Was Herreras best position as a deep lying midfielder during his time at Bilbao?

No, Ander Iturraspe or Javi Martinez (when not a centre back) played at #6 when Herrera was at Bilbao.

Ander was mostly the right centre midfielder of a three for Bielsa, then a #10 when Bielsa left.

I think he mentioned being tried at #6 in that interview he gave comparing Bielsa to Van Gaal. His breakthrough came at #8 though.

Much like Xabi Alonso, who at Liverpool was the playmaker to Mascherano's destroyer, under Mourinho Ander is developing his game.

Great performance, but the test will be whether he can keep up this intensity. If so, he could rival some of the best box-to-box midfielders in the world. Big 'if', mind you.

Me back in May:
Agree with others, big fan but he has been total shite recently, which is saddening.

The obvious thing to say is EVERYONE in the team will improve massively under a more pro-active manager but for me, Herrera is the type of player that would be putting in world class performances under Mourinho, Poch, Simone and Pep. For me his skillset is too good not to utilise and build around/let him get consistent.

Bob Loblaw:
He's just not at that level, and it's a sad state of affairs if you build around a player as average as Ander Herrera is. He should be a squad player, if he's happy enough with that, nothing more.

Shark
Caf delusion in regards to Herrera in a nutshell.

and my reply:
His performances this season warrant an average tag but my opinion is that he's a very well rounded player playing in a dsyfunctional team with dinosaur regressive tactics.

A midfield is built through good combinations and tactics. You can't just go out and buy Pogba/Verrait/Gundogan, put him in the team and expect him to run the midfield. Xavi didn't run Barca's midfield on his own, neither did Pirlo, Scholes, Zidane etc. Kante can only perform as good as his partner Drinkwater and their tactics allow that (sit deep, concede possession and break up plays before the first move into the centre of the pitch) etc etc). We rely on a Carrick, who is only happy to sit at the base of his midfield when we don't have the ball (so basically in a 3 man midfield, you have one less person to press and get into pro-active tactical shape), Rooney, who doesn't have the ability on the ball to receive in those pockets of space and is only intent on...sitting back and spraying balls (like Carrick, but at least Carrick can do it better) and then we rotate everyone else to accomendate those two.

A manager like Poch would be getting Herrera and Schneiderlin to be doing all the dogs work in the middle of the park to let players like Rashford and Martial thrive. Except LVG is telling his players to spread the ball wide hoping we'll break teams down not taking chances and having belief in your players in the centre of the park with more deft touchses and inter plays.

Obviously exagerrated about the world class stuff and it's waaaay too early to say because he would do very very well to maintain these performances but the fundamental stuff is right, his skillset is perfect for the modern day footballing team.

It's not a revelation or 'omgz he's turned it around' type stuff, it's just a manager with the right tactics and belief.

Was absolute beast today. Completely proved his worth to anyone who had any sort of lingering doubt

I honestly cannot understand anyone who doubts Harrera. He plays with more heart than almost anyone in the team; he has shown his talent in Spain and in England. He loves the club probably more than he loves his girlfriend (remember how crazy he went after BFS late winner at Watford last season). I love this guy.

To be fair though, even under LvG, when played in big games, Herrera almost always excelled and looked the best midfielder on the pitch. Think back to that run in March/April of 2015, when he basically ran the show for us against Spurs, Liverpool, City and Chelsea in successive games. Can't remember him disappointing in a big game unless he had an injury or something. Van Gaal used him wrong mostly, but he still showed the same type of bite, energy and quality on the ball. It's just... Van Gaal wanted him to pass it back always or whatever.

That was a monster of a performance last night, he was everywhere. Although last night wasn't such a game the one thing he offers you too is probably more goals than any other midfielder we've got. He's one of those players though that's looks great, a phenomenal player, when he's on song but looks awful on a bad day. Instead of the 9/10 performance followed by a 5/10 he needs more 7/10's and 8/10's week in week out.

