I now need a defensive midfielder to break down opponent’s attacks, screen my back four and distribute the ball with accuracy - I pick the highly disciplined Didier Deschamps. His tactical and positional intelligence in the enforcer role is very important. Deschamps has a massive match engine too, demonstrating his tenacity and pressing in areas across the midfield, both deep, central and high up the pitch. For the sheer balance he brings, vision and leadership he possesses, Deschamps is a key cog here.

He's just in a bit of a weird spot — a pure winger who won't look too good in a front three, but he also lacks work-rate of someone like Figo or Beckham to play in 4-4-2... I guess. Perfect player for an outside right; but then, considering his talent, you can probably adjust your team to cover for his weaknesses, because the service he provides is outstanding.

Yeah, true enough. Just interesting to see the other guy he's usually twinned with on the block list and him going at the back end of the 10th round, I guess.
I thought it was more to do with his compatability with the systems of the various managers. I don't think many of the managers played with pure wingers in his mould. Certainly from my own perspective Lippi never really used the old-fashioned outside-right/left. The closest was Lombardo (and he matches up well to Matthews) but he generally played a bit-part role under Lippi.
