No idea how someone can say he's crap at positioning and defending. He was our DM in 16/17 and we had the 2nd best defensive record in the league in large part due to him cleaning things up at the back.

If anything Herrera's forward play is lacking, he loves himself a hard hit pass in the channel which makes him a bit predictable, also likes to pass back a lot (but that might be instruction).

He's transformed back to his 16/17 self. And that was one hell of player. If he can keep this energy he got going it'll be invaluable to us.

I said it before, we need to extend him. Can't let him go while there's no one better already in the team.

He has been criminally underused at United. Excellent player who should be our captain

His game is costing him so much energy. At his current level he deserves a new contract at Utd of course, but I doubt he can hold this level of running around and pressing like a mad man for another 3-4 years.

Similar to Running backs in the NFL, your chasers and ball winners in midfield need to be at their physical prime to be the most effective and they need to be replaced when they are over the hill. Both Juventus and Bayern shipped Vidal out when they realized his playing style has taken his toll on his body and they had the chance to get him off the wage bill.

Real Madrid has replaced a 32 years old Alonso with Casemiro and that move has payed off big time. I am pretty sure Ngolo Kante will not be a world class player when he is 33/34/35.

There are only a select few midfielders with the skill set to be still great when their physical qualities are below par (Pirlo, Carrick etc.).
Pirlo and Carrick were never runners, though. Neither was Alonso. I could be wrong about Vidal but I think he had some injury issues? Regardless, there are plenty of high energy players that still maintained their level well into their thirties. I would bet on Herrera having a few good years ahead of him playing at that level. I think Herrera would still be decent even if his energy levels dropped, though his role would have to change. His positioning and tackling are good, passing is decent and he's an intelligent and motivated player

Impressive performance, carrying the slow Matic and Pogba. His stamina is on Park level. Maybe we should call him three-lung Herrera.

Are we going to ignore how he gives away stupid free kicks just outside the box time and time again ?

His work rate is top quality. He does so much of the donkey work allowing Pogba have more freedom.

Good today as he usually is against better sides.

Great performance from him today. Was disciplined and also helped link up our attacks.

Amazing today, you can see how much he loves playing for United and how much he wants to win every game.

Your user name makes sense for you because you are seeing things that arent there

Ander is perfect for a 3 man midfield. He was immense today and gets what it means to play for United.
He is real captain material

Big man Andre is our big game player constantly against the top 6.. shocking..? No, Standard! Big game performance. 10/10 A clear candidate for motm apart from super Dave.

I really hope during his renewal (whether it goes smoothly or not) he realises how much us fans love him. He might have play a massive chunk of his career as a sub to terrible managers but he's honestly one of our best players.

Loves the club, leave everything on the pitch and loved by the fans.

My man Andre

Well he has had some time off under previous managers to be fair.

Why did he get booked today?
To be fair we were defending a counter attack and the ball was there to be won. It was a good tackle in my opinion..

He still has a few years left in his tank, so a contract extension and then he can move on at the end of it in his early thirties

And I think with his Bilbao connection, we already have his next club lined up. They will basically take him whenever we’re ready to give him back.

Isolating De Gea, Ander was by far our best player. These big occasions just don't seem to faze him. I was really proud of his performance.
Hopefully Matic can get himself up to speed in this regard.

His ability on the ball is very very underrated on the caf I feel
He was ruined a bit by LVG and his 'safety first' approach who even publicly called out Herrera and his risk taking ability of playing killer through passes in his first season which wouldn't suit the 'philosophy'. Particularly after that Leicester game which we lost 5-3. The Bilbao version of Herrera was quite a good player in the opposition half which he is showing again.

Spot on.

True, but I do recall countless of moments when he did have the chance to pass forward, but didn't. Maybe can chalk it up to managers' instructions not to take any unnecessary risks? If to take into consideration what Rooney said about Mou's approach to the games and how some players were instructed to play (although we all knew it to some extent anyway).

Every player passes the ball backwards at times when its possible to try and play it forward. You need to mix it up otherwise its predictable and easy to intercept. The more the opposition thinks you're going to play the ball sideways or backwards, the easier it is to take advantage of surprise when you play the ball forward and get your attacker into a great position. If you're trying that all the time the defenders will be looking for it all the time.

Ander was linking up well especially with Lingard who would come back deeper to help us keep the ball with little 1 - 2s and 2 touch passing. And yes sometimes it was sideways and sometimes it was backwards, but we kept the ball and were able to deny Spurs what they wanted to do with their pressing and once we had avoided that we were able to continue the move forward where there was space.

Ander was the only one to play a throughball (statistically at least, Pogba's to Rashford was on the cusp of it as well), he played 2 key passes which is more than anyone in the team other than Pogba as well as playing the most passes of our midfield and having the highest % of passes finding their target. Some were sideways, some were backwards and some penetrated the opponent's defenses for us to get shots on goal.

No central midfielder is going to be playing 45 passes forward. And no Ander didnt do that either

He's our Fernandinho. Full of energy, talented, loves the club and a leader. What else you need from your captain?
Hope he signs an extension soon and I'm full confident he'll.

Lovely little Spanish. You can't hate the man.

Been in solid form since Ole took over. His best position is obviously b2b behind AM to cover those available spaces between attack and defense lines and somehow both Mourinho and LvG misused him for 3-4 years. Unbelievable

You mean when eriksson was going to take a touch a shoot after a rebound from a de gea save?

Ander has a brilliant first touch under pressure as well as great agility/nimble feet and in a heated midfield battle that can make a huge difference.

Winks for me was tremendous for Spurs and whilst Herrera wasn’t as good as him yesterday he was useful for us in terms of winning the ball and then when faced with the press - he was able to twist and turn and find men under pressure.

He gives Matic and Pogba a form of security which allows the two of them to control their areas of the pitch.

Honestly think he’s the type of kid who would thrive under Klopp and Pep and we are only now starting to show signs of how to utilise him properly and he’s looking a fundamental player to us IMO. We have wasted him for so long.
