Ander Herrera is a Manchester United Player!

A new level of speculation.

We're speculating that we're quibbling over the price of a player that no reputable sources are reporting us to have even made any bid for, or have any interest in.

Let's stick the boot into Woodward for not bidding enough for a player he hasnt actually bid for at all. Probably.

Madness.

Ok fair play, I should have put a disclaimer that if this is true etc. but it doesn't detract from our Eddie being a miser when it comes to buying players. Oh wait, we haven't bought players...

But I'm sure we will get one player at least before Monday

Manchester United to quickly increase Herrera offer and go all out to sign midfielder

A claim that Manchester United have made a bid for Athletic Bilbao's Ander Herrera is all over Spain today. It started yesterday when Cope radio, the station which broke Thiago to Bayern Munich, said that David Moyes had made a move for the 24 year old midfielder. The original amount was put at €30m though some other outlets, such as Marca, dispute this and say the amount was €27m. Regardless of what the offer was, everyone appears to be in agreement that it was rejected.
Both Marca and El Confidencial can see another bid coming in for the player quickly as Manchester United throw everything at this attempt to sign a player who they think can add some creativity to their side. It's claimed that the interest in Hererra dates back to his performance at Old Trafford against Manchester United in the Europa League. That would suggest some involvement from Sir Alex Ferguson in helping to find targets now we're so late into the transfer window.
Herrera's buyout clause is €36m but Athletic Club Bilbao could be awkward and add IVA to that, if they really wanted to make it impossible to sign the player then they could make him pay the clause personally which would add income tax and double the amount. Manchester United have picked another hard transfer and they need to work carefully on this because any chance of completing a deal rests on keeping the Spanish club onside.
Marca speculate that a bid around the clause may be accepted because the club have some ideas of how to spend the money themselves. However, Herrera himself is unlikely to push for a move, even though he could multiply his earnings, having said several times he's happy and wouldn't force a transfer.
Manchester United appear to have stuck their neck out again on a difficult deal and with it being so late in the transfer window they'll have to work quickly and smartly to have any chance of making this happen. He would be an exciting signing but he's not even a full international yet so the club may be reluctant to go much higher than they already have.

Herrera could certainly help us add depth that we desperately need in our midfield.

Energy, skill and a great eye for a pass.

Whether he or Cleverley will be first choice right now is debatable, but he would add much needed competition.

It would also allow us to play a 3 man midfield more successfully.

psych brings up an important point, difficult to conclude whether the player would even want a move which won't make a transfer (Or the fee) any easier. Been a strange summer looking/bidding for a midfielder must say

He's far more talented than Cleverley.

He'd be a great buy but it's far too late in the window now and there is no way the club will pay his release clause.

Athletic fans think this was just dreamt up by the Madrid media to unsettle the team before they play Real.

Lets hope Woody decides to conduct the negotiations over the phone rather than catching a flight over to Spain..

It seems to be a clash between two realities. One including clubs like United and Arsenal where they firmly believe in their own valuations, in contrast to the other reality with clubs who believe their players are worth 10m+ more based on the movements in the market.

Even if we decide to pay those extra 6 million, Athletic could still complicate things for us like they did with Martinez and Bayern.

He'd be a great buy I reckon. I don't particularly give a feck if he'd cost €36m, it's still less than Real paid for Illarramendi and I rate Herrera higher than him.

At this stage we really can't afford for squabble over fees.

They might not actually. It is seller's market so they can get away asking 10m+ on top of valuation.

He could be one of those players we're all fairly unsure about but then explodes into life at his new club, much like Torres from Athletico to Liverpool who had a pretty average scoring record at his first club.

What's there to be unsure about? He's class.

Not sure why people in here are also downplaying him because he can't get into the Spanish team, it's not like many can.

I don't understand why we bid 30m, when his clause was 36m. All we needed to do was meet the clause , and go from there.
Hopefully we just get the job done and sign someone before the end.

£30+ million. Low goal and assist count. it would be a risky transfer.

Sure, but it's possible they don't want to complicate things and see this as great money for the player. I've barely seen this guy but he was fantastic against us and if we want him enough to bid 30 million, 6 million shouldn't stand in our way. No way athletico would accept 30 when the release clause is 36.

We should throw Anderson in the deal....that should clinch it.

It shouldn't, I agree. Just saying it's not as simple as bid 36M and the player is ours.

He had an underwhelming season last year that's for sure. Not sure what to make of this one, if it was 2011 i'd be thinking this was a decent deal. But he's regressed in the past season, perhaps he just needs a fresh challenge, it's a pretty big gamble mind.

Yeah, it seems that entire Athletic team had a dip last season though. Muniain isn't even mentioned anymore.

Unless discussions have been going on in the background for weeks, there simply isn't the time to get this transfer through before the window closes.

Bilbao are a club who held on to Llorente for a year, didn't even play him much and lost him for free this summer when they could have easily landed 20m or so for him last year. No point fecking around too much with them this late in window. If we are sure of Herrera being a good fit for our midfield, then pay those extra 6m and get it done with. If Bilbao are not co-operating and trying to still make it complicated, leave it soon enough to go after plan B or C, D,E,F....

The only issue I see with Herrera is that he's had a poor season and no one is quite sure why. Athletic were in turmoil so that was bound to have an effect, but he's 24 now so it's not as if he was a kid who couldn't be expected to rise above it, or even help lead them out of it.

The 36m Euros would be a fair price if he fulfills the promise he's shown, but yes, I do think there's a gamble involved. That said, he's a big lad, I don't think he'd have much trouble adapting to the PL and he's got a skill set that we need.

Rather get players we need and have scouted for a long time. There's really no point in buying and then be stuck with a player we can't sell or take off the wage bill.
