.

Zaha should then walk into our wide positions with the form of our wide men this season, football doesn't work that way. There are a heap of factors that contribute to both selection and a players performance that we don't have any insight on.

I'm not going to sit here and question his desire, it just hasn't worked out how we wanted, that's life and we are getting close to the time where we move on.

To be fair I don't think he has that potential you talk about anymore. He did have it when he first came, but it's not there anymore.

:D He must have such a nice life at United, thus never has strong desire to move club.

His knees are fecked.

Some players never fully recover from a devastating leg break like Anderson and Hargreaves. Valencia did, but Eduardo and so many others haven't.

With Anderson I've always thought that indeed it was injuries that have kept him from playing regularly. It's not his ability, because we all know he has pace and can dribble well and when he is on his passing is very good too.

But who the feck knows, he could be a complacent footballer who would rather collect wages and act as the mascot.

I don't think he was injured since start of the season, so injuries aren't probably the reason why he isn't playing at the moment.

I love stats. And when I'm bored... Here's Anderson's 6.5 years at United.

When he played 90 minutes in United's two (or more) consecutive games:

August 2011: City 3-2 [6 days] West Brom A 2-1 [8 days] Tottenham H 3-0
November 2010: Blackburn H 7-1 [3 days] West Ham A 0-4
December 2009: West Ham A 4-0 [3 days] Wolfsburg A 3-1
October 2009: CSKA A 1-0 [6 days] Barnsley A 2-0 [4 days] Blackburn H 2-0
January 2008: Birmingham H 1-0 [4 days] Aston Villa A 2-0
November/December 2007: Sporting H 2-1 [6 days] Fulham H 2-0
October 2007: Aston Villa A 4-1 [3 days] Dynamo Kiev A 4-2

Where's this pie eater at? Cleverley surely needs a break and he hasn't exactly been setting the world alight.

A cup game, probably not even injured... simply too shit to play. Anderson.
