Any suggestions/criticisms/preferences? Too many obscure names in the back 5? Too reliant on a Hungarian and Ecuadorian up top? Too many leaders in each department?

First one is the best, by a long country mile.

In fact, please promise to field the one you posted earlier if we meet

Doing that flags graphic is a real pain in these last rounds. You lot haven't spared any corner of the globe to pick players from.

Just to confirm, Kubala would be considered from Hungary, right?

Correct, since he played for them and he is from there.

First or third one for me. Although your team is tough for me to gauge as I'm not overly familiar with a few players. But the graphic you posted earlier with Di Stéfano up top on his own didn't look right. I always thought he was best behind a striker?

My favourite thing about your team is Falcão Keane in the middle and your two wide men, Giggsy and Matthews. That would be a joy to watch. Which is why I really don't like the middle formation.

Right lads, if any of you are logging off soon PM your pick. We should be able to get this wrapped up by evening!

I know which one's best, I'm just wondering how people think the average voter will see it. Spencer sounds like a mediocre British forward, if people look into him more they'll see an Ecuadorian forward who played in Uruguay for most of his career. The whole cabeza mágica might not be fully appreciated and the Copa Libertadores has never really been given much attention on here so the prestige of being all-time top scorer might not be seen as all that. Anyone who hasn't "proven themselves in Europe" has to prove themselves in an international tournament or they're unknown quantities.

The 2nd and 3rd get rid of Germano or Spencer in exchange for a more "proven" player in Haan, though I hope Germano's success with Benfica is evidence enough of his class.

I think he's played as an out-and-out forward in every club he's been at actually, but over time he grew into the role of complete footballer. He was certainly a forward in his early days in South America and when he first came to Madrid he played as a forward until Puskas came in. For Spain he played alongside Kubala. It'd be like playing Pelé up top - clearly capable of it and excelled there at various stages, but when you've got a player that can influence so many aspects of the game you might as well just give him free reign to do as he pleases. Plus, although he was prolific in the box - I'm sure he scored from crosses in 2 or 3 consecutive European Cup finals - it'd be a waste of Giggs, Matthews, Brehme and McGrain to play without a proper target man.

Who are you (relatively) unfamiliar with in my team aside from Sárosi and Spencer? Just so I know who to do proper profiles on for the voters.

Yep, to anyone who's still to go, I've finished picking and will be here all day now so feel free to pm me.

Right to finish of my team, another world cup winner and the greatest goalkeeper to ever come out of Argentina, Ubaldo Fillol.

Pffaf
Beckenbauer
Zanetti Costacurta Vidic Krol
Ocwirk Pirri
Didi
Eusebio Kocsis

...

No, it's not, you suddenly feel like you could do with a couple more

Aye it's a tricky one, covering all bases particularly in terms of potential improvements.

Yeah, I have like three names now who are all great footballers but still I have a hard time seeing them break into my team at any point. And then the question is, pick a nation you already have or a new nation who can go straight into the team without rotations.

I think paceme might regret picking Maynor Figueroa and Andrey Voronin as his 1st and 3rd picks.

Finally done with it. Took ages. Tell me if there are mistakes, I'm sure there will be!

I almost went for Cesare Maldini in the end, I'm sure it would've worked like a charm! European Cup winner in his own right and tough as nails so not a weak link for the ones who look into it, while at least a quarter of them will just vote instantaneously and that one name could swing things my way.

I think paceme might regret picking Maynor Figueroa and Andrey Voronin as his 1st and 3rd picks.

First draft for me but I wanted them both badly so I think it was worth it. I'm happy with how my team has turned out even if I go out in the first round, to me it is an excellent group of players who compliment each other rather than a handful of star names in there for the hell of it with other players making up for their lackings.

IMPORTANT: Please read

As stated on the rules, the submission to Brwned for a game should be no longer than the content of one PM. We can't expect him to be copy-pasting several PMs. A PM will allow for 2500 characters, not a lot, but more than enough.

Format:

  • Tactics description/pitch on why you will win
  • A link to your player's profiles
  • First XI Teamsheet (with subs written under it)
The draw will determine which team comes first and which is second. For the second teams (e.g. paceme in Gio v. paceme) the format is reversed so that the teamsheets can be compared side by side.

The link to your player's profiles should point to a single post on this thread which you will edit/maintain over the course of the competition (copy the link given by the post number at the top right). You may as well get started with that.

As and when you make subs, send the new teamsheet to Brwned, who will spoiler the starting one and establish at which scoreline the new teamsheet kicked in. Subs cannot be undone.

What do people think? McNeill or Carvalho in central defense with Passarella?

feckin'ell, it's going to be hard whoever you get, isn't it?

Hoping for jakec, purely because there's a higher probability of him having a brainfart, like putting C.Maldini on his teamsheet or playing Ronaldo Luiz on the wing. Actually, that would still be really bad.

Was gonna joke about you never scoring if you get drawn against me, what with having 2 goalkeepers, but then i cant even play both at the same time

Gio's side looks class there..from Jennings to Nordahl, solid & destructive. Paceme's defensive pairing of Elias Figueroa & Baresi will get him far I reckon, though the midfield looks a tad unbalanced with Socrates & Masopust in there. Maybe someone like Zito in there could have been an option? Brwned's strength through the wings and forward positions looks impressive, though isotope's creativity through Zico, Hagi, Finney with Vieira & Matthäus backing up is a tantalising prospect.

Carvalho seems to be being underrated. Fantastic player i think. Part of the most solid defence in English football for a long time. Terrys half the player without him

Thank feck for some sense, he's a great player and one of the best of the last decade.

He was underrated in England due to partnering Terry who recieved all the plaudits in the media, especially during that record breaking defensive season. In truth Terry wasn't half as good as Carvalho.

 Jake must be livid. You brought this unto yourself picking random players, then when you get a World Cup winner people don't know who he is

All my players are unbelievable, people can laugh all they want, but my team is up there with any.

McNeill could be an easy sell with what he achieved in the game, captaining Celtic to the European Cup and being the first British player to lift it etc. But I think Carvalho was the better player, he oozed class at Chelsea with his positioning and reading of the game.
