Was Herreras best position as a deep lying midfielder during his time at Bilbao?

Agree with others, big fan but he has been total shite recently, which is saddening.
The obvious thing to say is EVERYONE in the team will improve massively under a more pro-active manager but for me, Herrera is the type of player that would be putting in world class performances under Mourinho, Poch, Simone and Pep. For me his skillset is too good not to utilise and build around/let him get consistent.
He's just not at that level, and it's a sad state of affairs if you build around a player as average as Ander Herrera is. He should be a squad player, if he's happy enough with that, nothing more.
Caf delusion in regards to Herrera in a nutshell.
His performances this season warrant an average tag but my opinion is that he's a very well rounded player playing in a dsyfunctional team with dinosaur regressive tactics.
A midfield is built through good combinations and tactics. You can't just go out and buy Pogba/Verrait/Gundogan, put him in the team and expect him to run the midfield. Xavi didn't run Barca's midfield on his own, neither did Pirlo, Scholes, Zidane etc. Kante can only perform as good as his partner Drinkwater and their tactics allow that (sit deep, concede possession and break up plays before the first move into the centre of the pitch) etc etc). We rely on a Carrick, who is only happy to sit at the base of his midfield when we don't have the ball (so basically in a 3 man midfield, you have one less person to press and get into pro-active tactical shape), Rooney, who doesn't have the ability on the ball to receive in those pockets of space and is only intent on...sitting back and spraying balls (like Carrick, but at least Carrick can do it better) and then we rotate everyone else to accomendate those two.
A manager like Poch would be getting Herrera and Schneiderlin to be doing all the dogs work in the middle of the park to let players like Rashford and Martial thrive. Except LVG is telling his players to spread the ball wide hoping we'll break teams down not taking chances and having belief in your players in the centre of the park with more deft touchses and inter plays.
To be fair though, even under LvG, when played in big games, Herrera almost always excelled and looked the best midfielder on the pitch. Think back to that run in March/April of 2015, when he basically ran the show for us against Spurs, Liverpool, City and Chelsea in successive games. Can't remember him disappointing in a big game unless he had an injury or something. Van Gaal used him wrong mostly, but he still showed the same type of bite, energy and quality on the ball. It's just... Van Gaal wanted him to pass it back always or whatever.Great performance, but the test will be whether he can keep up this intensity. If so, he could rival some of the best box-to-box midfielders in the world. Big 'if', mind you.
This. Plus he is good friends with De Gea - more chance of keeping him with you tooHe maybe needs to cement himself through this year, but I honestly think he should be our next captain.
Get's the club, has the fight and passion you want to see and has a good articulate brain too. Always says the right things.
Really pleased he played so well last night. He didn't do any of his dodgy 1 touch passes or even turn backwards which was unusual!
Good to see people finally recognising his qualities and to see a manager who trusts and believes in him.

Me back in May:
Bob Loblaw:

and my reply:
Obviously exagerrated about the world class stuff and it's waaaay too early to say because he would do very very well to maintain these performances but the fundamental stuff is right, his skillset is perfect for the modern day footballing team.
It's not a revelation or 'omgz he's turned it around' type stuff, it's just a manager with the right tactics and belief.
Fixed. e-RIP, Bob.Bob Loblaw was an idiot.
Have to say I didn't know he had these sort of disciplined performances in him. I have been calling for Carrick this season but there's no chance of him budging Herrera out of that sitting role.
Thinking about it this was the sort of performance I have been expecting from Schneiderlin when he joined. Very dominant.
When did that happen? I could have sworn I saw him post yesterday? Might have been another scouser though...Fixed. e-RIP, Bob.
There were a few times when LvG played him as a more defensive midfielder and he did well for the most part, but again, he was constantly in and out of the team. Same with the previous season. Our best run of games was with him in the team (that good run against Liverpool/Tottenham/City) and yet he still didn't have the full faith of the manager. Hopefully Mourinho will put more trust in him, because so far this season he should be the first midfielder on the team sheet.
Dunno when but I think he is gone. When did that happen? I could have sworn I saw him post yesterday? Might have been another scouser though...
