All I’m saying he’s clearly better than this level today. He should be in North London on the bench.

He probably won't face another defender like their No:5 today who shat himself every time Diallo had the ball. I'd rather our young players earned a chance, over jumping straight onto the hype train and wanting them in instantly. He does look exceptional, but still has a long way to go.

Exactly this. It looks like teams know again how to play with us. We either change something, which I can't see happening at this stage of the season, or we introduce a different variable to our attack. Amad is unpredictable and different to what we have.

Let's spruce it up. I can't see him playing for the U23s again after today.

He's barely played any football the past few months. He needs to get his match fitness up first.

Let's hope he can replicate his current form into the first team. And if he does, I fully believe he will be a big threat on either wing.

He looks very strong to be such a short boy. Impressive highlights. Reminds me of Mané, Messi and Robben.

Liverpool's CB who was considerably bigger than Diallo actually struggled to contain him in one particular passage of play. And if it wasn't for Diallo slipping, then I fully believe the diminutive Ivorian would've embarassed him.

The way that some posters put it, you'd think that he had a Messi-like performance. Now the kid has obvious instance amount of talent but he isn't ready for the first team yet. He still look very raw and his decision making will need more maturity.. Give him time to acclamatize!

Yeah exactly. I took notice of that situation, it looked kinda crazy for those two to be so evenly matched physically.

I would start him in the next league game. If you are good enough you are old enough, our other attackers are hardly pulling up trees, especially on the right.

With no crowd present, there will be a lot less pressure for a youngster like him, and we’ve seen how an injection of energy and trickery can give teams a boost before.

Let’s get him doing Grealish’ calf workout, you don’t need to be big, just strong :)

Cant wait to see him in the PL.

Like I said earlier did Ronaldo and Rooney go earn their stripes by playing in the reserves? Get him on the bench and give him a taste. We are hardly looking at him as some type of saviour. Players skip levels all the time. Even McTominay jumped progression. As usual we are playing everything too safe.

Honestly - what’s the alternative to him on the right?

Just chuck him in. I struggle to see him do worse than Rashford off the right.

The alternative is he’s not ready, plays poorly then gets labelled a flop and is racially abused on social media - his confidence is destroyed and we never see him again?

Ole and the staff need to make sure he’s ready, and they’re doing that.

Did you watch him yesterday? The u23s is far too low a standard to be of any benefit to him.

Yeah I did and I was very impressed, but it’s a big big jump from that level to men’s.

I do think he should be from the bench, his fitness looked fine. I’m just saying sometimes there’s more reasons why a player doesn’t just get chucked in the deep end.

Was expecting all of the obvious stuff - low centre of gravity, blistering pace and a box of tricks. What impressed me most was his passing ability. Shouldnt be too long before he's getting 15 minutes or more for the first team

Agree, he should be included in match day squads and at this stage would be an amazing impact sub. Just ease the kid in, not put all the pressure on him. If he does well, then look to give him starts later in the season, but watch the minutes he gets.

Yep just look at the attention he’s getting just from a reserve match! BBC and ESPN all commenting on him during/after the game, the pressure will be huge for him when he does get his full debut.

On the plus side, he seems to be very self confident and I think he’ll brush it off easily. The way he demanded the penalty and the finish shows he’s got the right mentality.

Exactly. He is already bossing his teammates. Don't think we have a shrinking violet in his case.

He’s not ‘one of our young players’ in the traditional sense though, he’s a new player bought for the first team for big money who happens to be young. ‘Earning a chance’ shouldn’t mean he has to do some sort of apprenticeship in the reserves any more than it did for Cristiano Ronaldo or Dan James. If he’d come up through the ranks then of course, his full debut would come via earning it in the academy. But Diallo earned his chance at United while he wore an Atalanta shirt.

Your mad. Ole doesn't make changes before 80

This is exactly what I said earlier in the month, the way people talk about him needing months to play in the reserves before being put into the squad is crazy, you don't put a £18m pound signing in the reserves, this is just Ole being overly cautious.

If Diallo can't handle the pressure of playing for the first team at 18 then he won't have the required mentality to play here (neither do a lot of our other players to be fair).

