All Time Premier League Fantasy Draft

Mmm, Yep, Lampard is an obvious good pick at this stage but I'm also unsure of how he'll fit with Scholes(unless Scholes is being shoved to RM like in the NT :wenger:), looking forward to see how The Stain uses both.

Don't see an issue with Lampard and Scholes myself. In fact it should work very well. Most prefer the latter deeper playmaking version of Scholes who could dictate games like no one could in the EPL and Lampard for my money, was always the most advanced midfielder in a midfield trio who could provide plenty of goals, good all-round midfield play and industry.

The only drawback being that The Stain will have to play a midfield trio, but he won't be missing on an awful lot as the 4-4-2 does tend to be harder to execute and is generally frowned upon in these drafts, esp when squaring up against a solid midfield trio. An excellent midfield anchor and The Stain would be set.

Couldn't agree more with @Joga Bonito. It is so obvious they'd be crap together in a midfield duo or even using the box-to-box version of Scholes so I doubt he'd do it.

Scholes as a deep lying playmaker with Lampard as a hard working and productive offensively minded central midfielder looks very good together. Assuming that last piece of the puzzle connects to dots of course as it is a fine line to walk.

I'm not saying it can't work, I'm just saying that for me, it's a risk needless to take for The Stain. Plenty of top quality midfielders there who can get the best out of Scholes, and with Lampard there even if you had a Makalele with them, the midfield will work but it will never produce the best of either of them.

I don't think you have to play negative Mourinho tactics to "get the best out of Lampard". If you use a deep lying playmaker, ideally you want two box-to-box players where one is offensive and the other one isn't. Especially in this draft where there are hardly any lazy wingers about, in comparison to the all time drafts where two defensive box to box midfielders in front of the DLP is a good option as you are facing Garrincha, Best, Ronaldo in the opponent team and maybe Pele as well.

Why would you say that?
Because it pretty much forces him to play the older version of Scholes, which is for me already not the best Scholes. Furthermore, I can't think of a single midfielder who will fill the duty between them in a way that will satisfy me. Lampard usually had two harder working midfielders than Scholes and less creative, I'm not saying it necessarily means he can't make the adjustments but it's not ideal - and that's my entire point.

I also thought about grabbing Lampard, quite the catch at the second half of the 2nd round(most forums would have him an obvious 1st round pick imo), but it just didn't feel right with Bergkamp there.

Again, I'm not saying it won't work, I'm just saying that at this point, with Scholes as your #1 pick you want to build your team around him, not to push him in it, and the pool possible I would have chosen differently as this is an unwanted headache, but maybe @The Stain has a plan which will make me look like a complete moron.

Scholes 05-08 > Scholes 99-02
Depends on what you want to get from him, and even if we agree you're right, Lampard isn't an ideal partner for Scholes 05-08.

Again, I'm not saying it won't work, I'm just saying that at this stage picking Lampard with Scholes doesn't makes sense to me because the options for getting the best of Scholes are so much bigger. @The Stain I hope you win it and I'll end being a joke, because this escalated faster than I expected :)

I'd say if he goes 4-3-3 then it might be a bit of an issue but a proper 4-5-1 with two classic wingers and a target man up front with Lampard bombing into the box from midfield and Scholes pinging it left and right - works like a charm.

Midfield powerhouse, the tireless Michael Essien

From about 06-10 probably as good as any centre midfielder i've seen in the Premier League

Scholes 99 is terribly overrated as is the Keane-Scholes MF combo. The truth is that Butt partnered Keane almost as many times as Scholes during our treble season. Scholes was also the midfielder Fergie dropped to accommodate Veron in the beginning. Eventually he moved Scholes to the number 10 role behind Ruud in 2002/03 season which was arguable his best til that date. A season where he played more as an attacking MF rather than a pure CM. Scholes true passing range and vision was highlighted when he moved back as a deep lying playmaker. He still made those runs to the box, but he controlled the whole tempo of the game from the back.

No shortage of that in the Premier League either.

Aye, plenty of those lying around.

Because it pretty much forces him to play the older version of Scholes, which is for me already not the best Scholes.

Imo, the latter version of Scholes is the better player but the earlier B2B version was pretty good too.

Don't quite that think it's vital in getting the best out of Lampard tbh. Lampard wasn't exactly a ball-hogging playmaker, who needed the lion's share of possession to excel and neither did he have any particular defects, which meant that he HAD to be employed alongside 2 harder working midfielders. He was a pretty complete all-round midfielder with plenty of workrate, goalscoring nous and most importantly excellent team ethic. Him being partnered with 2 B2Bs was just the Mourinho's direct 4-3-3 and it doesn't have to be that way to bring the best out of Lampard imo.

Again, I'm not saying it won't work, I'm just saying that at this point, with Scholes as your #1 pick you want to build your team around him, not to push him in it,

I don't see a potential clash of styles between Lampard and Scholes tbh. Scholes will be dictating play from deep and Lampard will be the B2B attacking midfielder who drops deep into midfield without the ball, playing a supporting role on the ball, whilst making those opportunistic incisive darting runs into the box to score the goals, that he is renowned for. Just their usual roles tbf.

All i'll say is that the gentleman above have given a very good indication to what i'm trying to do. I'm not going to play Scholes on the wing or in a 4-4-2

Sol-Campbell-Arsenal.jpg

A physically imposing defender, Campbell had a long career, playing for Spurs and Arsenal. Strong in the tackle, with pace to spare, Campbell was the best defender in England for a period of time, and a member of The Invincibles team.

Arsene Wenger later said he signed Campbell as he found that when playing against him his attackers could not pass him like they could other players and that "it was as if he was indestructible, such a power spread from him"
