Manchester United to quickly increase Herrera offer and go all out to sign midfielder
A claim that Manchester United have made a bid for Athletic Bilbao's Ander Herrera is all over Spain today. It started yesterday when Cope radio, the station which broke Thiago to Bayern Munich, said that David Moyes had made a move for the 24 year old midfielder. The original amount was put at €30m though some other outlets, such as Marca, dispute this and say the amount was €27m. Regardless of what the offer was, everyone appears to be in agreement that it was rejected.
Both Marca and
El Confidencial can see another bid coming in for the player quickly as Manchester United throw everything at this attempt to sign a player who they think can add some creativity to their side. It's claimed that the interest in Hererra dates back to his
performance at Old Trafford against Manchester United in the Europa League. That would suggest some involvement from Sir Alex Ferguson in helping to find targets now we're so late into the transfer window.
Herrera's buyout clause is €36m but Athletic Club Bilbao could be awkward and add IVA to that, if they really wanted to make it impossible to sign the player then they could make him pay the clause personally which would add income tax and double the amount. Manchester United have picked another hard transfer and they need to work carefully on this because any chance of completing a deal rests on keeping the Spanish club onside.
Marca speculate that a bid around the clause may be accepted because the club have some ideas of how to spend the money themselves. However, Herrera himself is unlikely to push for a move, even though he could multiply his earnings, having said several times he's happy and wouldn't force a transfer.
Manchester United appear to have stuck their neck out again on a difficult deal and with it being so late in the transfer window they'll have to work quickly and smartly to have any chance of making this happen. He would be an exciting signing but he's not even a full international yet so the club may be reluctant to go much higher than they already have.
