Ander Herrera to PSG? | Gone.

Dunno why so many are surprised he's made this decision. This doesn't negate the fact that he's a consummate professional and had an affection for the club. However, he wants to do what's best for his career and finances first, so PSG with chance of more money, easy trophies and guaranteed CL participation was too good to turn down.

He isn't like Rafael who wouldn't have left unless he was shunted out. At the same time, he does like the club and gives 100% on the pitch, even on his bad days. I don't grudge him the move.

I disagree. I can't think of any player except Kante who has Herrera's level of anticipation and can interception like he does.

I can't believe we won't pay him £150k.
I think the wage demands have gone up now PSG have become involved. We should have sorted his contract last season but Jose wasn't keen and the club views a 28 year old player as an OAP so here we are. Utterly braindead decision as usual.

The lack of teary-eyed reminiscences of "that storming Herrera performance", speaks muffled volumes.
While one individual can't be blamed for malaise in a team sport, Herrera has seen his time here be a period of largely incompetent midfield performances. If you remove Pogba from the equation, how many assists have our midfield contributed from open play?
He has been an intrinsic part of a non-functioning, goal shy midfield, in a time when we have been dominated by teams who hadn't beaten us in decades.

As I say, there are many reasons for this, and they don't all land on Herrera, but if he was as critical to us as some are making out, there would be lots examples of legendary performances, thrown about in these lamentations. I remember his assist for Rashford vs Chelsea, and a deflected goal or two, but I'm struggling after that.

Is this a joke I don't get it?

Herrera won our player of the year as a defensive midfielder and has played as one of two defensive midfielders alongside Matic many times this season, including our most recent game.
I said holding midfielder, which is what Matic is playing. Herrera is a pure ball winning DM. Do you really not see a difference between these players characteristics?

I think it’s just a bad situation, because although he isn’t the level of player we should ideally have in midfield as a starter, as things stand, essentially he is one of our most consistent and best players.
There are plenty of players we should have let go before him.
But, he wants 200k and he’s not worth that, so there’s also that.

But he is worth 200k (and so are many others) relatively speaking once you consider what Sanchez was given. This is more collateral damage from that decision. We're acting like a feckin mobile phone company...only new customers get the best deals. Yes yes yes to any incoming player demands....even if they dont really want to come, whilst really neglecting those playing week in week out for the club. Its all part of the larger shit show which has been our poor top tier management decisions.

P.S. The solution, lose Sanchez, inform the media we are getting the wage bill back into some form of normality.....lose (make examples) of the players who refuse to accept the new reality. Move forward. Consider it a lesson learn't.

I called Herrera a defensive player and said the other defensive midfielders we have spent a lot of money on recently aren't as good as him. And they aren't. It's completely irrelevant that you choose to call Matic a holding midfielder and Herrera a ball winner. They both play defensive roles and Herrera is much better at it than Matic.

So you dont think he's fully established himself in midfield despite being 1 of only 2 players to win player of the year since Sir Alex left? (1x Ander, 4x De Gea) and this season being our 2nd best midfielder?

What does it take to establish yourself in midfield then? Cuz I guess Pogba hasnt done it yet either
Player of the year voted by the fans, and random fans have always known to be great player performance analysts. Just look at this forum as an example, how contradictory opinions on players tend to be. How do you explain the poty who obviously should be your best player immediately getting dropped after getting Matic? He was alao barely part of the best season we've had since SAF.

Pogba has been one of the first names on the team sheet since day one, which is in stark contrast to Herrera.

Yeah, this does seem like a solution but also a way to shoot yourself in the foot as if we lose De Gea / Mata / Herrera all on frees then it would cost us £Xm just to replace them, on top of where we already need to invest.

Sanchez does need to leave though.

In the DDG thread there's a rough guide as to what other keepers earn and I 100% agree there's no way we should be paying DDG £300k+ p/w no matter what. Let PSG have him and feck up their wage structure instead

Because Mourinho went straight for spending on size. Mourinho also dropped Pogba for his last games, so I guess he hasnt established himself since he knows more than the fans apparently

I call them that because that's what they are and there is quite a difference between the strengths needed to play their respective positions. Herrera can't shield the ball/hold on to the ball, his passing range is limited, his positional awareness is not good enough. He doesn't have the discipline needed to sit in front of the defence, which is what Matic does. Go look up what the strengths of a holding midfielder vs a pure ball winning one is. I already had this disscussion with someone else in this thread, I'm not about to do it again.

