Aye - I was about to question the pomp of Pearce (hey, that's a song title: "The Pomp Of Pearce"). Ronaldo is fine, I think - it's his pomp as that sort of player, one could easily argue.

Gerrard's position is another possible question mark. Personally, I'd say his best position would be the right sided free role - or possibly the hole.

With so many going for a conventional 4-4-2, I thought he'd have gone a lot earlier. Probably the second best choice for wide right in a midfield four.

I think Gerrard/Toure would be interchangeable there and in truth would probably benefit from a more dedicated midfield anchor.

We're all aiming for our ideal XIs. Of course VDS at Fulham is a no-brainer in Chester's criteria and Petrescu stands out comfortably as a non-big-club RB.

Precisely! All this fancy modern formation inside forward types getting picked in flat midfield fours and an absolutely classic right midfielder blissfully overlooked. :wenger:

It took a long time (and a lot of injuries) for him to settle for second behind Beckham. Until we got the Treble it was never at all clear, and had he moved to us in 95 I reckon Becks would have wound up as a central midfielder with sicknote starting on the right. He would have needed to stay injury free though... such a shame.

Yups. And based on the rules, you would pick him ahead of Becks anywhere other than Redcafe.

Yeah they did that in 1998 in Hoddle's 3-5-2. It worked quite well to be honest as they were able to swap positions as per the flow of the game. Remembering the Argentina game, I'll never forget Anderton's 120-yard recovery run and tackle after Campbell's header from his corner was disallowed.

In that team you would drop Chelsea Essien and play Makelele behind Gerrard/Toure - no brainer and fits like a glove.

Amazed that a particular CB hasn't been picked yet. Has been excellent for his club(s)....
 
MJJ wanted Friedel .. and we have a disagreement over certain another player so we will have to wait for him for this one. If he does not show up in 2 hours, I will pick anyway