Brilliant game. Dealt with coutinho very well. I loved that one moment where he chased coutinho, tackled him from behind got the ball and passed it forward. Amazing stuff.

More of this and less of last year please:drool:

Scousers have been having a jizzfest over 'Hendo' these last few weeks - the quality between him and Hererra was night and day last night - if Ander gets a regular run, and I think hes starting to show he warrants it - then expect him to push on and really become a no brainer for selection. His attitude demonstrates he 'gets' what playing in that shirt is about.

One of the best defensive performances i've seen from a United midfielder and should have cemented his place in the team from now on, Jose must have absolutely loved that.

Still, i think Jose has yet to find his preferred first XI and tactic. I honestly think we should drop that 4231 and go for 433 with Herrera as the RCM and Mata on RW. Those two seem to have a telepathic understanding and some of our best stuff under Van Gaal came from the right when w set up like that

One aspect of Ander Herrera's personality which is underrated is his desire to understand. What I mean is this desire plays into why he's able to connect with the fans on a level other footballers wont. He's a guy who comes across as knowledgeable of what fans care about and is a genuine fan of football himself. It's like he's never lost that side of him which is a football fan first and it comes out in his interviews about the game, about fans and about clubs.

It's cool seeing him ply his trade for us. Just remember: Ander Herrera is life

I'll tell you who would love themselves some Herrera, Klopp and Guardiola.

If only we could have gotten Kante as well, imagine him and Kante in a midfield trio, fecking buzzards all around.

I actually think Fellaini compliments this midfield quite well. There's mobility with Pogba and Herrera so he can pick his spots and get forward as well.

He maybe needs to cement himself through this year, but I honestly think he should be our next captain.

Get's the club, has the fight and passion you want to see and has a good articulate brain too. Always says the right things.

Really pleased he played so well last night. He didn't do any of his dodgy 1 touch passes or even turn backwards which was unusual!

These are the type of games Ander loves. Relentless pace, high octane. He wants the opposition to close down and press high so he can use his close control and technical ability to just knock it by them with one touch and a drop of the shoulder.

What a season he is having. 2 of the best games I've seen from him so far in a United shirt - Liverpool and his 2nd half vs City. Love him

Have to say I didn't know he had these sort of disciplined performances in him. I have been calling for Carrick this season but there's no chance of him budging Herrera out of that sitting role.

Thinking about it this was the sort of performance I have been expecting from Schneiderlin when he joined. Very dominant.

This. Plus he is good friends with De Gea - more chance of keeping him with you too :)

Good to see people finally recognising his qualities and to see a manager who trusts and believes in him.

Yeah just watched his interview on MUTV and he certainly has the mentality of a good captain. If he continues to impress he might just get it next season, far more charismatic than the erm man

Bob Loblaw is an idiot.

He is very consistent. Hes delivered whenever he's had a good uni of games in the team.

Over that six game win streak to secure top 4 under van gaal he was the most consistent player alongside Smalling and De Gea. Fellaini, Blind and Mata who got more plaudits for that run, then fell apart to various degrees against Chelsea, Everton and Arsenal. But Herrera still managed to deliver

If he takes his chances, i have no doubt that he will stay here for a long time and we will have another Evra at this club as he really seems to love this club.

There were a few times when LvG played him as a more defensive midfielder and he did well for the most part, but again, he was constantly in and out of the team. Same with the previous season. Our best run of games was with him in the team (that good run against Liverpool/Tottenham/City) and yet he still didn't have the full faith of the manager. Hopefully Mourinho will put more trust in him, because so far this season he should be the first midfielder on the team sheet.

Agree, he has to start. Though in that run you are referring to, Carrick was the holder with Fellaini and Herrera more advanced. And all 3 were superb. I know Herrera then held at Chelsea as Carrick was injured and he did a decent job but nothing close to his performance last night.