He absolutely can, but he needs to do it in a 2. Matic has played that role as a 1 in a 3 man midfield, and as a duo at times. Ander hasnt played it alone

Not on the bench and highly doubt he's injured. He's gone I think, should be still apart of the squad. Ramsey has given his all and he knows he's gone.

So you think size is the only reason Herrera got dropped, despite supposedly being poty? He dropped Pogba because of a dispute, not because he didn't rate him.

What do you mean knows more than the fans? Like I said the fans opinions are all over the place, they're not one person.

I think Ander wants to stay at United, that him and his family are settled here. PSG have thrown a real spanner in the works, mischievously I think. If I were Ander I would tell my agent to ignore it, because at PSG he would barely play, and then they would ship him off elsewhere as they would have achieved what they intended. Which is turn some fans against a popular players.
They definitely have. They don't care about Ander one way or the other. £200,00 per week is nothing to them. Also strange how they tend to pick up players from teams that have beaten them in the CL:D

However, Ander's a big boy, if he's attracted by their offer, there is nothing we can do.

I like Martial a lot, but that is an insane wage....Sanchez really fecked things up royally. Not only was he a poor acquisition on his own without even looking at wages, but he's also cost the club untold sums of money more in wages that other players will negotiate for using him as a reference.
You really believe Sky? I doubt their reporting unless we see some receipts from credible sources (I don't consider Sky one). I bet there are some performance related clauses in his contract as well.

Dont understand why people are so bothered if he leaves. At PSG he will not get first team football. Ole has pretty much paved the way for him to hold down a regular spot, something he has not really had for his whole United career. He clearly is after the money and i would rather buy someone else than fork out 200k for him on a 5 year deal. He probably has 3 years left. The only people worth of 200k plus are pogba, martial (still questionable), rashford (maybe age squeezes him down), de gea (should be number one in my view) and thats it. We have no other huge game changers.

PSG are crying for 1-2 midfielders for 2 years now (since Mota retired). They want renew Neymar and Mbappé (give him Neymar's wages), they're borderline with the FFP so sign a good player on free makes sense for them.
Again, I really like him and prefered him to stay but if we give hime 200k/week we'll overpay and other players will come knocking on the door. Our wage structure actually giving the quality of our players is shocking. We don't compete for major trophies anymore so we have to overpay to attract/keep players.
Herrera wanted a last big contract if PSG gives it to him, let be it.

This is complete nonsense though. For example claiming that Herrera can't shield/hold on to the ball is factually a joke of a claim. His rate of being dispossessed is very low at just 0.4 per game, Matic is more than 3x worse at 1.4 times per game. It's a clear plus for Herrera and a minus for Matic that the latter gets tackled so often in dangerous positions outside our box due to being slow and cumbersome on the ball and yet you are pretending it's the opposite. Your claims about his passing, positioning and discipline are similarly disingenuous. He would never have won our POTY as a defensive midfielder if he was as bad as you are claiming and no manager, certainly not a defensive one like Mourinho, would have even used him in that position or entrusted him to do man marking jobs on key opposition players like Herrera has done on multiple occasions for us.

If you don't want to have a discussion then fine, don't have a discussion. But don't start one, post easily disproven nonsense like Herrera not being able to shield the ball (again, makes your whole argument look ridiculous) and not expect to get called out on it.

Yes, mainly an opportunistic acquisition.

He ain’t all that, a good squad player yes but he’s far from irreplaceable. He’ll soon be forgoton about next season when we improve on the field and off it.

He didnt rate him in terms of getting a performance that keeps him in his job. He dropped him after poor play

And yes, size. The same reason Fellaini was being played and McTominay got more chances than other young cms

This might be me being a sour baby, even though I'm not too fussed he's off due to his outrageous demands, but I'd probably just not bother playing him again, unless we get desperate.

Ramsey is of to Juventus but still playing normally.

He's a player who's had good moments amongst seasons of forgettable mediocrity. Would prefer we kept our 'leaders' as we have few of them but in terms of quality and consistency, nah I'm genuinely not bothered if he leaves.

Love how he's become shit since he got linked with a move away. Funny you lot.

Well he was never top quality. Can't have watched him since 2015 and seriously thought that.
I'll agree he isn't consistent but he's put some of the best performances in for us in the last few years in big games. He doesn't shit out and go missing. He was right to want more and we'll miss him. He's a little shit but he's our little shit and about the only player in that squad who knows what it means to play for United.