Really? I watch the game, his decision making is already better than Rashford. Choosing the right option most of the time. Plus he can shoot with his left foot therefore he is a better option than Rashford. We can let Martial and Rashford rotate on the left. Let Diallo and Greenwood take on the right.

I didn’t say he needed to serve an apprenticeship, not sure where you got that from? I’m sure his 59 minutes of action for Atalanta will have stood him in good stead. Now for him to get his head down and show the boss he deserves a chance to feature.

That would be from you saying our young players should ‘earn a chance rather than jumping on a hype train and wanting them in instantly.’

People keep talking about his limited time with Atalanta as if it is to be used against him. He was 18 with 59 minutes, not 26. Every young player has only 59 minutes at some point. What he needs is more. Especially when he performed very impressively in those 59 minutes. Personally, I think he should be a first team player, and be a part of the rotation and receive initial sub appearances, just as Martial or Ronaldo did as teenage signings. Think those cameos should be used to earn chances.

Totally agree.. bad decision making? He didn't do anything wrong really in that regard. Based on his performance yesterday, he should be on the bench instead of James.

Is he as good as either? Rooney had played 60 odd first team games and scored over 15 goals for Everton prior to joining United? Ronaldo 25 games for Porto. Both were far more proven. I care not if he’s playing in a few weeks time, but throwing a small player into the fray in a struggling United team isn’t the ideal any manager should be looking at. I’d say very confidently that Ole and co have a better grasp on it than any Redcaf poster.

So saying he’d be best served playing a few reserve games, whilst he learns the language and physically builds himself up is saying he needs to do a 3 year apprenticeship. Cool grasp on the English language you have there. As that wasn’t what I said.Oh and Martial and Ronaldo, along with Rooney (just in case you wish to throw him into the mix) were far more proven and physically ready.

Nothing wrong with having a few appearances for the U23s before he starts appearing on the subs bench from Mid Feb.
No mate, he needs to come in NOW! Replace Martial and Rashford, will score a hattrick on debut and be the GOAT we have been searching for

I am confident I have a better grasp on the English language than you, and at no point did I say ‘3 years’ - which you have added for dramatic effect. And if I wished to throw Rooney in the mix, I’d have thrown him in the mix, but I chose teenagers signed from abroad who need to ‘build themselves up physically and learn the language’, as you put it. I will throw Paul Pogba into the mix though, as he moved to Italy as a teenager having not played a full game for United and went straight into the first team at Juventus.

And if learning the language had any relevance whatsoever, Cavani would be in the U23s. Diallo won’t learn English in a couple of reserve games anyway, and it should have no bearing on him playing.

Well said. Spot on!

That's not what people are saying.

The idea is he should be on the bench instead of James and Mata who are just taking a place in the matchday squads when Ole has no intention at all of using them. He should then be gradually introduced to see if he has what it takes to make the right-wing his own.

Rather than be on the bench immediately, at least one more game at U23 level would benefit his match fitness.
If people genuinely think we haven’t enough quality to win our next 2/3 games without Diallo, then we are in a real state.
I think we might see him in the Cup game;it’s only a week away or so

A confusing post.

We have in likelihood paid about 20m€ for him at this point. It’s not that big money.

You’re answering a post saying his chances shouldn’t be based on hype, and you mention Ronaldo? I get you’re also mentioning Dan James, but James were three years older and had played multiple games at adult level. If we should put Diallo through a similar developmental path to those, we would send him on loan (which no one advocates), let a lone have him play a few games with the U23s.

He is already in the first team squad, training with them in their buble, so he obviously is not considered as a U23 player. At Atalanta, he has earned a place in our firat team squad. Wich I guess nobody disputes. Has he, at Atalanta, proven to be a better option right now than Rashford, Mata and Dan James? I think at the present moment, that is definitively disputable. But a bit pointless, as I guess none of us have much of a clue based on his 57 minutes so far.

I for one am interested in seeing him get cameos for the first team soon if he shows on the training outch that he’s ready. This probably makes me a sober sceptic in this thread, whereas some think it’s a clear mistake not to start him ahead of Rashford, Mata and James against Southampton, based on god knows what.

Where are you on this continuum?
